A necessary evil 3/11/2006

J&R is a necessary evil. They always have the best prices in New York -- too bad the story is organized weirdly, out of the way, staffed with frustrating sales people (who work on commission and are either too aggressive about getting your business or not helpful enough when they find out the item you need is under $100) and has a convoluted system of paying for your purchases and then picking them up elsewhere in the store. Also, women beware -- if you're on your own they'll condescend to you, and if you're with a man they'll try to only do business with him. It's a seriously annoying place, and I hate giving them my business, but they almost always have what I need at the right price. more

Great selection 12/17/2005

They have a great selection of electronics and music. The store is quite large with a section for music & videos, another section for just home theater/sound systems, another for computers. It can be a bit overwhelming if you don't know what you are looking for but I've asked the staff a number of occasions and they are helpful. They have so-so sales. Prices may not be better than competitors so you should shop around. They also have a good extensive catalog if you can't find what you are looking for in store. more

Reasonable prices -- large selection 8/29/2005

The very best things about J&R Music and Computer world is the huge selection and the reasonable prices. You can find just about anything you need in terms of music and computers. The staff is for the most part knowlegable and helpful -- sometimes they are a little busy or difficult to find. But you really can't beat the prices or the selection -- definately comparable to the "chain" industry stores. more

Good place for electronics 8/21/2005

J&R offers a variety of electronics for reasonable prices. Their prices are not the lowest but are competitive when compared to the other big New York City electronic stores. Every once in a while they will have an awesome deal. They have every different type of electrionics available, and in more than one design. They have mp3 players, computers, CDs, DVDs, cameras, and pretty much anything you can think of. The newest released DVDs are usually on sale the week they come out. I recommend this place! more

J&R 8/16/2005

This is a New York City giant when it comes to electronics. Even though they are not a national chain, they are still big enough to compete with Circuit City and Best Buys here in New York city. J&R has been around for some time now and has a very well respected reputation. Their prices may not be the lowest, but they do have great deals every so often. The sales people are usually middle aged folks who know their stuff. Unlike Best Buys who seem to hire High School students. J&R has honest prices and that's the reason why they've been around so long. They are located in City Hall, across the street from the City Hall office where the mayor works. more
