The best Mexican food for the best price. 8/31/2008

My girlfriend and I discovered Los Comales by accident about three months ago, and we have eaten there at least ten times since. We've never had to wait for a table. The service is quick and friendly. The dining area is comfortable, relaxing, and clean. It is the food that keeps us coming back. Most of the time, I have the Echiladas Oaxacenas, topped with a tomatillo sauce which is tangy without being vinegary. The chile con queso is thick and creamy and suffused with garlic. (More than once I've had to order two chile con quesos, because I practically drink the stuff.) Their homemade tortillas are heaven. Normally, I'm a flour man, since I don't like the mealy texture of the corn variety; but the tortillas maiz at Los Comales are like little cakes. I could make a dinner out of their corn tortillas smeared with queso and rolled up. Lately, I've been hooked on their chicken enchiladas with mole. Their mole is fantastic - sweet and faintly smoky. I've tried other menu items - the pork in cascabel, chicken with chorizo and monterrey jack, and a terrific steak dish (the name of which escapes me) - and I have never left without thinking how perfect it seemed to be. Recently, I've been enjoying their desserts. The flan is firm, custardy, and cool. The tres leches cake is a real treat, full of the requisite milk, but firm enough to stand up to the fork without falling apart; and it has the most delightful caramel flavor to it. Yesterday we had chips and queso, two orders of chicken enchilidas and mole with beans, rice, and tortillas, and a shared piece of tres leches cake, all for $23.00. I can't think of a better deal in town for the money. I'm a member of a nearby theatre company, all of whom I brought for a late dinner one night, and they are addicted to Los Comales as well. I refuse to eat Mexican food any place else now. The only flaw I can see is that parking can be a bit of a challenge at times. If you can live with that, then I higly recommend Los Comales. Pros: Food, service, atmosphere, price Cons: parking more

Gross Gross Gross... I think I am gonna be sick 6/13/2008

I went to Los Comales because I read a good review in the Austin American Statesman date May 21, 2008. I totally regret going to Los Comales. I couldn't even finish my food. I had cheese enchiladas, a coworker and chicken enchiladas, and another coworker had fajitas. The prices are low and the service is good but the food is super disgusting! I couldn't even finish it. That is rare for me cuz I can eat! I love Amaya's in Capitol Plaza and I promise to never cheat on Amaya's again! I am so sorry Amaya! Pros: Cool looking restaraurant on the inside Cons: Nasty food! more

If you don't know Spanish beware 11/17/2006

I went in here after I read the reviews. They were true. I felt bad because I didn't know Spanish. The food was good but the service was horrible. Pros: food Cons: parking, service, language barrier more

Best Mexican Food and service 3/11/2006

I come to Austin about 5 times a year for two or three days at a time and I always stop by here more than once. I agree with everything the previous reviewer wrote except for the part of the non-spanish speaking patron. The waitress will go out of there way to provide you with the best service everytime. The food is very authenic and prepared to your liking. Try it once, try it twice, try it evertime you are in Austin. Pros: Food, Waitresses, Food Cons: parking is bad more

great authentic mexican cuisine 2/24/2006

although all the waitresses do not speak english, this restaurant is the best mexican restaurant I have been to in my 4 years in Austin. Don't expect Tex-,ex because that is not what this place is about but do expect great mexican food. Pros: food more

Los Comales 11/28/2004

Los Comales is by far one of los mejores restaurantes en Austin. The food is incredible, the waitresses are prompt and friendly, and the prices are quite reasonable. The spicier the salsa, the more authenticity the restaurant has. Keep the busboy nearby for quick water refills. I don't recommend Los Comales for non-Spanish speakers. It is the only restaurante mexicano that I've been to in which the waitress assumed I wanted to speak Spanish, which I did, and greeted us in Spanish. Pros: Fast service, Authentic Food, Mexican art more
