Beautiful gardens for strolling and inspiration 3/26/2006

Ladew Topiary Gardens are known for their topiary but that's only a small part of the whole. You stroll from one garden to the next and each has a theme (roses, a particular color, water, Asian style, etc.) There is a huge dovecote (or some other kind of big birdhouse) near the beginning and other charming structures along the way. Kids are welcome and they love the secret paths and little ponds with fish and frogs. I've been in early summer, mid summer and late summer and each time is different and lovely. The only time it wasn't so nice was during a long, hard drought but we've had lots of rain these past years so that is no longer a problem. The barn has some old carriages that are interesting to look at and the gift shop is lovely. Box lunches are good but a bit pricey; same goes for the restaurant. Easy to get to and parking is adequate. more

gorgeous gardens 12/19/2005

The Ladew gardens are a beautiful place to spend an afternoon with a date, by yourself, or with family. The gardens are intricate, with lots of little "rooms" to look at. Plan to spend at least a couple of hours here, meandering through the grounds. Picnicing on the grounds is allowed, so bring a basket and a blanket if you're so inclined. It is a really peaceful, breathtaking place to visit. more

go for a walk through the gardens 10/4/2005

Ladew Topiary Gardens is known around the world for its topiary and flower gardens. A self-taught gardener, Ladew created unique "garden rooms" on his own property. You can walk around the gardens or take a tour of his home. It is a nice day trip for the family. Check their website for details of what will be in bloom during your visit. more

Interesting Place 9/28/2005

This is not just a pretty garden. The topiaries are, of course, the main attraction. There are great flower gardens revolving around colors, including a rose garden that is absolutely beautiful when in season. There are many secluded paths and little fountains. I recommend this activity for older tourists who are tired of the Smithsonian. It's a pretty drive to the hilly country north of Baltimore. more

Ladew Topiary Gardens 8/19/2005

Ladew Topiary Gardens consists of about 15 different gardens. The trees and shrubs in the gardens are trimmed into really cool shapes, such as a pack of running dogs. As if the gardens aren’t enough of a reason to visit, Ladew also offers nature trails, picnic areas, and workshops. It also plays host to concerts and other special events. more
