great pasta! 3/13/2008

I've always had a great time at JoPa- it's in my neighborhood. I wouldn't call it fine dining but more a great neighborhood bistro with a comfy bar. I'd recommend the pasta pollo and the salad special any day of the week. My friend always orders the steak with garlic mash and says the wine list is not huge, but good variety and priced well. I appreciate the different beers available myself- Hoegarden and Chimay are my faves. Finally, the Chocolate cup of lava and the sticky toffee pudding are amazing. I've always found the service to be very friendly and genuine, without the 'tude you get at a lot of Portland places lately. Pros: great neighborhood vibe, easy parking Cons: closed mondays more

Aviod all together! 2/23/2008

I'm sorry to say this restaurant is just really mediocre. The sandwich I got was greasy and bland, my friends' dishes were no good either. The service was rude and stuck up, while the atmosphere was tacky and a bit depressing. I really can't see any reason to go here. Pros: Nada Cons: Everything! more

Good place 1/6/2008

Ok, in my opinion this is not a ""cozy"" place as some other reviews claim. But it definetely is a Good place! They are not expensive and you get good food for the money. The place is clean and has some taste to it. Pros: Good price-value ratio. more

Jopa.........fabulous experience tonight..great food...outstanding service 10/28/2007

For my mother's 85th bday she treated a party of 15 to Jopa. What a fabulous experience it was......diverse menu which made everyone happy. I had the pork tenderloin which rested on a bed of smashed potatoes/spinach with roasted root veges and I wanted to lick my plate!!! Not only was the food terrific but the service was the best I have had in years. I had brought a homemade cake to the restaurant and when it was dessert time it was whisked away from the table and cut/plated without us even asking them to do so. Did they read my mind???? A few weeks ago we had dinner at the 2006 Restaurant of the Year and ""that spot"" doesnt even come close to the experience we had tonight. Many thanks Jopa for a job well done.......you made my mother very happy!!!!!!!!!!!! more

Jopa is simply: Wonderful 9/19/2007

We often frequent Jopa for Happy Hour, which is the best on the west side of up town. They have ten wines under $20 we love that. In fact, all of their wines on their list have a very reasonable mark-up and many more excellent choices from Italy & PNW. Food is wonderful PNW ""Italian"". Establishment is always clean, warm and inviting. Decor is a bit 90s, but we don't mind, as service is always friendly and efficient. Bathrooms are too few, but that's my only complaint. Love the pasta dishes, flat bread pizzas and seafood entrees. Menu is very diverse and a multitude of choices for even the picky eaters. Prices are also reasonable. If you are looking for simple, good & affordable ""nice"" dining this is a great place whether Happy Hour or a comfortable dinner for family or for two. Pros: Wine list, PNW Italian food!! Happy Hour, afforable Cons: bathroom(s): too few. Can't sit outside during Happy Hour more

My favorite neighborhood joint. 9/11/2007

I have to say that I *heart* Jopa. We moved from Alberta to Hillsdale and were looking for a place to eat when we didn't feel like cooking. Jopa is awesome. The staff is great. Our server ( I cannot think of his name for the life of me) was fantastic. The next time we came in, he did not wait on us, but came by to say hello and check in on us. Love that! It's the best place around for a burger and their fish tacos are a must have! Thanks Jopa! Pros: great atmosphere, good service, awesome menu more

Great new find! 8/16/2007

We now have another great restaurant in our westside repertoire. You know the type, places that are ""locks"" when you need a place for a special occasion or just to have a great meal. The server was friendly and helpful, the atmosphere was pleasant, and best of all the food was interesting , fresh, and complex. We had the albacore (fresh Oregon), chicken with Italian ham, crab cakes, rissotto, and the chocolate lava dessert; all were beyond expectation! Pros: Great value, clean, friendly Cons: none. more

Pretty decent neighborhood place 6/17/2007

Lots to choose from on the menu, and the food is pretty good usually. Avoid non-busy hours, the waitstaff may disappear on you for a break or a smoke. Isn't that wierd? The advice in these reviews is usually ""avoid the busy times"". Anyway, if youre in the neighborhood try it out. Pros: Nice neighborhood place Cons: Service can be slow during non-busy hours more

Consistant Experience 5/10/2007

My family and I have been coming here for years, we have had brunch, lunch, dinner and a catering event. We have never had horrible service or food, and have probably had 36 different experiences. The owners are there, working. They retain the excellent staff, which by the way - Wendy is the BEST, and if we have had slow service, we usually never see the server again. The food is mostly consistant, sometimes the flavor might be a bit lighter than normal, but not bad by any means. I will mention they did change the pasta pollo, and it was better before. My favorite is the pasta bianca. We also like the other pastas very much. Also enjoyed are the mini burgers, salmon skewers and good old fashioned hot fudge sundaes! Pros: Parking, prices, food more

Great happy hour menu 5/2/2007

Although I wouldn't ordinarily venture out to ""The Taint"" ('[i]t'aint the suburbs, [i]t'aint downtown), my surburban friends brought me here for happy hour. The happy hour food was a great deal and much tastier than what I've had in some of the more well known happy hour joints (coughcough Mick&Schmicks coughcough). Nice place, but the tv in the bar made it feel more like a sports bar and less like a cozy neighborhood joint. But, hey, it's the 'burbs. Pros: great happy hour menu Cons: Happy hour gets crowded after 5pm, ""The Taint"" more

Extensive menu, wonderful staff, to die for ravioli and gnocchi 4/24/2007

I had always wondered about Jopa after driving past on my commute for the past five years, and finally stopped in on the way home--what a gem! I feel like i am in on one of Portland's best kept secrets. There is something for everyone on their menu--amazing thin-crust pizzas, perfectly done pastas (try the porcini mushroom ravioli--add grilled veggies!) and seafood an meat dishes that rival any pauncy place downtown. It really is a place you can go on a budget or to splurge--on a tuesday you can eat cheap for 7 bucks, while on a friday you can splurge on Diver Scallops or a buttery seared Halibut. Great lunch specials as well, and they bend over backwards for our kids. No complaints. more

Terrible Food and Customer Service 4/3/2007

Thought this place might be good especially since it had been highly rated at one time but not now. I ordered a vegetable calzone which was very greasy and when i asked the server if i could get something else she responded with a laugh and said, ""cheese is greasy"", there's nothing i can do if there's nothing wrong with the dinner. With that I left with terrible food and a $30.00 bill i wish i had never wasted. Pros: Parking Cons: Terrible Customer Service and Food more

Recent Changes a Disappointment 3/11/2007

JoPa used to be one of our favorite neighborhood places, until they changed the menu and raised the prices. They got rid of the roasted vegetable platter, the cheese ravioli, the chicken parm, the shrimp/pesto salad, to name a few. And they raised the prices. Where it used to be an good deal for the amount of food you got, now it's just an average Portland price. It seems like they're trying to aim more upscale than their Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway location really warrants. Pros: great desserts, good food Cons: New higher prices, smaller menu more

Comfortable and cozy - just like mom! 11/16/2006

A warm and inviting place, Jopa combines excellent food, wait staff and ambiance in to one. With a diverse menu even the little ones will enjoy, you will never feel limited on selections. Even vegetarians will be happy! The grain fed beef burger is to die for, and the italian dishes make you come back again and again. Highly recommended, give Jopa a try! Pros: Food, ambiance, wait staff Cons: I really can't think of one! more

Formidabil! 10/14/2006

This was a great restaurant. It is gone now. Pros: Great ambience! Wonderful, wonderful food. Great martinis. more

Drinks and Appetizers! 10/9/2006

For some reason, we keep ending up at this place, and it's not because we know the workers or anyone else there. Actually, the service is usually slow, and I haven't figured out why. Maybe its because they're trying to keep us there ordering more stuff. Reason: There is a good variety of food on their menu. We've only been disappointed in the lack of vegetarian dishes. They have a mixed vegetable dish, which I wouldn't eat except out of necessity. Mixed drinks are a little pricey, but definitely worth the price. *Appetizers are recommended. Maybe even order several appetizers instead of main dishes at this restaurant. more

Hidden Gem near the burbs 10/1/2006

Ok - so Beaverton-Hillsdale close in is still Portland - but Jopa is a hidden gem near the burbs. We used to live nearby and went often. Very creative and delicious menu. Cool decor! I love the burger bites and all of the salads. Bread is very good. Good wine list - would like to see even more Pacific NW wines though. Entrees are excellent - great chicken dish w/ artichokes, capers etc...Makes my mouth water thinking about it. Such a kid friendly place and I've noticed the same wait staff there for years - great sign! Service has always been good. I don't live nearby anymore - but make the drive every month or so just because it's a solid, good place. When Season's & Regions is too busy - drive on over to Jopa and you will come back time and time again! I'd love to see the chef or owners mingle with customers more. Pros: Food, Location, Service more

Great Creative Entrees 9/9/2006

The entrees and most of the appetizers (awesome calimari!) are great, but the dessert list is one of the worst I have ever seen, especially for a restaurant of that calibur. Denny's has better desserts than Jopa! They obviously need to change the desserts and bring them into the 21st century! Was very dissapointed in the only chocolate dessert on the menu - for a chocoholic that was depressing. You can get a better brownie sundae at Dairy Queen! Please improve the dessert menu! more

Jopa's Great! 7/19/2006

Their food is always good, and the happy hour is awesome! Very cheap, between $2-$5 and a wide variety of choices. The antipasto platter is delicious with olives, roasted peppers, goat cheese and bread, among several other items. The pizzas are very tasty, too. Order 2-3 dishes and you'll be stuffed. Pros: Ambiance, variety, happy hour more

Wonderful food and atmosphere - a great find! 5/13/2006

Jopa is a perfect example of a free standing restaurant, that isnt a chain, that has to stand on its own merits to survive The menu had a lot of variety: seafood to pizza, even some BBQ flavored appetizers. The food was great and the service was courteous. One of the staff, a middle aged gentleman was walking in and out of the kitchen with an apron on and I asked about the restaurant, how long in business, etc. He turned out to be the owner and was very kind and knew many other business owners that I knew through my business. As we were leaving the bus boy took my leftover calzone, and returned it in a box, labeled and dated. What a great evening, that on a whim, I could take my wife out, get a delicious meal for under $25, great service, and make a friend. Pros: Very roomy, Delicious food, Varied Menu more
