Max & Erma's Restaurant

My father and I visited Dayton this past weekend so that I could run my second marathon. We were looking for a good place to grab a hearty meal after the race in the morning. The line at most of the restaurants was out the door, so we settled on Max & Erma's. Being from California and New York, neither of us had ever heard of Max & Erma's, which is a chain of restaurants serving American-style food, centered mostly in the midwest area. The menu itself reminded us of an Applebee's menu - lots of burgers and sandwiches. My dad had a cheeseburger and I had a reuben sandwich. Both of these were great! My dad reported that the burger was cooked just right, with lots of cheese on it. My reuben was tasty and piled high with corn beef. In fact, it was enough that I wasn't even able to finish. The prices are reasonable, as one would expect from a casual dining restaurant such as this one. The service was standard, too. Nothing spectacular, but we didn't feel neglected either. My mom was visiting from California so we wanted to take her someplace different. We decided on Max and Erma's, we had heard from friends that it was pretty good so we gave it a shot. I got a burger, my hubby got a HUGE chicken sandwich and my mom got a steak. All three entrées were pretty good. We had awesome service in the clean, fun setting. We also got to sample their tortilla soup. What a great concept. Our server brought out three little ramekins of the soup for us to sample. It was a really nice touch. Often times you just want to taste something rather than spending a bunch of money on the whole entrée. So it was really nice to just get a sample. And yes, it was pretty good. But it was too hot outside for a big bowl of spicy soup. They also have fresh baked cookies that are supposed to be awesome. We didn't try them, we are saving it for next time. One other great thing, since it was our first time visiting, the manager came over, introduced himself and gave us a coupon for $5 off our next visit. Great bonus! more
