Best

Madison's has catered two events for my organization, one large (500 people) and one small (75 people). I did a survey after the large event and 99% of the people responded ""love...

Worst

American fare and a bit pricey for what you get. Also from observation it seems if you know the barkeep then maybe you get a good pour. It's got a great location, a nice pool tab...

It was ok. 5/9/2011

Yes, the ruben was good, but the meat was dry and the server got our salad order wrong, and we had to pay more. Te big thing 3was ordering fruit instead of fries.. the fruit was at room temperature!!! more

Would NOT recommend 3/28/2011

I booked a party with Madisons Grill and have to say at first I was very excited to have my gathering at this location. Had made all of the plans about 2 months in advance, and found out 3 days before the party that THEY double booked their venue, and I had to move my party. They did take the step to find me another place, but was not what I had planned on. I paid for a dance floor and did not have one at the new location. They never offered to take any type of discount off of my price which was very high already. Instead they threw in some extra food, which consisted of fruit and bread with dip. The buffet style dinner was not all that great either. Greenbeans were hard and not cooked, the pesto cream sauce was like water. Toward the end of the party I heard a couple of my guest tell the waitstaff as they were taking their drinks from under them that they were not done yet. Felt very rushed to be out of this so called venue (furniture show room) by the staff. more

amazing caterer 10/5/2010

Madison's has catered two events for my organization, one large (500 people) and one small (75 people). I did a survey after the large event and 99% of the people responded ""loved it!"" about the food - no kidding. Madison's uses local food, stays within budget and gives unbelievable service. I know I can call them for any event and be confident that my guests will by happy. They're spectacular. more

Fabulous Event Center 9/13/2010

I have been a fan of Madison's Grill for a while, what, with their fabulous bottomless mimosas on the weekend and their $2 dollar Tuesday's, how could one say no? I love their outdoor patio to lounge with a group of friends and their staff is over the top nice and ready to serve. I recently attended the Bikestravaganza event at Madison's. It was a celebration of the fabulous Elly Blue and crew's bike tour. The event was held in Madison's event room, which I never even knew existed, as it is separate from the restaurant. The venue is huge, with a full bar, projector and large space for mass people to gather. As a portland native I am familiar with what restaurant venues have to offer, it is rare to find a awesome restaurant who does everything from restaurant service to catering to hosting large parties. Well, I found the spot... Madison's rocks, I will be no stranger to this corner gem in SE PDX. more

Hit n Miss - Sometimes Good, and then... 8/16/2010

American fare and a bit pricey for what you get. Also from observation it seems if you know the barkeep then maybe you get a good pour. It's got a great location, a nice pool table upstairs, but the value proposition seems a little upside down. The quality and the quantity does not demand the pricing they ask up and down the menu. And the wait staff can be just as up and down, some attentive, some not so much. more

Not Recommended 7/16/2010

I am a food critic and very particular about the food that I consume. We were going to lunch the other day (BTW...I eat out EVERYDAY) and was planning to take a friend to East Burn and sit in the great patio area they have. Unfortunately, this establishment is closed on Monday for lunch. So, we took off from there and decided to find a place we had never eaten before on an impromptu basis (which is the best sometimes!). In this case, not at all. I had never even heard of Madison's but the building looked extravagant and the parking lot was full (turns out that most were associated with the office building next door). We were greeted right away and have to admit that the service was OK. However, I asked the waitress her opinion on some of the menu items and her comment was ""everything is good here"". I decided to get one of the ""hand formed"" burgers which she said was very high quality meat. For $10 you would expect a great bistro burger. Ordered it medium and when it arrived it was like shoe leather. I stomached a couple of bites and then the waitress checked back with us. I expressed my discontent with the quality and all I received was an apology. I then stated, ""well, guess I will just get a box and carry the rest home to my dog"". Then, when we were ready to check out, the manager came over and asked if he could take the bill. I said, ""Yes, no problem. But I did want to let you know that the chef should realize when you order a medium burger it should be pink in the middle and not charred to shoe leather consistency"". He said, ""Absolutely, I will let him know right away"". I heard him chastising the cook but that is the last contact I had with him. No offer to recook the burger nor any other type of compensation. Needless to say, I will never go back to Madison's nor will I recommend it. With the economy the way it is, wouldn't you try and retain as many repeat customers as possible? This is very bad business. I hope that the owner reads these comments and takes my post to heart. Not good customer focus at all. more

Good experience all around 5/3/2009

Went here in search of a gigantic hamburger known as the ""Ridiculous Burger"", a one pound beef patty stuffed with prosciutto, salami, blue cheese and topped with three kinds of cheese, bacon, mushrooms, peppers, onions, DELICIOUS tomato aioli, and a portabella mushroom. Boy did it deliver. Forgot to ask what kind of beef they used but it was hand formed and delicious. Carries a hefty $17 price tag but could easily feed two. The fries are perfect (for my taste at least) thick, golden and very crispy. The service was solid, greeted right away and well taken care of. The only complaint I had was that they don't serve appetizers during brunch hours, yeah kinda lame. But overall, I'd recommend this for burgers and fries, not sure about the entrees but I plan on trying them when I go back. Pros: Top notch burgers and fries, good service Cons: No appetizers during lunch? more

Good brunch 1/23/2009

I come here quite often for brunch with my son. They have a good kids menu, and the menu has lots of variety. Service has always been good, and the food is always delicious. It seems like in Portland there aren't a whole lot of kid friendly restaurants, so it's nice to find one that is. more

Best food and atmosphere! 12/19/2008

I felt compelled to write a review to let everyone know how much I love this place. The food is amazing and the staff makes you feel so comfortable when you get there. And the owner Steve will come over and talk with you, even steal a fry off your plate! Joking, it's a great place and they just improved their menu, try the blackened salmon burger or the spaghetti and meatballs! Pros: Quality food for once more

best brunch- have to try the hashbrowns 9/18/2008

I took my husband for brunch and there is a big variety, we loved it , price was great and service was fast , there were a few people there at the tail end of brunch and people outside too. I do think this place is underrated because each plate looks so good and you can figure out what you will want to order the next time you go, so brunch was successful! We took my mom for lunch (she lives on coast) the following week she loved lunch too. I had 1/2 of buffalo burger and 1/2 shrimp po'boy (made husband 1/2 with me) I would say we will be going back a few more times until we've had everything on the menu . we will try dinner soon too. I have seen this place all the time im glad we tried it! it will be one of our fav places, so far the hashbrowns are sooo good , french fries the good comfort kind and shrimp po'boys are crunchy juicy shrimp , best pancakes! Pros: price/ food/service/ the staff are very friendly Cons: lot should be bigger but parking ok more

Like a lump in my gut 8/28/2008

I'd never been there, and I won't be going back- the food was awful. A decent beer selection is the only redeeming value. I had the Red White & Blue lasagna- veggies, marinara, ricotta, alfredo, and blue cheese, supposedly. I saw a single slice of mushroom, couldn't see or taste the alfredo or blue cheese. I tasted ricotta once. The garlic bread was tasty, but what I was supposed to do with a pile of dry spinach on the plate, I don't know. I ate less than half of the portion and felt *oof* full but unsatisfied. I didn't even want a glass of wine before bed. My husband had the BBQ brisket, which was no better. The BBQ sauce wasn't BBQ, the brisket was tough, and the potatoes were clumpy. The buffalo wings were okay- good flavor, but not buffalo wing flavor or seasonings, and not spicy. The service was good, the beer selection was respectable, but I can get that elsewhere with much better food. more

Family friendly and delicious 1/9/2008

I love Madison's Grill. My husband and I eat there regularly. The wait staff has always been friendly and attentive, even when we've had groups of 15 or more. The menu is extensive and there's something for everyone, even the vegetarians. We love the Blackened Ahi and the halibut filets, and the bento is always a great choice, and my son insists I mention the Bacon and Bleu Cheeseburger! When we recently held my husband's birthday party upstairs, the catered buffet was wonderful and the servers made sure everyone was happy and had a great time. Kudos to Steve and everyone at Madison's Grill. Pros: Parking, Catering, the Deck! Cons: Smoking allowed on the deck more

late night happy hour food tasteless and boring 11/9/2007

good beer selection, but the happy hour menu app's are typical, uninspired and tasteless. Especially the chicken quesadilla - tasteless chicken and way too much cheese, no flavor. The 'homemade' salsa that came with it was as tasteless as the quesadilla, and was dried out old cubed tomato and maybe 1 onion cube. We also got hard to F up nachos, but they also sucked, flavor was dominated by canned black olive taste... Pros: service, clean and comfortable Cons: kinda like TGIFriday's inside, food was tastless and forgettable (I'm trying anyway) more

Great food; relaxed atmosphere 8/23/2007

I was turned on to Madison's by a friend and have quickly become a loyal fan. I can see why they have regulars who can't stop coming back for more! I have never had a meal there that I haven't liked, and I eat there quite regularly! The portions are large, the food is comforting and there is an array of choices--I like that they have classic favorites, but also focus on cuisine for the health-conscious. Great beer selections, too, with more than 16 microbrews on tap! They have one of the longest happy hours in town that I've come across... Pros: Friendly, engaging staff; large portions, delicious food, outdoor patio Cons: NONE! more

best salmon in town! 7/6/2007

i went to madisons on friday night (6-29) with my girlfriend. i ordered the salmon special and she got the north west salad, my salmon was cooked perfect most places i go to if i get fish its always dry and burned but this one was very juicy with out being undercooked and had great tast! we had such a good time that i took my parents back that sunday for my dads birthday the food we got on sunday was just as good then(on a slow day) as friday! i recomend going to madisons and defintly ask about there specials, i had a very good experence with them. more

Decent Bloody Mary but Bad Food. 6/18/2007

I have been here before and had a good time, but I didnt remember the food being so terrible. My girlfriend ordered the roasted veggie wrap, and instead of getting roasted veggies she got some cold pickled carrots, onions, and asparagus wrapped in a cold flour tortilla. The waitress was kind enough to get us something else, when we complained but the second item wasnt much better. I also got the veggie nachos but they were a big plate of stale nachos with burnt cheese and a few beans. The Proud Mary, their signature bloody mary is awesome but pretty spendy at 6 bucks and has very little alcohol in it. Im not sure what happened, maybe they got a new cook or something. more

Stability in the repetoire 5/5/2007

Every now and then, I get a hankering for something straight-forward, dependable, and flexible. That's Madison's-- most anyone I know can find something to eat, they're open for dinner later in the evening but don't have an overt bar crowd. Potato soup is delicious and some high quality french fries (steak fry style). Sitting outside is great in warm weather-- sitting upstairs and playing a game of pool is nice and can be intimate (esp during the week). Weekend brunch is great!! Servers have been very friendly. more

Restaurant recommended 11/1/2006

I seem to be finding some good spots lately. This place has the character you would expect in the Hawthorne district. Not much of a view, but the pub grub is good and the beer is excellent. Pros: value, service, pub grub Cons: nothing fancy/upscale, just down to earth more

Owner and staff are wonderful! 5/23/2006

I recently had a 60th birthday event here for 90 people. Steve, the owner, was great to work with. We had a no-host bar, managed by Sam and Kelli. They kept things running smooth, attended to any requests, and were very friendly. People at the event kept raving to me about the room setup, the food, and the decorations in the banquet room (set up for the Saturday dinner theater right now). Highly recommend this place for events, and for catering. We'll definately be back to try their regular menus as well. more

Our most favorite restaurant in SE Portland 1/26/2006

We've been going to Madison's since we moved to SE Portland five years ago, and it's been our favorite place to eat by far!! The servers are very friendly, and always take good care of us. We go there at least twice a week, and my absolute favorite is their famous ""Fish & Chips"". They also make killer ""Bloody Mary"". Their brunch is also great. My kids love the ""Banana Pancake with Walnuts and Caramel Sauce"", and my husband is crazy about the ""Crab Cake Benedict"". We love Madison's and it is highly recommended!!!! Pros: Group dining, Kid friendly, Huge parking space more
