Poor Service and Poor Attitude 11/24/2008

I've been here 3 times, but yesterday's visit will be my last. The service, in short, was probably the worst I've experienced. They have great burgers (why I went for lunch yesterday), but the bar service was pretty appalling. My boyfriend, for reasons only known to the kitchen staff, was served his side dish first. Then, 10 minutes later, he received his entree and I was given something that I didn't order. Instead of getting the kitchen to fire up the correct dish quickly (I used to be a chef, so know this is possible), I had to wait another 30 MINUTES while the bartender/waitress carefully avoided us. Hoping to salvage the meal, I then asked for my entree to go. Imagine our surprise when, 10 minutes after my boyfriend had finished his entire meal (why have his lunch ruined?), my order came back, WRONG AGAIN. I told the bartender/waitress that I would not be taking my meal with me or paying for it (no apologies coming from them). The only time the service was attentive was when I reached for my credit card. Surprisingly, they actually charged me for his meal. more

Great Staff, Great Food...What more could you ask for? 10/22/2008

I had dinner with a few friends at Madaleine Mae's last week and it was a terrific experience. Working in the restaurant industry I find it very difficult to get good service ( maybe I am a little picky) but at Madaleine Mae's everyone from the busboy to the manager is extremely pleasant. The servers really focus on fast, friendly service. The food was also excellent, I had a pork chop with squash and an asian pear sauce on top which was delicious. Also they now have new daily specials which looked great. I also tried one of their rhum cures, which are supposed to cure different ailments, and I definitely felt better after drinking it. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this place and I think you will also..... Pros: Great Food, Great Service, Great Bar more

Slipping Fast 8/16/2008

Every visit since they opened has only gotten worse. At the beginning they correctly tweaked the menu until they got it right, then for some unknown reason removed many of the better items and didn't replace them, i.e., P.E.I. muscles appetizer, cold cucumber soup, redfish entre, several different salads, among others. The menu now is very limiting, yet as diverse as a Greek diner with no ability to tie an entire dinner together. But hey, I guess some people like having a Southern appetizer, Southwestern entre and a French dessert all in a single meal. Speaking of which, the desserts used to be a standout, but now are too inconsistent, even with the less complicated ones. Also, shrimp gumbo should have more than one shrimp in it. And what happened to little things like starting everyone off with cornbread? Thankfully, the service has remained consistent and very good, including the front of the house, wait staff and bar staff. They have diverse beer and liquor offerings and can pour a decent drink, which you will need to get over the troubling state of what was once a welcome addition to the Upper West, even it was only for a brief period of time. Pros: Staff, attentive service, decent beer list, good drink pours, nice atmosphere Cons: Very limiting memu, food can be inconsistent, mediocre desserts more

Baby Friendly 7/28/2008

I love this place! I highly recommended especially if you have children. The food is to die for! I have lunch there at least twice a week, and brunch on sundays is a must! The service is excellent! I always get my order whithin a reasonable time and the restaurant staff are very attentif and friendly. They always help me get my daughter settled at the table and even park the stroller away. And unlike some other UWS restaurtans, they do not make you feel like you should be ashamed for even thinking to bring a child to their restaurant. I recommend this place to all the mommies I hang out with, and they all always come back with their families! more

Not a Thing to Recommend 7/20/2008

Indisputably the worst restaurant on the Upper West Side. This is an establishment that cannot even get a simple Sunday morning breakfast right. We asked for soft omelettes - they were dry and tasteless. We asked for double espresso - both cups were cold. We asked if we could, at no extra charge, substitute whole wheat toast for the muffins - we got some kind of hybrid rye toast - and we were charged for the orders. And the overall tab was expensive. To add insult to injury, despite the early hour and the restaurant being only 1/3 filled, the service was desultory and graceless. Finally, the ultimate indignity: the bathrooms were filthy: discarded towels on the floor, dirty sinks and a stroller parked in front of the lady's room so that my wife had wedge her way in and out. This restaurant is a disaster. Cons: Poorly prepared food, inattentive service, filthy restrooms, absurdly overpriced more
