Editorial review from Citysearch 11/15/2012

Metro Cat Hospital is amazing. The front desk staff and vet techs are always friendly and helpful. The veterinarians really care about the cats and about making sure the owners know what is going on. \r \r Our first positive experience at Metro Cat Hospital was with Dr. Tubman. I didn't meet him but my husband took one of our cats in for an eye problem. The appointment was on a Saturday. The eye didn't need treatment at the time of the appointment, but if it got worse it would need eye drops. My husband assumed, okay, I'll call Monday if it looks like the cat will need the drops, since the clinic is closed Sunday. The doctor actually gave my husband his email address and said if it got significantly worse on Sunday, email him and he'd come back into the clinic and meet my husband and give him the eye drops, so he wouldn't have to wait until Monday. We loved that he didn't prescribe us something unnecessary, but was so ready to help us obtain the prescription should we need it in the future. \r \r Our second cat is a patient of Dr. Kaplan. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Kaplan. He is so kind and caring and reassuring. Our second cat had a handful of problems when we brought her home from the shelter, that we did not know about. Dr. Kaplan took the time to explain to us what she needed and what our options were. Several tests needed to be run, and Dr. Kaplan called me personally as soon as each test came back. He really helped ease any anxiety we had about our cat's health. Our new cat is doing wonderfully now. \r \r All of the staff at Metro Cat have also been very helpful with advice on how to introduce a second cat into the home. As owners of more than one cat know, getting a second adult cat is not always easy. They provided guidance and reassurance and even had suggestions for products/toys to use but never pushed any purchases on us. \r \r As for the costs, the staff pretty much always gave us quotes for what would be done. Yes, it is expensive providing veterinary care to cats. We have cat insurance for our first cat and are in the process of applying for the second cat, so that future issues that come up will hopefully be covered. When choosing a vet, our number priority is the health of our kitties and we know we have chosen the right vet for them. more

A Safe Place for Cats 3/26/2012

I've been to a few different veterinary hospitals around the city, and no experience has been as comforting and easy as bringing my cat to Metro Cat Hospital. We brought him in for a routine check-up and met with Dr. Greenough (apologies for misspelling his name). He was gentle and friendly with our cat, and with us. A few weeks later, my cat had a seizure, and the hospital accommodated us right away. I got a call from the vet on a Sunday to let me know the results of the blood work. They truly care about their patients. I should also add, the prices for services here are totally reasonable given the level of care we receive. Pros: null Cons: null more

Metro Cat Hospital is a great place!!! Highly recommend it! 10/6/2009

This place did a great job caring for my cat and explaining the aftercare. It was reasonably priced for an emergency ( poor kitty cat was unable to potty and in a lot of discomfort) and Dr Kaplan basically saved her! more

The Best in Boston 11/26/2008

My cat came from a shelter and had immediate health problems. I went to two different vets that couldn't find anything specifically wrong with my cat. On my first visit to MetroCat Dr. Kaplan did a head to tail exam and ran a few tests. Within days we had answers and were able to come up with a treatment plan. That was four years ago, and I will not go to anyone else. Pros: Caring Staff, Great Vets, Easily Accessible, Clean Environment more

Our chosen new vet 7/1/2008

My pets have been seen by two of the vets. Both visits were thorough, and each took a great deal of time and talked to me at some length. The first time my cat with more health problems was seen the vet observed all the health issues before being told the cat's whole history. The other vet was also very good with the other cat which is the misbehaved one of the two - couldn't believe he didn't nip at the vet. Well handled on her part. Lifestyle changes for the unhealthy cat were suggested in very non-accusatory ways (cat's overweight). No pressure to buy their food, but a *large* sample bag was given. Actually went back for it because the cats loved it and it is working. Older building and office, but very clean. Surprisingly, parking wasn't a problem (at least late morning) given the Brookline location. Thought the pricing was typical. They are part of a larger vet network (VCA Animal Hospitals), so you also have someone above their head vets to take up issues with if you are not satisfied with your care. more

Wouldn't trust any other vet or staff elsewhere! 2/25/2008

I love this office. From the friendly, educated front office staff who geniunly care for my cats and know what's going on with them to Dr. Kaplan who has been taking care of my cats for years now. From my cat who has a chronic illness to my healthy cat, Dr. K calls and checks on them on the wkends, responds to any questions, concerns I have promptly no matter how absurd they are. Pros: great staff, caring, educated Cons: can be very busy in waiting area more

What's Not to Love? 1/22/2008

I was hesitant to go here after seeing the mixed reviews, but after my first visit, I'd shout for them from the rooftops. They ran on time and had impeccably clean exam rooms. The exam was more than adequate, and when I requested extra attention to her teeth, I got it without question. My cat was much more relaxed at a cat-only vet, very inquisitive. (In comparison, at Porter Square Vets, she tried to climb on my head.) My cat was given treats and her nails were clipped. There were two people to hold her for nail clipping and her vaccination, both expertly done. My cat is a hisser, and they were not fazed in the least. When she did not respond to one method of comforting, they tried another, and made sure she was perfectly comfortable before stopping. My vet LOVED my cat, laughed at her attitude, oohed and ahhed over her, introduced me to the two office cats that sleep on the printer and computer monitor, respectively. They did not push me to bring in a stool sample (which I did, and which did cost extra), but informed me it was an option. When I expressed interest in their prescription dental food, they offered me a "sample" . . . which was a quart bag full of food. They have wonderful cat beds and toys for sale, as well as other products they recommend. Pros: Location, Standard of Care more

No. Go elsewhere. 8/11/2007

I called for an apointment with my cat which needed alot of hair removed that had been severely entangled and they basically blew me off and gave me numbers of groomers to call because their was not an open eposed wound. more

I had some issues with this practice, but after notifying them, they seemed genuinely interested in improving. Judge for yourself. more

Fantastic care for your cat! 2/1/2007

I've been taking my cats to Metro Cat Hospital for 5 years now, and have never received anything but attentive, caring, and quality service. All of the vets I have seen at Metro Cat Hospital have been far more attuned to cats than other vets I've used (and I used to work for one!). After my mother ran into a dead end with her own vets in Florida, I called Dr. Kaplan and he was able to offer some diagnostic suggestions over the phone about my mother's cat, based on breed, age, general condition, and symptoms, that turned out to be right on. As far as pricing goes, I've comparison shopped around the city and haven't found anyone less expensive. In fact, when my cat had to have surgery to remove an obstruction from her intestine, I transferred her from the Angell Memorial Emergency Clinic to Metro Cat and saved nearly $1000 on the procedure, medications, and hospitalization. I couldn't be happier with Metro Cat! Pros: personal service, patient and attentive to owners as well as pets Cons: They only care for cats (which is something of a plus), but it means I have to have a separate vet for my dog. more

decent vets... if you don't have a car 6/13/2006

I took my cat to Metro Cat Hospital when I lived in Brookline, because I didn't have a car, and this was the closest veterinarian that was readily accessible by the T. They were my first vets, so I couldn't really compare them to anyone else, but the office was always friendly, and they provide a complimentary claw-clipping with every exam, which was nice. However, their exams always seemed a bit rushed and cursory, and their prices were expensive, even compared to the vet I used in the bay area (where the cost of living is even higher). Additionally, even though I brought my cat into Metro several times, they *never* diagnosed a cataract that my cat was born with. That cataract was later diagnosed by my vet in the bay area, who was *much* more thorough and careful with his examination of my cat and generally seemed like he cared much more about his patients. Basically, Metro Cat Hospital does a competent job and is conveniently located, but if you have a car, there are probably friendlier, cheaper, and more thorough vets in the Boston area. Pros: convenient by T, easy metered parking Cons: overpriced, not thorough, impersonal more
