Best

I completely disagree with the previous statement regarding the service at the Muddy Pig. You should go to Applebees if you expect a waiter or bartender that will get down on one ...

Worst

I want to start this review by stating that I generally have pretty low standards when it comes to service. My main concern is whether or not the food and drinks are good--having ...

Best Beer selection in the Twin Cities 7/21/2006

Beer selection always changes - check the chalkboard on the wall for the updated list. You'll find beer on tap here that you can't find elsewhere in the Twin Cities except maybe around the corner at their other place...the Happy Gnome. The spread sampler with toasted baguette slices is fabulous, as well as the artichoke dip. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and t's great for people watching on weekend nites. more

Great Food 3/13/2006

Citysearch.com rated this as one of the best Singles bars. I don't agree to that - I thursday night that I went there were no singles at all. The food is probably the best bar food since I had in Boston. The chicken kiev with mashed potatoes is a killer. The beer selection is also good, but didn't have Bass to make me a Black and Tan. Parking is bit of a trouble but the food is too good to ignore it for that reason. The service wasn't terrible Pros: Food , Beer Cons: Atmosphere, Parking more

Really bad service 2/10/2006

My husband and my friends went to Muddy Pig for the first time last night. The place was really small and our food server was really snappy and rude to us. I felt like the server knew that the gratuity is automatically included in our bill, therefore she did not have to be polite to us. BAD, BAD, BAD SERVICE and will not come back again. Pros: good selection beer Cons: Bad service more

Is this place for real??? 1/25/2006

You will be saying that after you scarf down the giant chicken kiev w/mashed potatoes for 9 bucks. Its probably one of the best comfort meals I've had and at an astonishingly good deal! Plus they have a very lenghty beer list which only makes it better. The place is so chill I feel right at home when I walk in the door. Pros: Inexpensive food, Beer List, Free Parking Lot Cons: Slow servicesometimes more

Wake up and check the rudeness 12/30/2005

We have been going to the Pig since it opened, so we are kind of regulars. I agree the Menu is fantastic. Chicken Kiev is outstanding! Beer selections, and scotches are great. Good wine pairings as well. However there does seem to be a staffing problem. They are rude, the ladies as well as the men. The owners are consistantly nice and attentive, and joceyn and christian have always been attentive and welcoming. However I have friends who wont go there with us anymore because the girls(and guys) have been either rude, or ignored them. I don't expect a ""Cheers""welcome but I also don't expect to wait for 15 to 20 min to get a drink when the bar is slow. WAKE UP! You are losing customers! Don't be snobs to your locals! It will Bite you inthe A@$! Good luck with the Gnome! Pros: Beer selection, Food, local owners Cons: bitchy staff more

Cool little joint 11/4/2005

I really liked the drinks at this bar. I haven't tried the food yet but will definately give it a go next time. The only downside to this place is having to wait too long for a drink. The waitresses seem to be absorbed in conversation with the regulars a bit too much to notice you, even when you are obviously trying to get their attention. The prices are a bit steep as well. I wouldn't let that stop me from going again as I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Wish they would stay open later also. Pros: Good drink selection, Cosy atmosphere, Good menus Cons: High Prices, Slow service, Slow service more

Owner great - staff not 8/13/2005

These people trying to defend the wait staff are just as bad as the ones ripping the staff - as an average guy who's been to my share of pubs around the country, the service, especially by a couple of young women servers, was horrible. I, along with some other friends, used to frequent this place, but cannot in good conscience return until these women are gone. I've seen them literally throw food orders at customers, blatantly ignore customers, and just act plain childish. I've met the owner who seems like a great guy - I just hope he lets these servers go, they do not belong in the service industry. Believe the hype in these reviews people, the service is bad! Everything else however is great - just go to the bar and order from the owner/bartender; or walk in knowing you won't need to tip these women. Pros: Owner, Location, Beer/Food Cons: Staff, Staff, Staff more

My favorite bar, except... 5/26/2004

If you love beer this is the place for you. Dozens of unique Belgians, large, ever changing taps and a huge selection of beers from around the world (and Leinies and Premium for those with more sensitive palates). And they're reasonable as well--a bottle of Chimay is about $8, compared to some downtown Mpls bars (the News Roon-yuck!) where they are $12. The food is great as well. Try their 3 garlic pasta, and they make a good burger--except don't expect fries, there's no frier at the Pig. And they compete head to head with BW3 for wings. The biggest down side is the service. I go a couple times a month, and still have to wait 5 -10 mins to get a beer. Sit at the bar and its a little better. Fortunately for the owner, the beer and ambiance will keep you coming back. Check it out! Pros: Beer, Beer, Beer more

The Greatest! 10/7/2003

I've just recently moved here from the east coast and I have to say the Muddy Pig is one of the greatest joints I've ever been to! I've decided to make it one of my regular haunts. Every time I go there the staff is always friendly when you walk in the door, the waiters are knowledgeable and the food is fabulous. Maybe the food is a little more experience than your average bar, but look at what you're getting! Gourmet food and a bunch of it. The food here is better than a lot of places marked $$$ and $$$$ in citysearch. Pros: food, service, outside seating more

Great neighborhood bistro 6/22/2003

If I lived in the neighborhood, the Muddy Pig would be my local. The waiter/bartender was very courteous and helpful and the food was just wonderful. I had the three garlic pasta, but everything on the menu looked grand. Be sure to sit out on the patio because it is just lovely. They have a nice selection of micro-brews and the wine list is quite extensive also. This was my first visit, but I'll definately be back. Pros: Great food, Great Service, Great atmosshpere Cons: None! more

Fun in the Mud 5/28/2003

For something different on a Friday night, my husband and I left the burbs to eat dinner in St. Paul. We originally planned to go to Sweeneys, but since the patio was really crowded, we went down the street to the Muddy Pig. The friendly host graciously met us at the door and brought us to an outdoor table. We enjoyed looking over the versatile beer selection and were able to try a few that we have never before tried. Our waitress was very helpful with our food selection and was prompt with our beverages. The pasta dish was WONDERFUL, but the burger was so-so. Our two dinners and four beers came to $30.00. As a couple of very un-hip suburbanites, we felt very comfortable/welcomed and will make a point to bring other friends to the Muddy Pig. Pros: Good beer, Great service, Yummy pasta dish Cons: Unspectacular burger, Hard outside benches more

Beats all others 3/31/2003

The Muddy Pig is the perfect neighborhood bar. The owners are very nice and helpful, not to mention chatty. They're interested in what their patrons have to say, and willing to listen to praise (who isn't?), as well as criticism. And the food, well the food is excellent. I have yet to order anything that I don't like. They have the best tomato basil soup I've ever had. The only complaint I have is with the bar stools since they don't have a bottom ring to rest my feet on. Pros: Service, Reasonable Prices, Relaxed Cons: Parking more

Whiny drunken college crybabies... 2/20/2003

...need not apply. Simply put, the Muddy Pig is the BEST pub/bistro in the Cathederal Hill neighborhood. It's the only bar in the neighborhood that is neither too trendy (Chang's), too expensive(W.A. Frost), too smoky(Costello's), or too yuppified (Sweeny's). Plus, you will never need to worry about hearing crap like the Dave Matthew's Band or Eric Clapton playing over the stereo. The food is excellent... the burgers are amazing, as is the flank steak. The staff are VERY friendly (unless you are too drunk to function... like a few of the other reviewers here.), and the prices are affordable. Highly recommended for the mid-to-late 20-30-somethings who want good atmosphere without all the stupid, drunken college kids. Pros: service, food, atmosphere Cons: parking, sometimes crowded more

another fine selby food pub 1/19/2003

Highly recommended. Nice selection of Belgian beers, comfortable surroundings, and excellent food. The lightly breaded walleye with garlic mashed potatoes was the best I've ever had. I really didn't even notice the wait staff, which is refreshing, food was prompt and glasses always full, but not being pestered constantly. more

Bad & Boring 1/10/2003

For a fun time, this bar is not the place. Unfortuneatly the wait staff doesn't know how to smile and are extremely rude. The bartenders, had a hard time seeing anyone that wasn't their regular customer. I've never seen a bar barely filled with regulars, snobby to a new customer who was checking it out. I know I won't go back there. If you're not a regular, I guess they don't want you there either. Sad. Pros: Seating available, Close To Other Bars Cons: Service Not available, Expensive more

charming 12/26/2002

I read through the poignant saga of the low reviews, and apparently 15 of these animals went from Muddy Pig to Chang's to Sweeny's and were either refused entrance or thrown out of all of them, all in one evening. Costello's, Groveland Tap, Tavern on Grand, and McGovern's are the most comfortable bars. Saint Paul Grill, Frost, and Vine Park are the most elegant. Muddy Pig seems to have the best of both. It is woodsy, the food is distinctive (and maybe a little pricey) and they have a lovely selection of bottled Belgian beer. The owner/bartender, a really sweet guy, promised he will be getting at least one Belgian on tap. One small criticism is that the TV's were small and old (if you like watching TV while you drink, which I do). We spent a little over 20 dollars each for three beers, an appetizer and a sandwich. Pros: food, Belgian beers, atmosphere Cons: pricey more

Best place I ever ""happened"" upon 12/26/2002

Found this little place in the neighborhood. I never fail to have incredible service and great food. I eventually run into some other twenty-something that I know. Took a date there, just dark and unique enough to be successful! Pros: Good Cathedral Crowd Cons: Hidden more

Sour Grapes 12/6/2002

Some background: All of those ""1"" ratings are from a large group who was kicked out getting drunk and out of control at a birthday party. This group even returned a half-hour later and demanded the tip back from the server, who bought drinks ""on the house"" for the birthday guest of honor! Ignore all of those ""sour grapes"" reviews, and you will see that the Muddy Pig deserves an ""8+"" rating. (Click on the reviewers' names and you can see that they had problems in other area bars, too!) Pros: Beer selection, Friendly staff, Good food Cons: incomplete boardgames more

Good St. Paul bar 11/30/2002

The Muddy pig is a good St. Paul bar. The wait staff is friendly and helpful. They make great recommendations from the menu. The ambiance is incredible, I want to take all my friends here. Pros: great staff, low lighting, booths and tables more

Huh? 11/18/2002

I have never had a bad time at the Muddy Pig...I have always found the waitstaff to be very helpful. Yes, it might be a bit spendy...I will agree to that, but that won't keep me from going back. It sucks that somebody had a bad time, but the Muddy Pig is by no means a ""dump"". Cons: parking, neighborhood more
