Rude behavior and poor attitudes 9/17/2009

Human Concerns is a center that excepts donations to help people in the city of south milwaukee with various needs such as food, clothing, household items etc;\r My mother is generally the one who goes when our household needs items. My mother is a senior citizen, I am disabled and we also provide shelter to the son of a friend of ours who has special needs. My mother came back from there crying one day due to the way she was treated. This upset me greatly and I made a call to try to rectify the situation to ensure that something like that would not happen again. This was about a year ago. My mother has not been feeling well and our household was in need of food and clothing so I went this time. The woman at the front who did intake was very nice. The other staff on the other hand were completely rude . They made me feel so uncomfortable and ashamed to be there. I expressed that I had never been there before and that I was not sure how things worked. I was there for myself and the other 3 people in my household and i was told that i could only have one bread item when i explained that i was there for 4 people total i was told again that I could only have one bread item and not to ""touch"" this not touch that only take one of this or one of that.. a few seconds later another staff member came by and said i could take as many buns as i wanted -i was so confused! Then when i took 3 bags of buns and one loaf of bread then I got snapped on by the other woman again --mind you there was a ton of bread there. After being allowed into the section with clothing I explained to my boyfriend who was there with me that he could only take 3 clothing items and that included shoes , there was a whole clothing display of harley tops and he got very excited and one of the ladies snapped at him to not touch those shirts they have to go through it first to make sure there were no holes or tears he happily said that was no problem and that he did not mind a few holes here and there , and then in a very rude snotty kind of way she said no you can not have any of those items we have to go through them first and decide what stays on the floor( the items were on racks in the same area as the rest of the clothing) I explained that to my boyfriend when he asked me about it again while trying to find shoes . Then a woman approached me in front of everyone and told me that if I wanted to be able to get help in the future I should watch what I say. I told her I was there to get help not argue I am a peaceful person , told her god bless her and have a better day and she in a very snotty voice for everyone to hear said that I should pray that he blesses me seeing as he apparently has not and that she is having a great day. I have never been treated like that at any type of pantry before. I have also worked in shelters and pantries and would NEVER ever treat anyone in the manner I was treated at human concerns. The items are donated for the people coming in to make use of. Where I have worked I have always made it my mission to try to put a smile on peoples faces and help them as much as I could. The staff acted as though they were hoarding items in their personal home and we were looters or something. People in need should still be treated with dignity. It is a very uncomfortable feeling to know that that is the only place in our city where we can go for donated items and we either put up with being treated like dirt under someones shoes or we get nothing. Pros: The woman who does intake Cons: The rest of the staff more
