Editorial review from Citysearch 8/8/2013

I had the worst service from the front desk here and have painfully decided after years of loyalty to stop bringing my babies here. You can get a good vet all over the city but a whole package- good vet and good front desk and tech customer service- is not what you'll find here. Even most other good reviews of this place say the same- good vet bad receptionist.... funny enough, when I told my neighbor what happened, he said that was the reason he stopped going to Dr. Martin too! I wonder how many clients he has lost because of those people? Word of advice, if you want people to keep bringing their beloved pets to you, GET RID OF THOSE RUDE NEGATIVE WOMEN IN THE OFFICE!!!!! more

The good reviews are spot on. 7/18/2011

So I came to this vet when I got my bulldog as EVERYONE states that Dr Young is THE doc to go for bulldogs. Anyway...yes his bedside manner IS a bit lacking...lol AND i had the same experience where he is talking to you and he is petting the dog...but the dog squishes its eyes because its more like whack whack whack...ha ha.. He reminds me of that aunt that loves you so much she just HAS to squeez your cheeks when your young. He is very knowledgable and does wish to do what is best for your dog AND you. IE what can you afford, etc etc. I am lucky that I can usually go the xtra mile for my pets, but they do not judge you if you cannot. I like that. Anyway, he comes off a bit gruff, but dont be afraid to ask questions...he will tak ethe time to answer any and all your questions..you may just have to pipe up to make sure he realizes you DO have questions. \r \r Dr martin, is gentler with his approach. He is very personable and also has the attitude of what is best for my patient and its human. :D \r \r Both Doctors will take all the time you need and answer all your questions. \r \r The staff is ok. They seem friendly. I dont know if this Kat person is still there as I have never seen someone of the description. \r \r Lastly...when I saw the practice i was...YIKES!! Its in a non sophisticate part of town..and the office is a little run down. But with that said...So far in SA this is the BEST care i have recieved. And I would reccommend this vet( trust me I have gone to a few others in alamo heights, the SS..that I would NOT rec..) more

Wow. Nope. 9/7/2010

I am a new customer and picture it. I get there and the receptionist is playing with her cell phone. Ok, now after being ignored, her phone line rings....ok so after 15 mins or so I get to go into a room. And the whole time I'm there I have to hear these women talk HORRIBLY about one of their co-worker. Then I get see a nice vet tech kinda elderly and she is very helpful. Before I leave I tried asking a question to a red headed vet tech WHO WAS RUDE. The dr's I are great...but as far as me recommending anyone to that soap show. Nope! I don't think I will go back there. Because Number one not sympathetic, the red head just was cursing and on her phone, and the receptionist please learn some customer service. more

Affordable Caring Vets. 5/18/2010

I took my 5 month old puppy here on a Friday because she was showing signs of parvo. My regular vet could not get her in, and after searching through several reviews, I decided not to go to the place he'd recommended (Angel of Mercy), and to try here instead. I am so glad I did. I did not have any contact with any of the vet techs, (other than them peeking in the room to get a glimpse of my puppy,) so I cannot comment on this Kat person, but the front desk girl (Crystal?) was very friendly. We saw Dr. Young, and after briefly looking at my dog, the first thing he said was it was going to cost me about $800 to hospitalize her. I knew she had parvo, and had seen reviews from other vets stating $1600 to $1800 and up, so I was pleased to see he was so much lower than them, but his delivery of the amount wasn't the best, (but then he's a vet, not a salesman.) Still $800 was more than I had, and unlike the majority of Americans, I don't use credit cards. I discussed this with him, and although it was against his recommendation, he offered me the option to take care of her myself. He gave her some injections, and provided me with medications to give her at home for around $200. I went home with a bag of meds and cared for my puppy over the weekend, which surprisingly, she made it through (I have heard really bad prognosis for parvo puppies). I think I did an excellent job caring for her (better than any vet tech would have,) but by Tuesday I felt that she was getting too dehydrated and really needed IV treatment. I took her back to Dr. Young, trying to get as much money together as I could just in case hospitalization was necessary. On our second visit, everyone in the office was very friendly and happy to see my dog was hanging in there. Dr. Young knew I was trying to avoid hospitalization, (although that is always the recommendation with parvo,) so this time he gave my dog the subcutaneous injections to hydrate her, showed me how to do them, and sent me home with everything I needed to do them at home. His bedside manner is a little lacking, (he's a little rough, and he was patting my very weak little dog as he was talking, and her legs were sliding out from under her and giving out), but of course, I don't think anyone would be as gentle as we are with our own pets. Even so, he was very patient and informative. I do not feel that it is just about the money with them, as I have with other vets. Other places have the mentality that either you have the money to pay them, you let your dog die, or pay to put them to sleep. Not all pet owners have an endless amount of money to shell out when things go wrong, and I understand that not all things could be treated at home, but I sincerely appreciate them giving my dog a chance at life. Pros: knowledgable, caring, friendly Cons: not the gentlest guy, office could use a little updating more

To the Doctors defense 4/15/2010

I read all these reviews because I worked for Dr. Martin and Dr. Young for a year. They are incredibly nice doctors that taught me a lot and I will forever be grateful for that. With the mixed reviews I will say if you take your pets there the doctors will not try to ""sell"" you into anything. They don't beat around the bush either, they care about the animals very much. The reviews are correct though about Kat. She is one of the reasons I quit working there. I've been out of high school for almost 20 years, no need to revert back to that childish behavior. I built strong relationships with many clients and we still keep in touch and from what I hear it hasn't changed much. If I were you I would still go to this vet for the doctor care but ask for a different vet tech other than Kat to help you. She's knowledgeable but has no people skills. Pros: Dr. Martin and Dr. Young Cons: you'll see more

Are you kidding me? 2/20/2009

I would not recommend this place only because they have a vet tech working there named Kat who acts as if she knows what she is talking about but instead is an idiot. The new receptionist acts like the life has been sucked out of her. Star is very nice and caring but that's about it. The place is becoming way over priced and not enough quality to go with it. It's sad because I have been going there for years but the fact that the doctors will not take responsibility for their clinic and fire kat that absolutely does not belong there makes me question their value and care about their clients. The doctors are really ok but no one else there is worth anything. I am sorry that might sound cruel but it's the truth. Pros: Good doctors Cons: Everyone else that works there more

what a headache 1/28/2009

would NOT recommend this place. I paid $97.00 for an x-ray, however I have no right to a copy? Kat tried to tell me there was no way to duplicate an x-ray. Hello, it's 2009,, where have you been? Yes there is a state law that the vet must keep the records for 5 years,, but the rest of the law states..\r ""(c) Upon the request of the client or his/her authorized representative, the veterinarian shall furnish a copy of the patient records, including a copy of any radiographs requested, within 15 business days of the request, unless a longer period is reasonably required to duplicate the records. The veterinarian may charge a reasonable fee for this service, including actual costs for mailing, shipping or delivery. A veterinarian may not refuse a request for copies because payment in full for veterinary care has not been received from the client. ""\r So now that I have clarified the law, the doctor says I can pick up a copy. Huummmm, Kat,, guess someone invented an x-ray duplicator today. Pros: the doctor is decent & seems to be good Cons: Kat is a headache more

Great Affordable Vet care, Best doctors in san antonio 4/22/2008

I too have been a long time client with this vet and I love them. I have never had any problems there but I am very excited that cristy took over working up front. She always has a smile on her face and is so pleasant. I believe all the techs are very experienced and know what my pets need but I do agree with the other person about Kat appearing to be rude and inconsiderate. I have dealt with all the techs there before and they are all quite good at their job. It's just too bad that she comes across the way she does. Hopefully Dr. Young and Dr. Martin can speak with her about this and correct her behavior towards others. Thank you all for everything you do and god bless. Pros: great doctors, great techs, great receptionist Cons: n/a more

Great Doctors and Great Vet Techs!! 4/14/2008

The Dr's and the vets techs are great!! Ive been a long time client of both dr.martin and dr.young. Their vet techs: Theresa,Kat and Starr have always been very friendly and have always treated all of my pets as if they were their own.Its great to have a pet care facility such as theirs that employs such great doctors and vet techs! Pros: Great Doctors and Great Vet techs! more

Overall the best vet in town. Great doctors, receptionist and great prices. 3/5/2008

This animal hospital was a wonderful first impression. The front office young lady got me right in when I called and was more polite and caring about my feelings and my dogs needs then all the other clinics I have gone to in the past. My puppy saw Dr. Martin and he did a wonderful job and I am so thankful for his help. I had a sick puppy and he did a wonderful job and their prices are very reasonable compared to many others around town. The only downfall to this clinic and the reason I did not give it a 5 star is because of my experience with the vet tech named kat. She was rude, her smile was fake and acted like she could care less about the how I felt at the moment. She seemed to me like someone who acts like they hate their job and can't wait to go home. Thank you to everyone else that helped me that day and even though part of it was a bad experience I will continue to take my loved ones there, I'll just ask for a different tech. Pros: Price, Doctors, front office receptionist Cons: The red headed vet tech. more
