Worst

The food was written up very elegantly in the menu...only to lead up to the disappointment in your mouth. The service was fine. I would not recommend it. Pros: ambience ...

Overrated, but Tries Hard--Too Hard 8/25/2002

Yes, the atmosphere is nice, the menu interesting, and the wine and tequila list exhaustive, however, Hugo's seems overrated from our experience on a Sunday night. To get to the menu items you must navigate through numerous pages of wines and tequilas (we found this obnoxious), and once you were actually able to read about the food--you find that the dishes listed are tempting, but almost tries too hard. Everything is quite nouvelle cuisine-sounding. The service was absolutely terrible. Everyone was quite friendly, but our table's consensus was that they seemed to have little or no prior experience. The desserts were to die for, and truly quite exquisite. Overall, we were underwhelmed and will not return in the near future, but might try it again in a few months. Pros: Location, Atmosphere, Desserts Cons: Service, Overly-Ambitious Menu more

Terrific food 8/19/2002

We were seated promptly, somewhat before the hordes on a Sat. evening. The food was really the star here - great appetizers and the main courses. The tacquitos were excellent as an appetizer and the chile relleno was good as main. They have a good drink and wine list. The wines are only 2 times the retail price. Nice ambiance. Our server was OK but she was hard to hear and a little tentative about food questions. Pros: OK Prices, Nice menu Cons: Crowded!, Slow service more

Serious Mexican 8/15/2002

The building drew us in - neat old warehouse in the Montrose area. The decor and atmosphere were appealing - mucicians in a balcony, not overbearing, but a nice backdrop. Great tequila selection, but wait staff pressured us to drink wine, not a margarita - trying to break the Mexican food/Margarita connection, but why? Another break from traditional expectations - no chips/salsa - but nice pepitas. Entrees were fine, with interesting flavors. Cafe de olla - cinnamon coffee was great afterwards. more
