I Was Always Told, "You Get What You Pay For"... 6/8/2006

I really hate to write anything negative about this business, as they really help a lot of people... but the old saying, "You get what you pay for", has been ringing in my ears. I recently went in to get caught up on some much needed dental work. I went to a couple of local dentists, and was just floored by their outrageous prices. I called around, trying to find someone that offered services in a price range that I could afford. That is how I found Neighborhood Services Organization, in Oklahoma City. The Neighborhood Services Organization does many wonderful things, helping low income residents of Oklahoma City with rental assistance, food, and many other programs that I am not really familiar with. I became a patient at their dental clinic because of their reasonable prices and set fees. They are not free, or based on income, but they charge one set fee for procedures, such as fillings, that are less than half the price of the other dentists I have spoken with. It is a wonderful service for people who can not just fork over thousands of dollars for dental work that may, or may not really be necessary. Besides the low prices, the employees at the dental clinic are very friendly, and truly care about helping the public. I had been quoted about $4000 at the dentist's office here in Moore. The dentist at NSO told me I had no decay, that I had just been brushing too hard and worn away a lot of my enamel, and that these dentists quoting me the outrageous prices were, "full of s**t".... Ok, the last statement brings me to the negatives. The dentist is a wonderful man, who I just want to hug... he is like everybody's grandpa... BUT... if you are sensitive to cursing, you should NOT go to this dental clinic... I'm used to it, and it doesn't usually bother me much, but there is a curse word in every sentence that comes out of his mouth. He's not cursing you, it's just the way it talks, but, yes, it would drive some people crazy. Also... I hate to even bring this up, but the dentist is very friendly and loves to talk to you. The problem is, he is a "spitter"! He spits a LOT, and it lands in your face while he is working on you! I really do love that guy, but that is something that is very, very bothersome to me! Another problem is, no matter when your appointment is scheduled, I have found that you will wait a minimum of two hours. I can deal with that, for the discounted rates, but I am fortunate in setting my own schedule, and I know many people don't have that luxury. Finally... I have had a couple fillings put in. The first one was on the back of my back tooth, where I had worn down the enamel. He did some bonding, to try to reduce the sensitivity. It is very rough, and I am thankful that it is not in an area where it can be seen. Next, I went in for a filling a little over a week ago. I wasn't having any pain, but part of my tooth had chipped off, so I knew I needed to fix it immediately. Well, the dentist had to shave some of it off, for the filling to fit securely. I knew he wasn't confident in it staying in, from the way he was talking, and he told me not to eat on that side for a couple of days. Three days later, the filling came out! I have been so frustrated over this! I cannot get in for another week to have it fixed, and NOW I am feeling some pain in that tooth! I can't help but think if I had paid the higher price at the dentist here, it would probably still be in place. I am so torn on the rating to give. I have been unhappy with the procedures I have undergone... but... I don't even feel that I have much right to complain, as they are doing so many wonderful things for people who might not otherwise afford the services. Wonderful people... wonderful organization, but I would say that if you have insurance or can afford a traditional dentist, go elsewhere. more
