No. Just no. 12/20/2007

Please don't eat here. Please. While the all-you-can-eat here is a reasonable $19.95, the service is just lousy. The food took more than 20 minutes to come to our table and when that was finished, it took our server another 10 minutes to come by and check on us. And she never once refilled my water. Also, most of our nigiri sushi looked old and dried out. Not to mention, it appeared they used the cheapest, most unattractive cuts of fish. The dining area is a mess. One of the tables next to us was stacked high with napkins and cutlery. This, mind you, was at 7:30pm, which is prime dinner service time. The decorations were blah and for some reason they have a huge filthy projection screen in one corner of the restaurant. If you're going to eat sushi in this area, you might as well go across the street to Sushi Rock, which is far superior. Pros: Decent all-you-can-eat price Cons: everything. more

Good food, bad service 1/17/2007

I heard about they have $20 all you can eat on Wed/Sun nights so I went and tried it, I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the food. But the service was just horrible, after I ordered my first round the staff pretty much ignored us, they're afraid that we'll order again since it's all you can eat. But I'll still go back for the food. Pros: Food Cons: Service more

Good Japanese Food in a Spare Environment 10/20/2006

Good Japanese food done simply. A nice little restaurant tucked away in Russian Hill - the place is small, so it's not for a large party, but great for a moderately-priced dinner with the significant other or best friend after work, or on a low-key weekend evening. The movie projections serve as conversation starters. Pros: Good Japanese Food in Russian Hill Cons: decor could use a little spice/style more

It grew on me 9/17/2006

I first went to nara in the fall of 2005 and must say that I was rather disappointed. So much time having passed, it is impossible for me to remember why. Upon returning, I have to question my prior assessment. Either something has drastically changed, or I was dead wrong. Nara is excellent, centrally located, and inexpensive. The fish was very good (and when given a premium for the low price, was superb). The atmosphere is somewhat less than romantic, but this does not detract much from the experience. The kicker is the price. I dine at some of the more expensive sushi restaurants in the city (sushi groove) where my bills have been as much as $130 for two people. Nara has never been over $35. Try it. Pros: value, value, value (and it is close to my house) Cons: atmosphere more

One of our Favorite Sushi Places in town 8/3/2006

Good size (large) pieces, great quality, highly recommended. Not over priced. great atmosphere, good for groups, Like the japanese anomation playing on the wall. Great take out. more

worst sushi place in the SF 6/25/2006

DO NOT EAT AT NARA!! Sub average fish and the worst service you money can buy. It took them 30 mins after I ordered to bring out the miso soup. 2 of us (a non packed crowd) on Sunday night...messed up our simple order, finally walked out after 45 mins. Cons: everything more

They're actually Japanese! 6/4/2006

I'm sad to discover that many Japanese restaurants in SF are operated by other Asians. There's usually a difference in flavor that I can tell. Thankfully, the people at Nara are actually Japanese. Whenever you go into an actual Japanese restaurant, it's custom for them to greet you in Japanese. I like the dishes here and I go often enough for them to recognize me. I'll agree with the other reviewers that the service is not always the best, but as far as taste and value, this is one of my favorites. Pros: Food Cons: Service, Parking more

a local chimes in 3/16/2006

i also live within stumbling distance of nara and have to agree about the sub-standard service there. the fish is decent and the prices are fair, but the service is always painfully slow. this is not a good place to go if you're in a hurry, but otherwise it's a fine place to grab some sushi. bonus points for the atmospheric drum n' bass they have been playing lately. if the service was as progressive as the music, i'd eat at nara every week. Pros: location, value, music Cons: service more

Qulaity Sushi/Great Value 10/26/2005

AMAZING PRICE FOR AN AMAZING APPETITE 8/21/2005

The food is terrific! It is delicious, fantastic, and definitely affordable! The chefs and the waitresses are entertaining and kind. The people and the place can make one feel warm and definitely welcome. The Wednesday and Sunday deals are unbeatable! Come on! All you can eat deal for great food??? What more can one ask for? They rock Polk street when it comes to great Japanese food! Once you try it, you can plan on coming back... keep up the good work guys! more

Great value and amazing service 8/9/2005

Good quality fish and really affordable. Lunch and dinner bento boxes are filling, yummy and so affordable. If you like to eat a lot os sushi there is an all you can eat on wednesday and sundays. Not worth the value for 2, but as a group the best deal. The chefs are entertaining and very kind. Its open till late some days and frankly I just like the fact that they don't rush you. more

decent sushi, not decent service 6/18/2005

ok, a local joint, i live around the corner, so it's close. fish is good, not the greatest, but you don't expect that from a neighbourhood place, service is spotty, when it's not busy, service is ok, when busy, it's crap, i've been seated and walked out because no one helped came to my table for more than 15min, the two first reviews are definitely suspicious, but i do agree the food is not too bad, the service on the other hand ... Pros: price not bad, neighbourhood Cons: service more

Quality sushi 4/15/2005

The atmosphere is fine, the service is fine, but I don't go there for any of those things. I go there because the quality of the sushi is great - some of the best I've had in SF. Pros: Great sushi, Try the rainbow roll, quick & good service Cons: Weird wall projector, Not the warmest feel more

I think the other reviews were done by employees 3/27/2005

The service here is friendly and attentive, but unfortunately the food is lacking. The fish wasn't that fresh, though they did have some creative rolls if you're into that. I read the reviews here and thought I might be headed for a hidden sushi gem, but was definitely disappointed. I'm new to SF and still on the search for a reasonably priced, good, authentic sushi place. Pros: good service, reasonable prices Cons: sub-par sushi more

Awesome 2/22/2005

Nara Sushi is fantastic- there's no place better. Where else else can you get the greatest sushi with the greatest service? The personal attention from the staff and owner, Sun, is unlike anything I've experienced. Nothing in this city can compare to Nara. Pros: Quality fish, Great ambience, Best staff more
