Editorial review from Citysearch 8/3/2012

Been to the Orignal Oyster twice in the past week for lunch and dinner. Excellent service both times. Server and staff were excellent, attentive and very nice without being in the way. Lunch and dinner outside overlooking the marina and Sandy Hook. Great to watch the boats while having excellent food. \r \r Lunch was 1/2 dozen oysters and a steak sandwich. All excellent. My better half had a tuna wrap and they whipped up some off the menu sides for my 2 year old son. Everything was great and plentiful.\r \r Dinner was seafood. We had a steamed clams and andouille appetizer. Excellent. Dinner was crab cakes (real crab cakes and a nice remoulade) and a broil seafood medley. Broiled seafood was shrimp, lobster, scallops, and fish filet with potatos and broccoli. Desert was creme brule and a chocolate/peanut butter yummy.\r \r This place is great. Nice people. Great food. Cold drinks. Nice amosphere. Eclectic shore scene hidden on the coast at the foot of the Highlands.\r \r Go there. Take friends. You will all go back.\r \r RSH more

Terrible! 8/30/2011

I went to the Oyster House with my husband for date night. We had purchased gift certificates thru Living Social. First, the menu isn't creative. I love seafood, but this was just uninspired. I had the king crab appitizer- it was grilled and served in the shell, which means you have to use your hands to pick out the meat. The crab was good, but there was no cajun flavor as it was described and my hands were covered in black from the grill. I had the Louisiana seafood entree - the rice was hard and undercooked and the seafood was swimming in a pool of unflavored sauce. To top it all off, after the meal was thru, the owner didn't want to accept the Living Social vouchers - because as he said "Common sense says we won't accept them for dinner". He was rude, loud and condesending. A very embarrassing end to a terrible meal. The prices were outrageous - plan on spending at least $75 per person if you want an app, entree and drink. Save your money and get a pizza - you'll thank me! more

The Original Oyster has returned 8/20/2011

A group of 4 visited the Original Oyster on 8/18/11. This is a restaurant we frequented for more than 20 years before it changed hands a number of years ago and the overall restaurant declined. We recently learned it reopened in May 2011, with the same chef and basically the same menu, so we decided to give it another chance. Let me first mention, we had a small issue concerning a coupon and spoke to the manager. He was very easy to talk with and equally as accommodating. My only negative criticism is that I thought the soups, I had the sampler, were a bit watered down and could have been a bit warmer. However the overall quality was well above average. I had the seafood linguini and it was delicious. It contained a large portion of lobster, shrimp, and scallops. It was served in a mouthwatering sauce. My wife had the Tilapia and Jumbo Shrimp Francaise. She frequently orders this entrée whenever it is offered. In her words, the shrimp were huge, bordering on being prawns, and the overall recipe was the most enjoyable she has experienced. The other couple each had the Louisiana Seafood Medley. Again it was loaded with pieces of lobster, shrimp, and scallops and was scrumptious. I must also say the service was impeccable. The waitress was warm, friendly, and provided above average service. While the entrée prices are somewhat higher than many other restaurants in the area, I feel the quality and quantity make it very competitive. more

Just Don't Do It! 8/19/2011

The fish was fresh but it didn't matter because they couldn't cook it to save their lives. There was no flavor to anything. It was the absolute worst meal we've had this year. And to add insult to injury it was so over-priced as to be ridiculous. I guarantee if you eat here you'll regret it. more
