Great upstairs view but everything else is just all right. 4/26/2010

Maggie Mae's was the first bar my sisters wanted to visit when they came for SXSW. Came to Maggie Mae's at around 11 or 12 and we were feeling it. The rooftop was definitely cool, and we were yelling at people in the street below and got asked to be quiet. Please it's sixth street. Anyway it is a nice to get some fresh air while drinking! There were 2 bars upstairs and neither were crowded, so that was awesome. The band we saw was really good, but the stage is higher than back part of the room, so the crowd was blocking my view :(. I enjoyed it for sure, but it wasn't the best bar or venue in Austin by a longshot. Nothing too too special, but nice to get away during SXSW! Pros: The roof. Cons: The bouncers are creepy. more

not the best 5/29/2009

I like the atmosphere and the upstairs deck at Mae's but this place isn't one of my favorites. The live music downstairs is horrible and it takes forever to get a drink. On the weekends a domestic canned beer is $4 (lame) but the staff is always nice. This bar is a good place to head to after you're already drunk. Pros: outdoor area Cons: music, prices more

A Gem on 6th 5/19/2009

Just did the tour of 6th and this place was the highlight of the night. Friendly bartender, decent prices (unlike Buffalo Billiards and Nunos), great atmosphere. My brother summed it up best for the crowd, "like nerds meet the women of Baywatch." Pros: atmosphere, prices Cons: none to speak of more

Great afternoon, free wi-fi, cool breeze 5/8/2008

Recommendation for an afternoon on 6th St, in general, and Maggie Mae's in particular: Good little happy hour, currently $2 for wells and $2 for beer, but ck w/ the bartender; and they have a free WI-FI (after all, this IS Austin). It's a cool open air patio, w/ a full bar and a good breeze. more

Good music, cool atmosphere 9/15/2006

I went here on a Friday night and it was packed! The beer wasn't too expensive for 6th St. and they had a really good guitarist playing some Hendrix. I like the way they divide the bar up. I will definitely be coming back. more

Classic Austin 3/10/2005

This used to be the best bar in town in the heyday of UT. It's still pretty popular, but the crowd has gotten older and the music isn't quite as good. Lots of out of towners come here, so if you're looking to meet one of them, this is your spot. Live music on weekends. more

Review 5/30/2004

I love, love, love this bar. While walking down 6th street my boyfriend and I stumbles upon Maggie Mae's and it was very enjoyable. The waitstaff is excellent - very friendly. It also has the quality of being three bars in one. In a quiet upstairs nook we played pool, then checked out the Beatles cover band playing in the side room, and finally strolled upstairs to the roof to sit and drink. Plus we got in early enough to not have a cover charge - definate plus. If you stumble across Maggie Mae's like me definetly go in, you will not be sorry. Pros: Friendly Wait Staff more

NEW AND IMPROVED 2/6/2003

Maggie Mae's has cleaned up the place a lot since last year. They are re-furbishing the loft area and have started booking decent bands. Bar staff is great and friendly and really made me feel right at home. I will be back, soon. Pros: cheap pricing, great staff, best view Cons: small bathrooms more

  • In Short
This Austin institution has a split personality. On one hand, you have the pub, with its large selection of draft beers. On the other hand, you have four distinct bar areas that accommodate a variety of crowds. Regardless of particular interests, this is a quintessential place to start out the night on famed Sixth Street. Expect to see a lot of college students and tourists soaking up the suds and the Southern-fried rock.
