Mexican Gardens Restaurant

Recently went in to eat here the other day and all I can say is WOW... they put out their Lenten Menu and they have a BlackBean Chipoltle Burger with Sweet Potatoe Fries that is out of this world!! This place remains to be one of my favorite spots to eat...Service and staff are excellent and make you feel right at home!! more

We walked in and were seated in front of a TV with Family Guy playing. Yes, in the middle of the restaurant! I know huh? I couldn't believe it either. (We had a 4 year old with our party and there were several other children throughout the restaurant.) They changed the channel when we asked. Our meal was fair, not great, but not really bad. The server was very sweet and very attentive. We asked for flan, but they said that they tried serving it once but nobody bought it so they quit. ??? Seriously? Then, about 10 minutes before we left they flashed the lights a couple of times. We had already given them our credit card and were simply waiting for them to return with the slip so that we could sign it and leave. WE were waiting on THEM, not the other way around, at the time they flashed the lights. In the mean time they turned the lights off in the bar, the entrance and the parking lit. We signed it and then we had to walk through the half dark bar area, a COMPLETELY dark entry way and dark parking lot. I used my flashlight to help our party leave this place. I have never dined in a restaurant that played cartoons, night-time cartoons at that, during dinner time. I have NEVER had a restaurant flash the lights on us 10 minutes before they close, or any other time. I have NEVER had to walk through a darkened room and parking lot and I've eaten all over the world! CLEARLY this was ONLY about money, not service, not quality, not logic, and certainly not professionalism. Next time I'm in town I'd rather eat a burrito from a 7-11 than to have to deal with this really wacky owner! The only reason this is a 2 star review and not a 1 star review was because of the server. I doubt that I'll have to even think about it though as I doubt this place will be open by the time I get back in town. NOT a fun dining experience! more

Have been going here for many years too many to count and lately with every visit the food has gotten worse. My visit today the food tasted off and the refried beans had to be eaten with a spoon they were so watered down. When I checked out I asked if they have changed owners and she got snippy and said no, the way she reacted you could tell that they have been asked that question alot. They have even raised the prices, I understand everyone has to raise prices to make a profit however don't raise prices and cheapen up the food because they have lost my bussiness. more

My family and I have been going to Mexican Gardens for years, the food is soo good and the service is so friendly, alot of the staff has been there for along time so they know what they are doing and they will treat you right!! They have an awesome 2 for $20 deal where you get your choice of 1 appitizer and 2 dinners, cant go wrong with that, the chips are home made too and if you go during happy hour the draft beer is $2!! Yummy, yummy folks! Good job Mexican Gardens, there is a reason why you are the best mexican restaurant downriver!! more

We were told we could get the dinner and a movie deal before ordering our meal, ordered drinks which came out wrong the first time, had the server switch shifts with no one letting us know, had decent (at best) food, and then when the bill came, said that they ran out of movie tickets. The manager offered a free dessert or drink, but we just wanted to get out of there with our tickets we were told were there. The manager said he'd leave a note for the staff to have tickets for us for the next day and lo and behold, the next day came and no note was left. Now we have to wait 4 more days until the general manager comes in to see if we can even get the tickets at all. Horrible customer service, managers are very unprofessional and do not keep their word. more

Ok...so my wife and I check out a movie at the MJR Theater and decided to check out Mexican Gardens for dinner after. We looked at the menu and got excited for the food they had listed. I ordered the Chimichanga dinner and my wife did the same. The waitress said ""ok, thanks! I'll be right back with your food!"". My wife and I didn't even get done chewing a SINGLE CHIP from the chips and salsa they bring out and here comes our food placed in front of us. We thought...okay...this can't be right. McDonalds isn't anywhere NEAR this fast for service. The food looked great, and the portions were big and would have easliy had left overs (hell, we could have even split a dinner) however, the chicken within our food was cold, the cheese wasn't even melted inside them (in fact, you could clearly see the cheese shreds that were still intact and not melted) and overall, the food didn't taste very good. We were very upset. Instead of complaining to the really young staff that works here, we decided it would be best to leave the food and not take it home. We paid and left...knowing we would never return. Just prior to leaving the waitress asked if we wanted boxes, we simply said ""no"" and she had a concerned look on her face as did we. Point is, she got the message. This, of course, was none of her fault...she was only the server. There was NO WAY IN HELL they prepared two adult meals let alone COOK THEM, within what seemed to be about 30 seconds of us ordering. Scary stuff. We will NOT be going back here. Sorry...but that's the truth. Looks like a few others have had a bad experience here too, and that is really unfortunate....because like I said...the food did indeed look very good...but when you get served cold food and gets to you faster than McDonalds would ever think of giving you food...that is cause for concern. Granted, this was ONLY OUR EXPERIENCE. There are many people that have had a very good experience and really enjoyed their food. So don't use our experience as the ""end all see all"" in your decision. Nobody should. If you are interested in going, then go! Maybe we had a new cook...or well...didn't have a cook because like I said earlier...there was no way it was cooked within the time frame we order. Absolutely impossible. Someone mentioned they got there a half hour before they closed and didn't have a good experience. Everyones meal should be hot and fresh no matter what time it is. End of story. Thanks for reading. Just got back from this place. Knew we should have left when we noticed they were less than an hour away from closing. The wait staff seemed like they were in a big hurry to get us in and out as fast as they could and were constantly looking at their watches and clocks. Our waitress took our orders and she said ""I'll be back in one minute"". Problem is, she was. It was more like five minutes but this was for a table of 4 guys and full dinners. Do they have stoves in the kitchen? The food was cold in the middle but we dared not ask or say anything. I mean, if they couldn't be bothered to even microwave the food for 20 seconds, why would they put the oven or stove on? The Mexican sandwich I ordered had carrots and potatoes in it. I ordered a mexican sandwich, not a pot roast. I have never had a mexican sandwich with carrots and potatoes. The chicken chimichangas didn't taste right and were not hot at all in the middle. It was a horrid experience and we won't ever be back. Now all 4 of us feel like our stomachs are doing flip flops. Why not complain to the manager? We discussed it but knew we'd never be back and besides, he was probably in a hurry to get home too. Pros: Made it out before ruining our drawers Cons: That this place is open for business more

I dont know why people crowd into this place. Only thing i can think of is cuz there s no other mexican around. Mexican Gardens has good food, fair prices and decent service but the SMOKE is too much.\r First you have to walk through and/or wait in the smokey bar area to get a table and then even is the non-smoking area it still smells like smoke. I have made a promise to no longer go to places that reek of smoke. more

The food is great and the prices too. My husband loves to come here, and I not being a mexican food fan can find things I enjoy too (though they look at me funny when I order french fries and a chicken qusidea). But don't go on a Friday or Saturday night and expect to just sit down. The are ALWAYS jammed packed, but the wait is usually about 30 minutes, and with the bar and large screen TV, the time flys by. more

The food at Mexican Gardens is very good, but the service leaves much to be desired. I grew up in Southgate and have been going to Mexican Gardens for as long as I can remember. The food is what keeps my husband and family coming back. We are regulars there, at least once a week, but the servers do not ever act as if they have ever seen us before. If we were poor tippers, I could understand, but we tip at least 20% and we are both in the restaurant business, so I just don't understand why we are never given very friendly service. Mary acts as if she is ""put out"" just to seat people and it is usually downhill with any of the servers. We consider not going back just because of the unfriendly service, but we still go back?! We have visited Mexican Gardens since I was a kid. We have seen it grow and change throughout the years but the friendly, propmt service has always been there. It is nice to go into a restaurant and be recognized by the staff. They make you feel at home. The food is very authentic and tasty. It is the best Mexican Restaurant in the area. The Juanito Burrito is fabulous. My kids love the chicken fajitas. And you should see the new decor they got. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and I love the new booths. They give you more privacy than the old ones. When we are on vacation, we can't wait to come back to eat there food. Pros: Great Food, Warm atmosphere, Friendly Staff Cons: Outdoor lighting more

I moved to this area in 1989 when I was 9 and this was the first Mexican resturant we ate at in this neighborhood, and it was the last. it was the family favorite for years. If I still lived there I would still go every friday with my kids. This place was tiny back in the day now it is beatiful and I'm sure it still is. The last time ate there was in 95 and I still talk about it. YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY! The best salsa! The beef TACOS ARE GREAT! more

Best Mexican food around. Prices are great. Service is very friendly & prompt. There is a bar and big screen to entertain you while you wait, although the ample seating is deceiving. You think you will wait and hour and it's 10 minutes. May I recommend the enchilada's. They serve them with traditional brown sauce and are the best I've ever had. more
