We only go to the Mayan for our daughter's birthdays, and mostly for the show. The food was horrible last year, and last night it was better. not great, just better. You would ...

Horrible food and service 6/9/2008

I went to the Mayan last Saturday to celebrate my birthday. I got there at 5:30 and requested a table for 15 people that would be arriving at at 6:30 pm. They would not let us sit until every single person in the party arrived, which was ridiculous, since I had about 12 guests in the restaurant lobby at 6:30. Anyways, we had to wait another 40 minutes to be sitted at our table because there were other people were eating at it. Once we were sitted, the waiter took forever to get our drinks and orders!!! We ended up start eating at 8 pm! I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone, the service was HORRIBLE and so was the food. I even left 2/3 of my food on the plate. Very disappointing!!! Cons: You can't make reservations ahead of time on Saturdays, food was cold and not tasty more

better than before 12/11/2007

I went to the Mayan when it first openned and thought the food was AWFUL. Straight from a can for sure. I went back last week and the food was much better quality. The price is a little high but you are paying for high school diving practice.\r \r Good job, Larry, you got something right. Pros: much better food and menu selections. the nachos were AWESOME Cons: too loud for conversation more

shockingly.....not bad 12/8/2007

First of all, I need to state that my partner and I went here as sort of a sarcastic joke. And were properly ashamed of ourselves afterward. We don't have any children, and figured it'd be horribly kitschy and painful. It was a little bit, with the ""Mayans"" running and round and doing musical numbers, but it's for kids so that's fine and to be expected. What we didn't expect was that it was gorgeous!!! The scenery alone would have made up for the lackluster food we expected....but it wasn't. His roast chicken was awesome, ditto his sweet potatoes and spinach. They graciously made me crab enchiladas (not on the menu) and they were excellent. The salsa was fairly spicy too, which suprised me. And they only charged me the price of the steak enchiladas, which was amazing. Service was okay, not awesome but not awful either (I'd say typical for this area). I don't know that we'll return anytime soon b/c it is sort of a family place and I like dining w/out the company of minors, but definately worth a try. Pros: amazing scenery, totally decent food Cons: singing natives, lots of kids (to be expected though, and not cons for everyone) more

Dont waste your time 7/17/2007

I went to The Mayan only to find out they were closed for remodeling. Good. Went back when the website said they would be re-opening, only to find out they changed the opening to the next week when we got there. Tryed again Monday only to find out they are the only restaurant in Utah to be closed on a Monday. What a joke. Pros: Keeps the kids entertained Cons: Not good service. more

Very awesome! Changed again, for the better 4/24/2007

I love the Mayan! They've changed it back from the cafeteria style thing, and your food is brought to you, so I enjoy it more now. The food is good. My husband and I got the two fisted burrito, which is HUGE, and both loved it. Service was good, we had no problems getting refills. The setting is different, but cool. Oh, and you get free sopapillas, which are awesome! Pros: Big portions for price, free dessert, cool setting Cons: ? more

Avoid this place at all costs! 4/11/2007

This is the worst place that I have ever been. The service is bad, the food is bad, and you would be better going to Taco Bell. There are divers, that?s the only good thing. The set-up is awful. I don't know what they were thinking, maybe, ""how could we screw up a restaurant?, they succeeded at that. \r \r Too, bad, great potential for a quality place turned into this\r Pros: I don't know Cons: Poor attempt more

eeek 8/24/2006

Gosh, is this place awful. The food is cafetaria style and the service is almost like the cafetaria lady in elementary school. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it, though I guess it's more about the cliffdivers than anything else. more

LOMG WAIT, GOOD FOOD 8/16/2006

WE HAD TO WAIT ABOUT 20MIN, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS 2:00 IN AFTERNOON AND THERE WAS HARDLEY ANYONE THERE. THE FOOD WAS GOOD AND WE GOT A TABLE BY THE CLIFF DIVERS SO WE GOT TO SEE THE SHOW TWICE, THE KIDS LOVED IT. THE FOOD WAS REALLY GOOD AND THEY GIVE YOU PLENTY. Pros: GOOD FOOD, KID FRIENDLY Cons: LONG WAIT more

Going out of Business? 7/16/2006

We took our son for his 12th birthday and what a flop! We arrived after the dinner rush, only to find tables that needed bused and an unfriendly staff. The food was horrible, after waiting 30 minutes to be seated you order your food; then proceed to stand cafeteria style and wait for them to prepare the meals. We had a group of six so by the time all the food was ready the food was cold. We had a stoller and our server asked we could carry it up the stairs? What? Anyway, the evening was a flop and we paid $60.00 too much for our meals. WOW this place has really changed since last time we had dinner. Are they trying to run out of business or did we just catch you on a bad night??? Pros: ambiance Cons: terrible food more

Way too loud, cold food no flavor 6/27/2006

A terrible dining experience. Can't converse at the table as it's so loud. The talking decor, the slow service and a maze to navigate. The food was cold, bland and who knows what it looked like. It was so dark in there. What was Larry Miller thinking? Cons: slow, bland and LOUD more

Are you kidding? 6/27/2006

My family and I went there expecting a wonderful meal with a perfect atmosphere. The setting was great however.....THE FOOD! It reminded me of Mexican Day in my elementary school cafeteria. more

User review by toeychild 5/21/2006

If it ever changes back to the old Mayan we'll be there. Waited in line for 2 1/2 hours, then all the tables were empty anyway, no one bothered to tell us about the changes, would have been nice to know before the wait. Pros: good service Cons: cafeteria style, long wait, empty tables more

Very sad. Fun place with horrid food. 5/12/2006

I hate it that this place has gotten so bad. The food here has never been great but it was tolerable because it is so much fun. However, they have changed so that you have to order your food at the front (a la Taco Bell). Actually, if the food were as good as Taco Bell, it would be bearable. But it's not. The food is so bad that it's not worth the money. Pros: atmosphere Cons: THE FOOD more

It's pretty an all but the food isn't worth it 4/19/2006

It has been a little while since I've been, but the lines are long, the food isn't very good, but the show is kinda cool. more

There's much better in Utah... 2/12/2006

The Mayan is a trendy place to eat in Utah. I used to enjoy going there. The atmosphere is enjoyable, however they now have you order then stand in line and wait for your food before you go and sit down - what a nice way to spend time with your party talking in line waiting for your food. And the food...I have had better frozen mexican food from the grocer's freezer. Pros: atmosphere Cons: lines, food more

If you don't bring kids, don't go 1/27/2006

The Mayan is a fun place to take children, but if you're going for a romantic evening out, don't waste your time--the food is not that great and the ambience is too wild and the ordering process made me feel like I was at a high school cafeteria. With kids, however, I'd recommend it. Pros: good for kids Cons: not romantic, food is weak, felt like a cafeteria more

I love the new changes 1/4/2006

I don't know what the complaining is about. I love the new changes. We had no wait at all, where as before we always stood in line for 45 minutes to 2 hours. The menu has less choices but is still adequate. I didn't have to carry my food to the table like some people have posted here and the server checked on us constantly filling our drinks, etc. I love this place and always take friends visiting from out of state there. I've never had anything but a great experience. Pros: atmosphere, food, service more

Mayan Disappointment 11/28/2005

If you go to the Mayan to see cliff divers and animated animal puppets, you'll probably like it. If you go to have good Mexican Food, you won't like it. more

We Won't Be Back 9/12/2005

It's safe to say we've eaten our last meal at the Mayan. The new cafeteria system makes what at least used to be a unique restaurant feel like the ultimate turn 'em and burn 'em joint. We never felt relaxed enough to enjoy the dining experience. The food was average. The menu seems to have been reduced by about 50%. More empty tables than full tables zapped the energy that used to be there. Even my 9 year-old (which is the only reason we go to the Mayan) was dissappointed. Larry, you made a mistake. It was terrible. more

Sad...Such great potential. 9/8/2005

Well, what can I say, my partner and I loved this place when it opened. It was a great concept and a few cute divers. The food was so, so but the place had energy, it was such great fun! But, now whats happened, you pick up a menu, grab a tray and stand in a long line to order your food just like you do in grade school? So sad Ill go back because I think this place really has potential. Im curious when they plan to hire new management and make this place something. The way it used to be? Pros: great concept, friendly, cute divers Cons: cafeteria style, long lines more
