Best

We started with the bacon wrapped shrimp. They were really good. For an entree we split the special which was the surf and turf with lobster and fillet Mignon. Okay... seriously.....

Worst

The ambiance was average but the food was below. Pros: Nice patio Cons: Sub Standard Food, poor customer service from manager.

BEST restaurant in Tucson 4/26/2011

The BEST restaurant in Tucson everything i ordered was wonderful from the appetizer to the desert I love cheesecake and they have the best one in town keep on the good work more

Simply the best beef in the city 4/21/2011

Forget the many national/local steakhouse chains in Tucson (where extras are shoved-down your throat) and go to Jonathan's where the owner (Jonathan) and his wife often greet diners at their table. Simply the best beef in the city and we've tried nearly all of them. The service is good. Try the buffalo or ostrich too. more

decor and atmosphere was perfect for such a place 4/15/2011

On a tip from a Tucson Client, I dined here with my wife. The crab and steak I ordered was done to perfection, and was proiced fairly - meat was tender and melted in my mouth, and the crab was not rough or overdone. The ostrich appetizer demonstrated ostrich adequately, and not ever having ostrich before, I will say that this was great. As far as plates and decor, people should stop being so picky. The purpose of a plate is to hold food - the decor and atmosphere was perfect for such a place. The chef/owner did come and engage us in conversation, and he seems to be a great individual. more

Their menu is superbly unbeatable 4/12/2011

There are a handful of reasons why I miss Tucson: the Tohono Chul Park, 4th Ave, basketball games at McKale, and Jonathan's. My parents first brought me here when I was a wee thing, I remember my first taste of wine was at Jonathan's. I try to get here every time I am in Tucson. Their menu is superbly unbeatable. From classic prime rib, to the liver and onions which is incredibly hard to find these days, Jonathan's offers a distinguished variety of carnivorous taste pleasures. It's old school cool too, Jonathan makes regular appearances and it is easy to become a business barfly here because of the client?le and the bartenders are easy going sway. Dig it. Man I miss it here. more

Nice 3/24/2011

We went here last Saturday. The restaurant is nice and quiet inside. I've found that to be a rareity in Tucson. It seems everyone has loud music in the background that forces the overall volume of a place to rise. I digress. We tried the ostrich three ways for an appetizer, since we'd never had ostrich before. It doesn't taste like chicken. We both had the filet mignon for dinner. It comes in a bordelaise sauce. I think the sides were mased potatoes and green beans. The steak was absolutely excellent. Both of our steaks were cooked precisely to order. The bar was set high. more

I definitely recommend it 3/21/2011

We went here for my graduation dinner and I'm glad we did because it has a very old Tucson feel about it. Very rustic. We shared the three-ways Ostrich appetizer, and all of us were very impressed with it. I think we were all trying ostrich for the first time, and now we all want to have more! Dad and I had some delicious albondigas soup as starters, but my fiance really disliked his Caesar salad starter. My bbq duck entree was fantastic. I definitely recommend it. We both agree that it's worth going back. more

Very good 3/14/2011

We wanted to go there as they were particapating in the Arizona restaurant week. The service was very good and we enjoyed our meal plus the fact a drink was included too which was a nice surprise. The food was very well cooked and presented. more

Mmm Mmm Mmm!!!!!!! 3/10/2011

The Ostrich was awesome!! mmm mmm mmm. Excellent flavors and sauces. The Filet Minon was perfect and the garlic mashed potatoes were delicious. The staff was wonderful and the atmosphere was very relaxing. more

I miss you guys! 3/8/2011

Jonathan's is the biggest reason why I miss Tucson. more

Very attentive 3/7/2011

I have never recieved such attentive service in Tucson. From the greeter to the owner, I felt we were family. Well done more

Absolutely excellent 3/2/2011

JC's is a really good place to eat. the food I received was excellent - credit where credit is due, JC's has got the food down. The ostrich 3-Way appetizer is fabulous. it tasted incredible and was well-prepared. We sampled 3 bottles of Merlot, and each was good. All the food we ordered was prepared exquisitely. The service was good, too. Our waiter seemed to care about our group's dining experience in a believable way, so I give him a good mark. truly, the food here is quite commendable. So, on that basis alone, I recommend Jonathan's. more

Favorite in Tucson 2/23/2011

Upon walking in, I thought to myself, ""Finally a dark and great smelling restaurant!"" We had an assortment of foods by ordering appetizers rather than main dishes. We had the best oysters I've eaten in Tucson. After asking about the oysters, the chef came out to talk to us about where they come from and when they are delivered. They are delicious and fresh Pacific oysters. We also tried the Ostrich 3 Way, with 3 pieces of ostrich cooked in 3 different ways. Our third appetizer was the steamed artichoke, fantastic! We rarely order dessert but we were having such a wonderful time that we decided to stay. We had the New Orleans Bread Pudding. It was the first time I had bread pudding. I loved it so much, I've ordered it at other restaurants but I've never enjoyed it elsewhere. Just another note, the wine selection is fantastic and the servers are able to recommend wines based on your food choice. Eating here is a lovely experience. The service is excellent and we truly enjoyed the food. A favorite restaurant in Tucson!' more

Best I've ever eaten 2/16/2011

I had the liver and onions. Yes, I am a fan. It was the best I've ever eaten. Hands down. I can't remember what my husband ordered, but his was also excellent. Highly recommended. more

Another great meal at Jonathon's! 6/27/2009

My girl's night out was delightful as we dined on fish, pork tenderloin and steaks at Jonathon's. The service was lovely and Jonathon came to our table to make sure all of our needs were being met. He recommended a fish dish and we were not disappointed! Great wine, great food, great service. No wonder we keep going back! Thanks Jonathon and Colette for another really nice dining experience! You are truly a Tucson Original! Pros: Great meal, lovely service Cons: hard chairs more

Really poor quality meat 2/21/2009

The quality of the meat here is terrible. It is tough and full of gristle. I brought this to the attention of the waiter and he had the manager come over. Well this jerkweed starts yelling at me and telling me I don't know what I'm talking about. He even asked me what culinary school I went to! I will never go back to this ""restaurant"" Cons: Terrible food more

really awful experience 2/21/2009

We gave this place a try on the basis opf a rec from a colleague. Gotta say it was a real mistake. The food was truly terrible...they tried to cover up inferior quality meat with rich sauces. That is a mortal sin in my book. The big thing though was when I complained to the manager about the tough chewy meat he said that I didn't have to eat it if that's how I felt! Unreal. He actually expected me to pay for this shyte, too. We did but I vowed to get a review out so others can avoid this dump. Cons: Inferior quality meat covered up with sauces more

An incredibly bad experience! AVOID this dump! 2/16/2009

The food, service, and environment were awful. Grossly over priced, too! The food was of a very poor quality and it is really expensive. Our bill came to more than $80 per person and that was with just one medium priced bottle of wine and no other drinks and no dessert. The servixce was wanting. It seemed we were forever wondering where our waiter was. Meanwhile, the manager (who looked and dressed like Clem Kladiddlehopper) sat at the bar nursing a string of bourbons. Cons: really bad food and horrible service more

TERRIBLE IN EVERY WAY! 2/12/2009

We waited a while for a table. After being seated, finally, we waited another 20 minutes before we were finally able to get our server to grace us with her presence. When she pitched up it was only to tell us that she was busy...then she walks off! After another 10 minutes she turns up to ask us rather gruffly what we want to order. No explanation of specials or recommendations. When we inquire about these she simply said ""we're sold out"" then stares at us. Well, we order a couple steaks and two glasses of wine. We wanted more wine but our waitress couldn't be bothered to inquire if we needed anything. The bill came to more than $100 for very medicore food and truly terrible service. We will never return. Cons: horrible service more

Manager was picking his nose! 2/6/2009

The employees of this place are really terrible. The hostesses are stuck up idiots who could care less about you as a customer. The waitresses are more of the same - all you are is a prospective tip. The manager is one step removed from the trailer park. Anyhow, the last straw for us was watching the manager picking his nose while he's talking to one of the waitresses! Unbelieveable! We will NOT be going back to Jonathans! Cons: Sour wait staff and nose picking manager more

Editorial
  • The Scene
The brick-walled dining rooms have an understated Southwest decor, while a secluded patio with a mesquite grill offers a fair view of the mountains. It's easy to just sit back and indulge here--the atmosphere is more relaxed than in the city's other high-end restaurants.

    The Food
When Chef Jonathan Landeen added entrees such as ostrich and buffalo to standard victuals such as prime rib and steak, some traditionalists complained that the menu was leaning toward the outlandish. Many of the upscale restaurants in town have since followed Landeen's lead. Jonathan's version of the Cork offers nothing but exciting dishes. The ostrich steak, raised right here in Arizona, is as fine a preparation as you'll find. Seafood, pork and chicken also make appearances. The wine list, like the dinner menu, is unconventional but appealing.
