Callen-Lorde is geared towards the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual community, but welcome any and all patients. They have sliding scale rates for the uninsured and you can get same day emergency appointments for urgent issues inappropriate to an emergency room. That said, on a recent visit my mysterious stomach ailment was unable to be diagnosed, which would have ben fine (these things happen all the time), but I was shoved off onto a specialist before some basic tests that would have clarified the nature of the problem was performed. I don't say this to reflect negatively on the center, which I use as my main healthcare source, but to emphasize that you must always be an advocate for your own care, especially in a busy setting like Callen-Lorde. Certainly, they are a godsend when it comes to queer-friendly health and healthcare for the uninsured.
