Editorial review from Citysearch 11/6/2012

Don't spend a dime here. The bartenders here are some of the worst I've ever seen, and that's saying something. I'd suggest going to any of the plethora of bars in the area. \r \r Among numerous other faults, they'll hook up their iPods to the sound system and play really horrific music. If you decide to put money in the extremely overpriced jukebox, they'll either override it (which means you wasted your money), or worse: take money out of your pile, put it in the jukebox, and pay the extra charge to bump your selection to play theirs. Don't object if they do this, they'll just kick you out.\r \r I kept coming because I mistakenly believed this bad behavior was limited to a few, but quickly realized the problem is systemic. They consistently treat customers like dirt. The barmaids, with a glaring exception, are better than the guys, but that's not saying much. more

Guy Bartenders are D-bags 3/21/2010

Been here after work a few times but it only took one time for a d.o.u.c.h.e bartender to ruin it. The place should be burned down. if this place considers itself Irish then they should go to Dublin to see how real Irish pubs are run. Again....another unhappy, loser, worthless, will never amount to s.h.i.t.t. bartenders. Basically a dive bar. There are so many like it almost right next to the place that don't have D-bags as bartenders. Avoid it unless your very hungry and want to pay $17 for a large platter. Only good thing about the place. Pros: the platter Cons: The bartender more

The most aggressive and off-putting bartender 8/20/2008

Never set foot in this pub, you've been warned!!!! \r I have had the chance to frequent Murphy's Pub three or four times, each time enjoying the beer and french fries. However, the last time I was there the bartender's behavior was aggressive, cruel, unacceptable and inexcusable. He simply decided to kick my friend and I out because we did not rush to order a second round of drinks. After using every profanity one could come up with, we were shocked to see him call his cop friends, who all come there during their off-hours. They seemed disinterested and biased against us and told us that he can yell at us, curse at us, even physically hurt us if he wants to, which later on I found out is illegal to do. My friend and I did nothing to deserve this kind of discrimination and still got a warning from the police, all members of the 17th precinct. In short, just like the other blogger wrote, try to never set foot in that place, especially if you're background is anything other than Irish. Pros: good price for beers Cons: dangerous and aggressive bartender more

makes midtown east less atrocious. even tolerable. 7/29/2008

been coming with team cupcakes for a few years now. never gave the staff a good reason to befriend us, but they did. best group of people and personalities working, ever. good pints, burgers, wings, pickles and soup. great for watching live sporting events and the bridge and tunnel crowd on saturdays. Pros: staff, food, happy hour, shift drinks. Cons: no neighborhood parking until after 7. more

Bartenders who scream at you? No thanks. 4/13/2008

Don't go here unless you want to get screamed at, and then not be served any beer. \r \r I went to this bar on April 12th, and our night started off great -- we really enjoyed the music and the first bartender was nice. Unfortunately, he went off and another bartender started. When my friend went to buy a beer, the bartender asked for her ID. Apparently he didn't like her attitude because when she showed the ID to him, he began yelling at her and refused to serve her. I went to speak with the manager, and the bartender came out from behind the bar and began screaming at me. The manager didn't bother intervening -- he just let his employee yell at a customer while he stood idly by. Whatever issues they have had with IDs or underage drinking (which was our guess), there's no cause to yell at customers, even if you don't particularly like them. The manager didn't even bother apologizing. We left and spent our money elsewhere and I recommend you do the same. \r \r There are much better bars in the area with much better staff. Pros: Music Cons: Horrible service and management more

Great Place; Joe rules 9/21/2007

Classic Irish Pub of yester-year. Joe the bartender a great conversationalist and the best listener. The nostolgic pictures, fresh beer; The chairs and glasses are always new; Tony the owner will always stop and say hello making you feel like a King. Thumbs up for Murphy's. I'm going back and they're better than ever. Character prevails. Oh yea; without question best burger in town!!!!! Guiness too!! Long live Murphy's!!\r \r Eddy W Pros: Staff, Owner, Food, music, beer, atmospere. more

Great Bartender & Pretty Women 8/14/2007

I wandered in on a Wednesday night after leaving a couple of other pubs on the same strip which were too loud. Joe the bartender was great, the yankees were on and every hour or so a group of actually pretty women who worked in the area came in and included me in their group. Had a great time. They also serve a good corned beef sandwich more

Average over-crowded Irish bar 7/28/2007

It was a special promotion: tiny glasses filled with Pilsner Urquell, plus a contest to win empty etched glasses. Most of us took home some glassware. BUT, the place was so crowded, and the backroom filled with a huge group that we had to leave It was just too tough to stand in the narrow section by the bar. From the looks of things, the place was a pretty ordinary bar, with somewhat of a pick up scene. Otherwise, it was completely ordinary, if too crowded. So we moved next door to Jamesons. --Drink Club is a roving group of NYC Drinkers Pros: promotions nights Cons: too crowded more

Best staff and service ;-) 5/2/2007

I live in UK and have visited family in New York twice in the last couple of years, Murphy's was their local. We visited several times on each trip. What can I say? The staff are great, really friendly therefore the atmosphere was too. My last visit was June 2006 and unfortunately I don't know when I will be able to visit again, but would reccommend Murphy's as the best pub I went in, definately, in fact one of the best pubs I've ever been in anywhere! :-) Pros: Staff friendliness, atmosphere, jukebox, Magners Irish Cider! Cons: Nil more

Wonderful place! 1/24/2007

My two best mates and I spend New Years Eve in this pub and had the time of our life! The bartenders were the most friendly that I have ever come in contact with. The prices were fair and the general atmosphere was amazing! I would recommend this pub to anyone visiting NYC! Pros: SERVICE, prices, atmosphere Cons: None! more

Friendliest Bartenders and crowd 12/6/2006

Best feeling bar I have been in for this mostly impersonal city. I felt like I was in Cheers. Bar food is rated best ever. more

Friendly Tolerant Staff 12/9/2005

Music at a reasonable volume for starters. Then, incredibly tolerant waiters & waitresses. They put up with our ever increasing numbers, seating the initial six of us at a table for four, then expanding as we did, even though the space is small. Putting up with spilled drinks, drunken revelry, repeated requests of ""would you mind shooting us?"" It started out crowded, but eased up a bit after mid-night. The whole staff spoke with Irish accents, probably studiously maintained. Great atmosphere of fun with an extremely tolerant staff. --Drink Club is a roving group of NYC drinkers Pros: friendly staff, talkable Cons: a bit cramped more

Great little bar 11/29/2005

Originally from Manchester, UK I spent 2 weeks in New York at the end of September 2005. Stumbled in jetlagged my first night there and every night for the next 2 weeks this was either the starting off point or finishing up point of my many pub crawls. Nice friendly service, great jukebox, great atmosphere. Sports on the telly yet not full of jocks. Pros: Relaxed, Service with a smile more

Real people 10/1/2005

Enter Murphy's and get away from the pretensious losers on 2nd avenue. Your greeted with a smile and an ice cold beer, not to mention the incredible burgers. Pros: servers, food Cons: music more

Home away from home 3/21/2005

This place was recomended to me by one of my friends who was there last year. The fish and chips were great, the blue-cheese burger was amazing and the Guinness is fresh and the staff is fantastic. This Hoosier boy will definately make this a regular stop every time I come to visit New York City. Pros: Food, Staff, ambiance Cons: high alcahol prices more

Lolly 9/14/2004

I'm from the UK. The last time my girlfriend and I visited NYC was Sept 2003. When we got of the plane we were desperate for a drink - after waking around for a while we stumbled into Murphy's. We were greeted by Joe's smile and infectious banter. For the rest of our week's stay we were unable to find another bar that matched Murphy's in any department. We spent every night in Murphy's and were amazed by the Joes' knowledge of cocktails -it seems bartending in NY really is a skill (unlike the UK). We'll be back in a few weeks time and our first port of call wll be Murphy's without a doubt!! ... Cant wait..... Pros: Atmosphere, Bartenders, Music more

Great place 8/12/2003

Cougars, Guinness, sports on the TVs, a good jukebox, the staff and match the nudie pics make this place great for an after work alcohol binge. Plus Matty K makes the place even more enjoyable with his presence. Ask the bartenders to point him out. :-) more

shrimp & chips! 8/5/2003

instead of beer batter fish n chips, i love the beer batter shrimp n chips - this is special order which they gladly obliged. i use the malt vinegar on the steak fries. the burgers (cheese n onions) are also very good. lot of regulars - i've been one for 3yrs. irish settlers makes it down right homey. SUM IT: this is the spot to eat drink & be merry. already looking fwd to eating lunch again. Pros: beer batter shrimp, cheese burgers, drinks Cons: small dining area more

he who enters is a stranger but once 3/12/2003

Joe and Joe are the best, and they are actually Irish, which is a nice touch at an Irish pub. Friendly and fun and full of great stories. They know everyone and are quick with the refills. It can get a little crowded, but it's a great spot. Pros: Joe & Joe, service, jukebox Cons: sometimes crowded more
