I have been a student at this dojo for a few years now, and I love training here. Let me tell you why!\r \r I love karate… I love the tradition. I love the discipline it teaches. I love putting on the gi (or uniform) and stepping out onto the dojo floor and just getting my body in motion without having to feel like a hamster on a wheel in a gym somewhere. I love seeing my friends… my karate family, and knowing that I am safe in their hands while I learn and practice not only traditional karate techniques, but self-defense techniques as well. Adults and Children train in separate classes, which is another thing that I like. In fact, some of the young adults in class who have just gone off to college have been training at this school since they were young children. It was fun to see them transition from the children’s class to the adult class, and grow in their karate.\r \r Here at Okinawan Karate, we are a family. We learn, and grow together and yet, we are each at our own pace and at our own place with our karate, and that’s one of the reasons I love this school. You could not ask for better teachers than Sensei’s Rob and Laura. They believe that all good sensei have sensei, and they train every week with their own sensei. They are committed to their karate, to their students and to “making friends with karate”. If you’ve ever had a desire to train in karate, or you have a child that wants to learn, come check out Okinawan Karate of Clawson… you won’t be disappointed. As for me, I’ll never go anyplace else! more

Suprised with the Work Out 9/20/2009

I wanted to try a different martial arts style, and was suprised at the intense work out at the karate class. \r I used to do karate when I was younger, but I never did the conditioning part. \r This class warmed up before any karate was started and as I am older, I appreciated being able to streach out first! \r I expected to do kicking and punching in a karate class, but these insturctors keep up the pace of kicks and punching and in no time I was sweating. \r The insturctor kept me sweating the entire time with what they called basic technique, so I am interested in trying their class again. more

Good work out for both kids and adults 5/1/2009

I like the fact that the kids have a seprate schedule from the adults, but it would be convient to train with my child instead of having to come after his class is finished. \r BUT, after actually trying a class with my child in the youth program, I now understand why the kids have a program that is tailored towards their level, and the adult program is tailored for adults. Although it would be more convient to come to karate classes at the same time, this karate school made it comfortable for me to decide if I could work the seprate time slots into our schedule. Pros: flexable schedule Cons: kids and adults seprated classes schedule more

Excellent Martial Art Program. Strong Karate Program...Excellent Work OUT... 3/20/2007

I've been looking for a martial arts program that allowed not only my children a program, but offered an adult program as well. Okinawan Karate in Rochester Hills is one of the only martial arts program that offers full martial arts program for adults as well as children. The Instructors have been in the Rochester Hills area for over 10 years and know their style of karate. They are fully accredited from the North American Shorin Ryu Shido Kan association, and this made me feel better. When I was ""checking out' martial art school, I often ran into ""instructors"" that said, "" I'm on my own, Not affiated with any association"". The instructors in Okinawan Karate of Rochester Hills also continue their study with their teacher and travel to Okinawa Japan on a regular basis to continue offering the best possible martial technique. The fact that the instructors in Rochester Hills Karate were not ""on their own"" made me feel that they were part of an big association, and not something that they were making up as they went along. Strong program, good workout... more
