This restaurant exemplifies old school, friendly good dining. Service has been fine and efficient every time we come here. Oysters were fresh and the steaks have always been very well done. My girlfriend had the skirt steak special and the meat was done very well. I've also haven't had such fine peppercorn steak (New York) for some time. more

On Saturday, Dec. 18th I took 13 people for a birthday celebration dinner to the Iron Gate. I found the owner, to be very cooperative in meeting my requirements. Every one was pleased with their selections and we had at least 7 different entrees amoung the group. The wine selection was very nice and reasonable we had both a red and a white. Our waiter was superb. Anticipated our every need without being asked. The resturant was packed but we were able to converse. The price was reasonable. All in all it was a wonderful experience and our birthday girl was estatic with the whole experience. more

Peninsula Best 5/6/2009

There is no better restaurant south of San Francisco. Not only quality food and service, but it is where all the locals go for their fine dining requirements, Have had people call from Ohio and Pennsylvania and refer to it as their business place to go out here. more

Delicious 1/30/2009

Iron Gate is one of my favorite places to eat out -- without kids. Not really kid friendly. They make the BEST Caesar salad right at your table. A little on the pricey side, but very well worth it. They always have fabulous specials of the day! Love it more

Old Decor but great food 3/11/2008

My husband and I go to the Iron Gate at least 2 times a year for our special date nights. By the time we have appetizers, salads, entree, and dessert it's a good $150.00. It is definitely worth it. Walking in to a time tunnel with old decor and may be a bit on the older side clientele if you go during the earlier seating. Later gets a bit younger. The food is super, I recommend appetizer, Crevettes Bordelaise Prawns, hearts of palm salad, fillet of sole with a light cream sauce, and souffle to top it off. It's the old school of restaurants with matre' d to waiters in tuxes. Maybe use a remodel?! more

Great food, Elegant Atmosphere 9/20/2006

We came here to celebrate my dady's birthday and we all absolutely loved the dining experience. the waiters were very nice and courteous, the food was amazing with wonderful flavors, and everything was very reasonably priced. it waas also beautifully decorated.\r we will definately be returning to iron gate. Wow... I love this restaurant! No doubt you'll love it too. Great place for a special dinner. The service is impeccable. The food is devine. Wine selection that perfectly matches the menu. This place will make you and your date very happy. more

Very nice food, awesome deserts! 6/19/2006

I think if you like continental food, this is a great place; some things, like a Caesar salad, are prepared table-side. The meat dishes were excellent, although I prefer much more authentic spicy foods myself. The deserts were excellent, make sure you try the souffle'!!!! more

Get your European fix elsewhere... 7/29/2003

After hearing about improvements done, I decided to give this place a second try after 10 years. Unfortunately, despite the hype I hear I was still very disappointed. The oysters I ordered for the first course tasted as if they had been opened hours ago and just made to sit on ice. My sole entree was ok but a bit overcooked. And the chocolate souffle was was a white souffle with chocolate suace. The wine selection is marginal and our server was inattentive and haughty. Given the quality of the items-- it was definetely not worth the the cost of the final bill. Cons: Mediocre food, Poor wine selection, Inattentive staff more

Continental Cusine at its Best 12/4/2002

Now that the days of The Blue Fox, Ernie's, The Squire Room (Fairmont Hotel), etc. in San Francisco are long gone, making way to all the Alice Waters rip-offs, The Iron Gate is the only remaining great Continental Cuisine restaurant left in the Bay Area. Classics like Tornados Rosini, Veal Oscar and Cherries Jubilee, among many others, are prepared to perfection. Many of the dishes are prepared or finished table side like the Caesar Salad (the best ever), the Pepper Steak and Crepes Suzette. How come there are no other places like this anymore? Its not worth the drive up to the Bella Vista if you can go to the Iron Gate. Also, for all you California Cuisine lovers, if you want to eat a low calorie meal, stay home! Its' okay to gluttonize on occasion. more
