Best

i can't say enough about this place, i have never had more tender chicken kababs in my life. the entertainment was fabulous. smoked a hookah here and it was awesome. great food...

Worst

I went here with some friends for my birthday last year. Disappointed by the lack of alcohol, all they had was wine. Food was blah, some was ok and some of it was not. We waite...

awful experience 3/24/2008

From the moment we sat down we were left with no options. We came with a group of 5 unaware there no options. When we asked for a menu, the waitress replied, ""We just bring out the food."" We had no options on what we wanted to eat. They said there would be a bellydancer at 9pm but we were there until 10pm and there was no bellydancer.... after the appetizers, we asked for the bill because we didn't know how much we would be charged or what type of foods we were going to get they said, ""You'll be losing money."" We told them to charge us for what we ordered and let us go. Eventually, after 20 minutes of asking for the bill we were allowed to leave....... I would never go there again. I don't think it's realistic to not know what you're going to get to eat..... Plus, the bellydancing is all a scam. There was no bellydancer. more

Great Hangout! 9/25/2007

After searching for good hookah in New York, this seemed like a good bet. My friends and I weren't disappointed! The tobacco was top-notch, and the two appetizers we ordered (stuffed grape leaves and cheese turnovers) were devoured in minutes. I loved the atmosphere and the music. The one thing that all of us noticed was somewhat poor service. Perhaps we just caught the waitress on an off-night, but once we had our hookah, no one came by to check on us for about an hour and we had to flag someone down to ask for a change of coals. Once we asked, it took another 10 minutes for someone to come do it! My friend and I ordered our appetizers at the same time and her stuffed grape leaves were brought and eaten... while I had to sit and wait an ADDITIONAL 20 minutes after they were gone before my turnovers arrived. We had to again flag someone down to bring our check. The wait-staff was pleasant, just not very attentive. Otherwise and very fun and relaxing evening. Pros: Very reasonable hookah price, great ambience Cons: Far from subway, wait-staff not very attentive more

Great Middle Eastern food! 9/18/2007

This is a great place to meet up with friends or go on a date on. The food is soooo good!!! I loved the hummus, babaganoush, etc. platter. Come hungry because despite the fact that they're small servings they are filling. We went on a Saturday evening and there was live entertainment so that was fun. I would definitely recommend. Pros: Lots of food, good service, intimate atmosphere, live entertainment, prixe fix Cons: should call ahead if it gets crowded, group dining probably not ideal since it's small more

Amazing food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8/15/2007

i can't say enough about this place, i have never had more tender chicken kababs in my life. the entertainment was fabulous. smoked a hookah here and it was awesome. great food, price fixe menu at $35 pp but totally worth it. Pros: Food, Ambience, Entertainment. Cons: a little cramped more

Eh...pretty mediocre 7/19/2007

I decided to have my 23rd birthday at this restaurant and I couldn't have been more dissapointed and embarrassed in front of my guests for picking such an awful place. Pros: If you want to waste your money and time, this place is great for that! Cons: If you want a pleasant memorable experience, don't go here. more

Wonderful experience.. 11/14/2006

The place is a bit small but has great decor with rich arabian colors. Cozy which is perfect for a date. There's not actual menu. The chefs will make the same courses for everyone at a fixed price $35. Drinks are not included. The different courses are small dishes to share of many ecletic foods: appetizers, dips, desserts, etc. On saturdays they have a belly dancer show which was nice and entertaining. The seats are on the low side a bit hard trying to eat your food but its is over all a very nice place to visit. The waiters are friendly as well. more

Great for groups 11/5/2006

I planned a surprise bachelorette party for this past weekend and it ended up being a great choice. An incredible amount of delicious food for the $40 prix fix. Vegetarians were more than well covered too! We kept the wine coming and paid $70 a head (including covering the guest of honor). They were very accommodating in terms of helping stage the surprise. Any review complaining about the loud music must be referring to the 20 minutes or so between 2 of the courses where the music starts blaring and the belly dancer appears... hardly a nuisance and a nice add! I wouldn't recommend the downstairs for anyone going without a group... the couples amongst the two big groups downstairs seemed a bit lost and uncomfortable. Pros: Great for groups and lingering dining Cons: Don't go if you're in a rush! more

avoid weekend 7/26/2006

We came on a Saturday evening, the seats are very uncomfortable, we sat far from each other, the music very loud and it was difficult to talk. We had a predeterminented menu (whats usual on Saturdays) and the food was pretty good. The belly-dancer was average. The prices more than good, very expensive!! We payd $ 80 each. Dont't go on Saturday evening and ask for the prices!! more

Possibly the best date place in town 5/23/2006

Mamlouk is as good as it gets. Arrive hungry (actually starved) because the amount of delicious food they bring is almost overwhelming. You will surely leave full and satisfied. It's got a very sexy atmosphere - ideal for a second or third date. The wine list could use some expansion. Be sure to let them know ahead of time if you have any vegetarians in your party. It's also perfect for groups. If you're into Middle Eastern food, this is the creme de la creme. Pros: Delicious Food, Friendly Service Cons: Short Wine List more

Great Food! 1/28/2006

We had a wonderful time at Mamlouk. We were there for the second seating (at 9:00) and the belly dancer was great. The food was amazing, and it just kept coming...one delicious dish after another. The wait staff were friendly, quick, and efficient...we got our drinks within minutes of ordering them. The best part may have been the apple tabacco and hookah pipe at the end...so fun. Definitly worth the $20. We had a bunch of drinks, coffee, tea, and the hookah pipe, and each couple ended up paying about $150...not bad for such a big dinner and such a great experience. Pros: amazing food, fast service, cool ambiance Cons: tiny tables, music a bit loud more

would never go here again 1/28/2006

We did the 9pm seating (they only have a 7pm and 9pm seating) and while we sat down right away, ti was 10pm before we had any food. The service was abominable; our waiter barely paid any attention to us, never filled our water, and overall couldnt have been more rude. He basically threw our food on the table and almmed our bottle of wine down without even asking us if we wanted to try it. We were also a party of 7, so they automatically added the tip in, making the meal evn worse of an experience. The food was tasty, but was completely overshadowed by a truly bad dining experience. more

User review by slowburn71 9/18/2005

the food was plentiful and good, the service waned towards the end, beware of the mint tea, while good... they are a bit sneaky since they don't tell you its not included in the price fix, so we got charged an extra $12. You'd think price fix menu means everything is included! Cheapest bottle of wine is $22 (merlot). Overall recommended. Pros: Food Cons: Tea Cost, Dark more

Great if you're tipsy 3/29/2005

I read the reviews on citysearch before dining here. The food is not large and I could have had a few slices of pizza after I left. If you are with someone you are both served little dishes at the same time which you share, not your own dishes. Might not work out well with vegetarians, though informed in advance, that does not seem to matter. There were only two groups in the restaurant at the time. I watched the other group receive special treatment and much more food since they seemed to speak their own language. The bathroom is pretty nice considering the location. The ambience was too dark too feel comfortable. The music was middle eastern and more authentic. more

Mmmmm Mm! 3/26/2005

I have never even LIKED sea bass before this dinner, and it was absolutely my favorite thing in the meal. Fresh veggies, all sorts of middle eastern spreads, cheese and falafel, soup, fish, rice, root vegetables, a rice medley, some spinach thing, lamb kebabs, cheese baclava... soooo much fooood, and all of it delicious. Slow service, but when you're hanging around with groups of 10 or 20, who really notices? Pros: fresh ingredients, fun decor, great for parties Cons: slow service, music too loud more

Man, oh man 3/8/2005

I'm ambivalent about this place. First, the food was amazing. Go there not having eaten for hours, because your stomach will be sore by the end of the adventure/ordeal. Have a couple hours to spare with some friends. Now to the bad parts: for us, it was more like an ordeal. The music was too loud to sustain conversation and our waiter was not polite and SLOW. The belly-dancer that came out on that Saturday night was a pleasant surprise, but the bill came to over $50 a head (from each of 6 of us), albeit with red wine and hookah. But the hookah took forever to arrive and I wanted to start serving myself while staring at dessert waiting on a nearby tray for 20mins. I think the idea was to give us time since we were so full, but over 2 hours in one place is excessive. Pros: food, environment Cons: sub-par service, loud music more

Great deal, great time, great all around 10/8/2004

Went to Mamlouk for the first time last nite at the recommendation of my boyfriend who had been there before. In a city full of plentiful restaurant offerings, Mamlouk is one of the great finds. We took out of town friends there for dinner who like us, are serious foodies, and everyone was so impressed. The prix fixe menu of $35 is such an amazing value for the amount (go hungry! we rolled outta there) and the quality of the food you get. If you're a foodie and you are looking for a unique dining experience, head to Mamlouk. Just make sure to go hungry! You'll come out stuffed but happily so. Pros: great value, delicious dishes, unique experience more

Great dining experience 4/25/2004

I just had a birthday dinner here and we all had a wonderful time--the ambiance was sexy and cozy and the food was delicious! We enjoyed the wines we chose (just don't expect a lot of choices) and did I mention the food? Just don't fill up on the first few courses...the best is yet to come. The cheese puffs, falafel, and various dip-type items (hummus, etc) were tasty, but wait for the sea bass and lamb before you truly pig out. They have 2 seatings (7 and 9 PM--I'd recommend the later seating) and an upstairs and downstairs (which is better and more private). Pros: Good food, great ambiance, good for a group more

Best Middle Eastern Restaurant in NYC! 6/25/2003

Want to have a fabulous dining experience, then try Mamlouk. Price fixed at $30.00 per person is a Bargain for this excellent food, great service and middle eastern atmosphere. You will leave satisfied and wanting to return with more friends, but make sure you reserve as their are only 2 seatings per night. For those who like beer they serve amazing Maroccan Beer from Casablanca, for the wine lovers you will find excellent Lebanese wines on the menu as well. Enjoy! Pros: Food, Price, service Cons: space more

Good for Groups 6/9/2003

We return to this place all the time (10+ of us). The food is excellent, the atmosphere great. Service could improve, especially when there are several groups at the same time. But we've always had pretty good experiences here. more

Middle East Parked in Manhattan 5/17/2003

What a lucky find! I was wandering the East Village with a friend and craved authentic Middle Eatern food. Then we spotted Mamlouk. Don't be fooded by it's size and discreet location. This restaurant actually serves really fresh, tasty, piping hot Middle Eastern food. For 30 bucks we were served eight courses. The food just kept on coming! It was delicious! Great atmosphere. Great for dates or small groups. Attractive waitstaff. Pros: atmosphere, authentic, good value Cons: dark, low tables, small wine list more
