Lets Go To The Zoo 7/5/2006

Kids board this summer ? One of our favorite places to go is the zoo !!! On the spur of the moment I'll tell the kids to pack a lunch, get on the sun screen and head out to the car. Our Milwaukee Co. Zoo has really changed from when I was a kid. (We went every year) Then-We had our famous gorilla named Samson that would scar the blank out of us when he hit the glass. We would get to feed the animals. The bears would sit up for a marshmallow. They loved them !!! We always had to bring bags of peanuts for the elephants. Yes the exhibits were boring back then for the animals. But... Now- My kids get to see the animals in exhibits that look like they are in the wild. They have so many fun things to do now days. ****New Sky Safari, Cost: $3 (round trip) Weather permitting You get high in the sky and it is sooooo cool to see the exhibits from above.( If you wear slip on shoes you may want to take them off. I did because I was afraid they would fall off and hit someone down below.) *****Expedition: Dinosaurs Cost: $2.50 Through September 4 26 life-size recreations of the prehistorical creatures will come to life right before your eyes !!! Follow the dino tracks painted on the path, behind the Small Mammal Building ( You will know when you are getting close !!!) ~ A La Carte & Sunset Zoofari ~ Held rain or shine. Reduced admission rates: $5 Adults; $3 Children (ages 3 to 12); Free parking Extended hours: 9:00 am. till 10:00 pm. *****Milwaukee Journal Sentinel A La Carte August 17, 18, 19 and 20 They call it Feast with the Beasts ~ food and music festival! ~29 restaurants (It's hard to pick what to eat because all the food is soooooooooooo good !) ~The sound of music fills the air with national and local bands performing at six different stages throughout the park. (My kids love to dance the evening away, even after walking through the zoo 4 times during the day) ~Wine Tent featuring jazz acts, and the Comedy Sportz ~Mutual Family Farm, as special activities are offered *****Sunset Zoofari June 28; July 5, 12, 19, 26; and August 2 These are Wednesday evenings ~ music, dancing and and an evening outside on the Flamingo Patio! ~July 12 – “76 Juliet” Classic and contemporary favorites. ~July 19 – The Jimmy Prince Show” 1950s and 60s band. Poodle skirts and bobby socks are the dress code ~July 26 – “5 Card Studs” This band performs the Brat Pack favorites. ~August 2 – “Mr. Lucky” The 1940s jazzy swing group. Milwaukee County Zoo 6/30/2006

Milwaukee County Zoo West Bluemound Rd Milwaukee WI http://www.milwaukeezoo.org/index.html We just went to the Zoo to see the Dinosaur exhibit. It was great! My 2 year old LOVED/HATED it! Right now he is in that Dinosaur phase and can't get enough of them. So he LOVED seeing them. But they were so big and loud, that he was scared and HATED them! Go figure! Other kids walked right by and weren't bothered at all. So we will go again and maybe he'll enjoy seeing them again, now that the is a bit more familiar with the show. Some new things this summer . . . the new Giraffe House will be opening in mid July. Looks very cool! Oh, and there is a new sky glider. Fun! $3 - check it out! Most people have been to the zoo before, but with such a great facility so close to home - go out there and enjoy it! Better yet, join the rest of us that have the Zoo Pass. Best deal in town if you have kids! Zoo Admission Beginning April 1, 2006 Adults: $9.75 Seniors: $8.75 Children: $6.75 Children (2 and under): Free Parking $8.00 Zoo Hours Monday -- Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays and Holidays: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. more

Milwaukee County Zoo 4/17/2006

The zoo has been a community favorite for decades. They have almost every animal on display imaginable. Though, they have a few downfalls as they've been constantly underconstruction for the past several years, "extra" displays cost extra $, & the admission is more than the clost of a movie + parking. They do have a half price day for Milwaukee County Residents every Wednesday. Once a month they also have a corporate sponsored free day, though it's so crowded you can't see the animals displayed in the buildings. more

Excellent zoo 4/16/2006

I have been to a few zoos, St. Louis, Madison, Racine, San Diego, Lincoln Park. I think that Milwaukee's Zoo ranks up there pretty high. The animals seem to have plenty of room to roam around and have a good time. The earlier in the morning you get there, the better. I think that the animals actually seem more at ease before the people get there and you'll have better luck seeing some fun stuff - like the polar bear playing in the swimming pool! Definitely check out the wolverine! He's a nut! more

Zoom In To The Zoo 4/1/2006

Hi Kristen. Our zoo is a wonderful place to go. And I am sure your son will like it. The zoo has a train, who doesn't like a train ride? It is at an additional cost, but it is more than fair. The zoo is in a nice wandering pattern so that you can get a good view of everything and anything and it is set up so that you see big animals and little animals all within a hundred yards. Some zoos are set up so that only reptiles are in one area and such. The trees are large and overgrown, lots of great shade from the sun in the summer. And it is open year round. If you really enjoy going to the zoo, you might want to consider getting a Zoological membership. With a membership pass, you can get into any zoo in the United States, and in a few other countries for free. There is a parking charge at this zoo location though. Last year it was $8, I don't know what it is this year. There are so many other places to visit also. What kinds of things are you looking for? Hopefully I can help you out more. Check out my posting on the Betty Brinn Museum. It's a hands on museum for KIDS! It is totally KOOL!! Hope to hear back from you soon. Krista more

Membership has it's benefits. 3/11/2006

Getting a Zoo Pass Plus is one of the better family entertainment values I have found. (The "Plus" is the parking, without the "Plus" parking is $7/each time although there is ample street parking in the area) If your children are younger, you will love having the freedom to drop in for an hour or two and when fatigue starts to show (as it will, so many places to walk, so much to see) you feel no remorse over leaving to return another day. I know a fair few families (ours included) who stop in nearly every week during warmer weather -- and never tire of the experience. There are so many animals to see, special exhibits, shows, the zoo train - naturally, and frequent special programming. Our favorite is night light at the zoo each December, but we also enjoy the behind the scenes weekends (there happens to be one right now) when you talk to zoo keepers and learn so much more about the animals and their care. And Zoo Classes are a huge hit with all of the kids we know (classes are divided by age, so activities are appropriate for your child from 2 up.) Ample picnic spots mean you can bring your own lunch or take advantage of one of the zoo's many restaurants. more

Perfect Day 3/10/2006

We spent a wonderful afternoon at the Milwaukee County Zoo today and my two preschoolers LOVED the Big Cat House. They have done marvelous things with the new house, and I highly recommend making it a stop early in the spring before the crowds get too crazy in the summer. more

great zoo! 11/15/2005

For the price this zoo is awesome. My toddler loved it, they have easily accessable walking paths, the train is fun and most of all--it is CHEAP. At least for CA standards they are. I am from WI but live in CA and the famous san dieog zoo is $20+ for admission. I frianky think the milwaukee zoo is FAR better, both exhibit wise and for the best bang for your buck--milwaukee has it hands down. parking can get more expensive in milwaukee but it is worth it for a fun day at the zoo with the kids. Park on the street outside the zoo (wisconsin ave.) for free parking. It is what we did. more

What better way to spend a day 10/26/2005

There is nothing better to do on a Spring or Summer day then head down to the Milwaukee County Zoo, which in my opinion is one of the best in the Midwest. It is HUGE so remember to bring comfortable walking shoes if you wanna even make it halfway around. This is a great place to take kids to get them involved face to face with animals. In the past they used to let the peacocks and flamingos walk around the park without any supervision but from whatI've heard they've changed that. Despite this it is still a great place to spend an afternoon... watch out for high food/parking costs though. In addition they also offer deals on Wednesdays! more

Great zoo! 10/23/2005

The Milwaukee County zoo, in my opinion, is a great zoo to visit. There is a ton to see. I have been to many zoo's throughout the US, and this zoo has a lot to offer. There are many different areas including the primates, the aquarium, the reptiles, the children's zoo area, and tons of outdoor exhibits. There is a train to ride, and a carousel. Lots of concessions. Our family has a membership, and we have gone to many of the night events that the zoo holds. A taste of Milwaukee is a nice food event to attend. The gift shop, of course, is overpriced, but you will be sucked in if you have any children with you. Another place not to miss if you live in the area or are visiting. more

great family place 9/30/2005

the county zoo offers a great place to see some animals up close and personal. the zoo is not what it was back the 80's. they seem to have fewer animals - some exhibits will have none at all. that being said - usually the train can make up for other disappointments along the way. more

The ZOO is the best! 9/14/2005

I can't believe I ever thought that I would not enjoy the zoo as much as I did as a child...or even moreso! I usually stop in about once a summer, and I am never disappointed. Some say it is pricey, which it probably is if you have a whole family, but for a whole day of fun and a special treat, it is worth it! Everything is usually very well maintained and the animals always seem happy in their environments. Every once in awhile they let you know by putting on a show, too! My favorites are the felines, the polar bears and the elephants...and of course the gorillas! more

Milwaukee County Zoo - worth the trip 9/9/2005

The Milwaukee Zoo is one of the better zoos I have seen. The exhibits are wonderful. The animals appear to be well cared for. There is usually at least one special, intereactive area each year. I would recommend purchasing the zoo pass. If you have a larger family it pays for itself pretty quickly. If you get the plus membership it also includes parking. If you don't have a membership, I would recommend parking on the street as parking is rather costly. When you visit, though, make sure to check out the polar bears. This is by far one of the best exhibits. more

Classic old fashion fun! 8/16/2005

The Milwaukee County Zoo is probably the best zoo in Wisconsin. Currently they are featuring an exhibit where you can interact with sting rays. They also have a great exhibit on Wisconsin farming. It is a lot of fun for small children. The rest of the zoo has the average zoo things, monkeys, lions, tigers, pengiuns, the like. All of the animals are well cared for and live in clean habitats. Best of all, tickets are cheap! Less than $10 for an adult, even cheaper for children. more

The zoo just keeps getting better 8/15/2005

With the addition of the new cat house in 2005 along with the sting ray exhibit the Milwaukee County Zoo is once again becoming a great zoo to visit. With night events like zoofari and others the zoo is bringing people back and letting a new generation of children visit the animals. The zoo is something that is always on my list to do each year. more

A Whole Day Activity 8/7/2005

If you are in the mood to take adrive somewhere, the Milwaukee County Zoo is a great place to drive to. They are one of the largest zoos in the area. They have many animals that other zoos in the area do not have, and they have many of each of these animals so there is always something being done to watch. The animals have habitats set up that are just like in nature, so they are exciting to look at and well kept. The zoo offers animal shows during the day which are very entertaining. Besides the animals and shows, they have gift shops to search through and food stands to try out. It definately is a whole day activity. more

Worth the Drivw 8/2/2005

If you aren't from the area, the Milwaukee County Zoo is well worth the drive there. You can spend an entire day there and see everything there is too see. They have so many different animals, and several of each kind, that there is always some kind of activity going on. The animals each have their own habitat that is kept clean. There are also animal shows that are a lot of fun to watch, food booths, and souveniour shops. more
