Editorial review from Citysearch 1/14/2013

OVERCHARGED!!!! do not visit this salon. Price painted on window says Blowouts $35.00 and in microscopic, scratched off letters ""LNG AIR EXTRA"" so I was charged an extra $25.00 for my hair length, (they never discussed this with me beforehand), and I was charged extra for the curling iron (curls fell out as soon as I left the salon). Don't waste your time in this ripoff salon. The shampoo girls also complain excessively in front of the clients. (Lexington ave location) more

Olga (Beguine on 45th and 6th Ave) 6/17/2010

I get my hair cut by Olga and she always gives me a great cut. She always does exactly what I ask for. And never cuts it shorter than I would like. She is the only stylist I have found that can cut a perfect angle on BOTH sides. I can be a bit difficult and I am so glad I found her. Pros: Always get a great haircut. Cons: Can't make appointmenst. more

I always go to Olga 10/8/2009

Despite the bad reviews below, I've been going to Olga for a number of years and she always gives me a good haircut. I am not a big fan of the salon itself but Olga is a good stylist and it's near my office. Pros: Convenient to my office. Cons: desk staff can be rude more

BEWARE!! 9/6/2009

I went in to talk about an appointment and my hair and this hideous looking troll named Antoine rudely tried to brush off the question about price, so when I cut him off and stated I no longer want to talk to him and averted my attention to the female stylist he had a hissy fit and told me to leave his salon. I told him literally to zip it and I held a rate card in front of him to block his head from my view as I continued to talk to the girl. He stood up and told me to leave so I told him to ""sit down little girl"" and I was smiling at how angry he was getting and I was now playing with him because he was pretty useless so I told him to get on his knees and beg me to leave little man and he was so obnoxious that I just kept belittling him in front of the ladies and he was so emasculated by the tiime I left I felt I got my revenge on his RUDE behaviour and I left having fully enjoyed myself. Pros: The nice stylist girl Cons: ANTOINE IS THE WORST more

Don't try to make an appointment if you're new~ 7/16/2008

I stopped by this salon over lunch because it was close to my work. I asked if I could book an appointment for any time in the upcoming weeks. The receptionist was rude and didn't seem to have time for me, and would speak so quietly I could barely hear her over the hairdryers. She asked who I wanted to see. I told her I was new. She then went through this whole thing about how unless you have seen a stylist before, you cannot make an appointment. The only way is to ""walk-in."" I'm sorry, but I may be able to leave work early for a guaranteed appointment, but how does someone just stop by and hope to get a cut and color by just ""walking in"" on a weekday? Clearly they do not want new business, and they'd prefer to keep the people they do have, and then take anyone who wanders in during the non-busy hours, which according to the receptionist are ""early morning"" or ""after two, but not after 5:30."" This is NYC - is it really so hard to find a good stylist that doesn't charge $100 for a haircut?? more

Go for simple 4/11/2008

I came here after a horrifying haircut experience at Roy Teeluck Salon (don't ever let Ali Ozel touch your hair!) to slowly, gradually get a head full of terribly done layers cut out of my head. I have thick, wavy Asian hair which the aforementioned stylist took a razor to- absolute death for thick Asian hair. Anthony at the Grand Central location understood this and is slowly taking down my layers as they grow out. He is professional, soft spoken and honest and I respect that, esp in New York. I was exasperated at spending $150 for a haircut i hated before so opted for the $45 cut here, figuring how could they screw up a simple trim? It's also conveniently very close to my work. I might not go here for precision cuts or coloring, but I think it's good for the basics. The reception staff is ehh, but Anthony is great! Pros: Anthony, super reasonable price for a trim Cons: atmosphere, staff more

Horrible! 3/23/2008

I scheduled an appointment here for a trim mainly due to convenience (i work nearby). NEVER AGAIN!! The service was horrible - rude and unprofessional. And the skill of the stylist was questionable at best. I had to argue with her about why I didn't want my ends ""texturized"". #1, ir's wrong from my hair type; #2, she didn't seem to have the basic skill to follow the lines of my existing haircut. Please! If you care about how you're hair looks, stay away from this place! more

Butchered Hair 1/10/2008

What a waste of 82 bucks! I will never go here again. This guy ruined my head of fine hair and made me look like cheap white trash. The way he cut my layers was not right for my face or hair type. He got a little too scissor-happy while flirting with me the whole time, knowing I have a boyfriend. I just wanted a fresh and classy haircut with long layers. I was specific about not wanting short layers!!! I didn't ask for a bowl-cut look with shaggy strands hanging down. This look isn't for me and I'm really unhappy knowing I have to go on a vacation in Europe with my boyfriend feeling so unattractive. I can't even put it up because most of my already fine hair is in this short layer far up on my head, and the bottom layer is only about as thick as a pencil. :( This is so depressing. I shouldn't have gone here after another friend said her hair had been butchered. more

bad hair cut 12/27/2007

I went there to get a quick hair cut....oh my god it was a hair cut gone bad..%100 NO. A person who was taking care of me was terrible in customer service and he did not greet me at all so unprofessional.I am sorry but its not worth of spending 45 to 70 dollars.... more

WORST JOB INTERVIEW EVER!! 11/7/2007

I know that most of these reviews are about the service experiences, but BELIEVE ME, this website is a great way to see if you want to have a career in a normal working environment, besides hand them money for lousy services. I never ever in my life had a job interview where the manager (antoine) is too busy to give you eye contact and explain the position, because his cheap computer can't e-mail some document to France. Their office was horrible and disorganized and his assistant couldn't be bothered to look at my resume. I went there looking for a front desk coordinator position, assuming you would be booking appoinments, they tell me ""we don't make appoinments"" . In their ad it said ""immediate consideration"", but then when I questioned it, the position was now in 3 weeks. I have worked in a high end salon environment, and have extensive experience, this is NOT the way you treat people willing to work! After I walked out of the job interview nightmare, I looked around and realized there was only one client in there and everybody is swarmed at the front desk joking and kidding around. I do not suggest seeking employment at their establishment, they ruin a good company name!!!! Their management is really unqualified and their customer service is HORRIBLE!!! more

Amazing Hairdressing skills 6/24/2007

This hairdresser was unbelievable. I travel to New York every now and then and decided to stop by the Biguine salon on Vanderbilt 45th street. The stylist greated me warmly and listended to what I had to say, after hearing me out he gave me his advice as to what he thought would look good on me. He gave me such a fabulous haircut that was truly unforgettable, it was so precise and detailed, he took his time and made sure that the cut was gonna suit my face shape and everyday life. I would ask for Arsen seeing how knowledgeable he is with hair. Pros: nice salon Cons: shampoo girl wasnt very pleasant more

Answer Phone Nightmare 1/15/2007

I recently made an appointment at Jean Claude Biguine and found the phone number on the CitySearch website. After a brief conversation with the receptionist who tried her best to avoid giving me a price estimate, I made the appointment. Moments later I scrolled down on this website and read several of the negative reviews? the general consensus being the staff are rude and they do not honor their price quotes.\r I felt uncomfortable with this, so I called back to cancel the appointment and was all ready to give some excuse of having to work etc? except the tone of the receptionist questioning my cancellation resulted in me being honest and explaining that after reading a number of bad reviews on this website, although I appreciated her time, I will not be making the appointment.\r You would not believe it but moments later my phone rang and I saw on the caller ID that it was the Jean Claude Biguine salon. I assumed they would be calling to offer some complimentary service but instead the receptionist left a scathing message quote ?we don?t care if you don?t come, we don?t need your business?. As you can imagine I was in shock, so I called back and informed the receptionist of the name of this website so she can check it out and now I see why so many people felt the staff at this salon were rude! I also told her never to call my home again! \r I have never heard of such a poor example of customer service in my life, I imagine the staff member in question is extremely inexperienced, either way she certainly does not have the salon?s best interest at heart.\r My review is simple, if you feel like treating yourself to a relaxing pamper ? avoid this place at all costs! I never even made it through the door and this is how they treated me! \r Cons: Rude Staff Memebers more

I'm a first-time customer who just turned into a last-time customer 8/23/2006

I chose this salon since I work a few blocks away. Turns out, convenience was the only positive factor of my visit. I made it very clear that I was on my lunch break and only wanted/needed a trim and the stylist (who didn't even have the courtesy of introducing himself - just plopped me in a chair) kept talking about changing my color. There was only ONE attendant there to wash hair - the wait took 15 minutes. The stylist (who I later found out on my own my asking the receptionist, was named Orlando) had no ""bedside manners"" (for lack of a better term) at all. He was squirting sprays & gels in my face, whipping the hairdryer cord in my face, burning my scalp (I kept pulling away and he saw my expression in the mirror and did nothing), furiously brushing at knots, etc. He had no personality and didn't utter a word the entire time. When it came to blowdrying my hair, he didn't communicate with me at all and just did as he pleased. To top it all off, my so-called ""trim"" turned out to be a full blown cut. When I left, I expressed my disdain to the receptionist whose only response was ""Oh, really?"" I'm not too surprised - I have a feeling customer service and follow-up isn't a priority for them. I've just read other negative feedback they've received on CitySearch and - unlike many other spas & salons - they don't respond to their customers in an effort rectify the situation(s). Thank goodness there are tons of other salons to choose from because since I will not be returning to Jean-Claude. As for Orlando, his unprofessional attitude was reflected in his gratuity... the one he didn't get from me. Pros: Convenient location Cons: Rude, unprofessional, unpleasant staff more

Not a value 10/1/2004

I called and asked for prices, and they told me $80 for 1/2 head of highlights, $50 for haircut. My total bill for just that came to $245. Highlights alone were $160. And to top it off the whole procedure took close to 3 hours, which is double the amount of time my hair normally takes. I was also wet down the back after they washed my hair, and everyone there was slow. Do not recommend!! Cons: , slow more

Great haircut 5/12/2004

This salon is so great that now that I moved to Richmond I go back to New York every now and then to get a haircut at Jean Claude Biguine. Need I say anything else? The staff is nice and very skilled. The prices are great. I go to the one close to Grand Central Station. I wish they would open a franchise in Washington D.C so that I would not have to travel so far. Pros: Inexpensive, Good service, Fabulous haircuts more

Great haircut 5/28/2003

I've been everywhere, and for what I've wanted, I found it at a pretty reasonable price at this salon. I have straight hair that I've tried to manipulate into shape by ruining it with hotrollers, etc over the years. Her cut allows me to literally air dry my lifeless, thick hair and it looks great. Best thing yet- I just walked in. PS- people who struggle with finding their length and doing stuff with their hair tend to ask me where I got my hair cut. more
