Great place to watch a match 8/24/2011

Have been here a few times to watch my team play. Always a good crowd and always a good time. Also nice selection on tap. Worth a visit on a Saturday morning. more

Upstairs and Downstairs 5/14/2010

Once you get past the strict-but-not-rude doorman, you have a choice between going to the more sports-bar oriented upstairs or the wilder, (especially on Thursdays), downstairs bar. On Thursdays, COUCH SURFING (couchsurfing-DOT-com) hosts its get-togethers. You'll meet plenty of people from parts of the world you never heard of! It's a great mix, and everyone is friendly, including the bartender. The only problem is that the music is a bit to loud to converse over... especially if English isn't your first language. Oh yeah, THERE'S NO FOOD! --Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC drinkers Pros: friendly staff, friendly customers Cons: music too loud, more

Soccer game mecca 3/8/2010

A happening sports bar in East Village that plays soccer games! Hence, there are usually a lot of Europeans and South American Patrons. Came here on one week night before and it was really chill and drinks here are cheap. What is even better is that I saw Daniel Craig here! Came by again with friends on a Saturday night and it was totally different. There was live DJ spinning and it was happening. Drinks remain reasonably priced. I just like the energy here. Other than soccer games, they also play other sports games as well. Pros: Cheap Drinks and fun vibe more

Good bar, horrible bouncer 1/2/2010

Bar is good however the fat bald surly bouncer that works on Saturday nights has an attitude problem. This past Saturday, I walked in w/o anyone asking me for ID, no one was at the door. I was meeting a friend there so I wasn't talking to anybody and was by myself watching TV at the bar in the interim. A few minutes later after I ordered my first drink this fat surly bald man asked me for my id and I was told to step away from the bar and go back near the front door to show him my ID. Kind of weird but here look I'm born in 1975 do what you need to do. My friends show up all is OK, after about an hour we decide to leave, on the way out the bald fat surly bouncer stands between me and the front door preventing me from leaving. I said excuse me,what's the problem, he was preventing me from leaving accusing me of trying to avoid him when I walked in an hour ago, being extremely confrontational and ready for a fight. According to the fat bald surly bouncer I avoided him on the way in the bar so I didn't have to show my ID, which is ridiculous as I am 34 years old and not an NYU student. My common sense took precedent but I still called bullshit on what he was saying, he just got angrier and angrier, he was ready for an altercation. I told him I'm leaving I'm not getting in a fight with a bouncer that can't do his job of watching the door. A bouncer picking a fight with the customers is totally unacceptable. End of story., thank you. Pros: TV's Cons: Bouncer more

my favorite bar in the world! yup! 11/22/2008

Simply the best place in the entire WORLD to watch English football (soccer). Come early to make sure you get in. I've never gone to this bar past 5pm but I've easily gone 50 times as early as 8am! Crowds chanting for their favorite teams as they have their eye openers. This is what football is all about. The beer selection is good but that's not why you go there. The bartender is a great guy and will comp you a beer here and there if you become a regular. forget finding a seat, you stand and cheer for your team. The guy at the door might be a bit grumpy but i guess he knows that getting in is worth it. If you're not an english football fan there's no point in going, but if you are it's heaven! It's the place 'where football is religion'! Pros: football. atmosphere. atmosphere. atmosphere. Cons: no seats... ever... (which is somewhat of a pro) more

Great drinks. Great bartender. 11/14/2008

I've been to this place about 5 times. At random mostly. Every single time it has been pleasant. I've read all these reviews about watching games but its a fantastic place to go just to talk and get wasted. I've gone on Thursdays and & fridays mostly. It's always been a good time. They make a slammin' Amaretto Sour and their drinks are pretty strong. I'm pretty sure during game night it must be chaotic so if you don't want to get caught up in all that mess, just check beforehand. I plan to have my birthday get together in December at Pros: Strong drink, Great bartender, woman-friendly, great place to BS on weekday nights Cons: None really except the insanity on game night but that's expected! more

If Jesus was a soccer fan, this is where his second coming would be. 3/6/2007

Not that its what the crowds are looking for on game-day. What lures them in is the soccer-conducive atmosphere and by soccer-conducive I mean rambunctious soccer ""force this sport down your throat with this beer"" atmosphere. Impossible not to have a good time, (unless your team loses, in which case thats why theres alcohol). This bar has a ""director of football"" in charge of having as many games on TV as is technologically feasible. Go to Soccertv's website right now, take a look and compare it with the schedule at Nevada smith's website.... Pros: Friendly, patient staff. hilarious random guy always wearing a blazer. Bring your own food. Cons: On big matchdays, barcelona-madrid, manchester -arsenal etc. can get caustrophobically crowded . more

The Perfect Bar 12/8/2006

MOST OVERRATED SOCCER BAR IN AMERICA. BY FAR. 6/21/2006

You can barely see the big screen the picture is so dark and grainy, the other screens are either too small or too spread out, and the service for beer is too slow. The ONLY thing going for it is that it's dedicated to soccer, and even then I've been nights when there's an NBA playoff getting precedence. Pros: Guaranteed European matches. Cons: Dark, poor service, poor quality big screen more

No place like it! 6/8/2006

Ive traveled the US as well as the rest of the world and if your looking for a friendly pub that recreates the feeling of an english football bar then your here. There are many locals that visit this pub but they have always remain friendly-word on the street is no scousers allowed. Take your time, bring in some fish and chips from the next door resturant and soak in the atmosphere. Jack the bartender is a cutie and as sweet as he can be. more

still great for watching football, but... 3/5/2006

I've been a semi-regular at Nevada Smiths, since 1997. Its selection of live football is unrivalled in the city. And the variety of games show ensure a quite international crowd - on a rainy and cold Sunday, it really feels like you're somewhere in Europe. OTOH, with its increasing popularity, its becoming too crowded for a laid back afternoon - don't even think about showing up 15 minutes before kick-off in a Barcelona - Real Madrid game. Also, staff have recently become more demanding on purchases - seems like a purchase of 1 beer is no longer enough to be able to sit through a game - a friend told me he was asked to buy another, even after two drinks! Pros: lots of live football, friendly atmosphere Cons: can get too crowded more

BEST EVER 3/4/2006

this place is amazing. i typically go at least once a week, many times two or three. the football is fantastic, the atmosphere is even better. if you like being in a room full of hard core footy fans and a fantastic array of beer, whilst surrounded by a variety of different matches, this is for you. Jack is the greatest bartender ever, truly a legend. Pros: football, beer, Jack more

Go there for football! Go! 5/3/2005

The succinct summary here is correct, and if you're a proper football fan, you will love this place. I can't vouch for its nightlife -- I don't think the ground floor makes a good bar otherwise -- but if you go to any other bar for sport, by which I mean football, you're doing a disservice to yourself. It's that great! Service is great. Good bartending. Setanta the TV channel charges $10 at the door on games only they carry -- otherwise there's no minimum. more

Typical NYU scene 3/26/2005

Your on 3rd ave in NYU area, you know what to expect. The music was a bit to loud here and if you are looking to get away from the masses and chill with your group of friends head downstairs. This place was pretty empty around 2am on a sat nite, which was surprising considering where it is. more

underated 8/27/2003

No anywhere I would go on a date. But this place is alot of fun. Great place to meet up with friends and have a chill night. Theres a dance floor in the back, which makes any bar better. And they have a downstairs where you can hang out for a more quiet, comfy room for friends. I love this place. more

Heaven 7/31/2003

I've been searching for a great sports bar like this for several years. My search is over! This is clearly the best place to be in North America if you are a soccer fan. Unlike other self-proclaimed soccer friendly bars, Nevada Smith's doesn't just show 2-3 soccer games per week and then switch back to baseball or basketball the rest of the time. At Nevada Smith's its soccer 24/7/365!! Pros: friendly people, soccer 24/7, affordable Cons: no wheat beers more

Comedy Thursdays 6/5/2003

I was at Nevadas last Thursday and caught the Comedy Soap Box - I'd seen it at the Underground before, so I'm happy it's come downtown. Wednesdays are open mic and free - I'm going back next week. more
