Mexican Taqueria For Picky Intowners! 12/1/2009

When we first walked into Lupe, all I could think about was our beloved Cuerno, and that big bull in the middle of the room. But we love tacos, and dug in. Straight forward guac, and one with mango/poblano. Very good. Also we shared a queso fundido, good also with a spicy salsa added. We ordered tacos of beef tongue, carnitas, and sauteed shrimp with jalapenos, with a cilantro aioli. Beef tongue was the best, even if I had in the back of my head, the Beef Tongue sandwich at Katz's Deli/NYC. Desert was a goblet filled with Aztec chocolate, piquant with chilies, and toppped with foamed mango cream. Oh Gosh! The Margs were great as well, but the star for me, was the beef tongue tacos. We will be back! Pros: Very Good Tacos & Prices! more

  • In Short
With a critically acclaimed Spanish predecessor (Cuerno) that was a little too advanced for Atlantan’s palettes, chef-owner Riccardo Ullio dialed it back on the conception with Lupe, but lost nothing in the execution. This gourmand-driven Mexican spot delivers a menu that is one part sophistication and one part comfort. To appease the authentic-craving foodies, tacos are traditional, boasting a succulent and well-marbled braised goat and soft beef tongue among the usual steak and fish offerings. Entrees offer enchiladas with rice and beans to the suburban Mexican fan, but raise eyebrows with grilled chicken slathered in a traditional dark mole and served with rice and corn tortillas. Staples like guacamole and margaritas are some of the city’s best, and the setting is as cool as it is comfortable. Ullio might have missed the mark with Cuerno, but Lupe fits like a glove.
