Excellent Spanish Coffee! Great friendly service here & I love the atmosphere here. I stop for HH here whenever possible. Good food, nostalgic original Portland venue!!

Worst

It's been difficult to find a nightspot that's geered to the dressy late 20's and 30's crowd. For those tired of the all black-local band-local beer scene, here's a bar and restau...

Good food, lousy service 12/20/2008

We had a reservation for four at 7:30. We were seated at 8:10. Sat at the bar and watched the food prep for 40 minutes. Saw lots of prime rib plates being served. One of the waiters mentioned that it was the ""special"" for the evening. After being seated, our waiter informed us that it was only being served to a private party in one of the other rooms. We ordered drinks and an appetizer along with our meal order. Drinks and appetizer show up 15 minutes later followed two minutes later by one of our four entrees. (cold gravy) Pros: the place to go for turkey or spanish coffee Cons: lousy service more

Just great 9/24/2008

This is a great place. The atmosphere is great and food too. I am going to Huber's every once in a while and it is just constantly good. The honey roast ham and the side dishes were authentic German food! Especially after the horrific experiences in the ""wanna be"" German places around town I was seriously surprised about the quality. What else can I say. Just an overall fantastic place. Pros: Food, drink, atmosphere Cons: very busy after work and weekend bar more

Great Coffee but Minimal Seating 9/21/2008

We came on a Friday night and all the tables were reserved so were seated at the bar where the bar tenders were very attentive and did not even write down our orders. I got the buffalo burger. I was excited never had buffalo before but I couldn't taste the meat bc of the spicy sauce it was marinated in. My friend's skewers and tuna appetizers were also really spicy. The Greek salad though looked fantastic, mb a little too much onion but delicious my friend said. For dessert we got the flaming coffee drinks that were a sight to see when prepared but were very alcoholic and I was the only one who finished mine. Overall great service and ambiance, loved the glass ceilings and romantic feel though the food wasn't the best around. Pros: bartenders Cons: food too spicy more

Not good 9/12/2008

made res. for 7 PM but was told we had made them for 8, WRONG, did get seated fairly quick though, Onion rings were not cooked all the way, We waited at least 45 min. for our entrees and then they were just slightly warm. Service was not good. Way to noisy in the main dinning room ( near the bar). Wait staff was seen outside around corner smoking cigs. nice. Just lazy service and taking themselfs for granted. You can have a much better experience somplace else. I really hope the owners of this place read these reviews. But I don't think anything would change. Pros: Do you like turkey any time of the year? Cons: Not worth the trip downtown more

Great Mothers' Day Lunch 5/25/2008

I had wanted to eat at Huber's since moving here 4 years ago. I made the request for Mothers' Day and after reading all the reviews of bad service, was a bit concerned. WE had a great experience. The service was impeccable, the food was great, and the prices are good. Son and I had the combination plate, and it was really good - a real ""Sunday Dinner"". Husband had the turkey crepe and he didn't offer to share. Pros: Good Food and excellent service more

Still Great Food , Not Fancy , Warm and Friendly 2/25/2008

This is 2nd time I have eatean here. I won't rewiew this fine establishment again for at least 1 year .I had dinner with my girlfriend and our 7 year old grandaugher. The steam clams were perfect, full of flavore, the beer bread was fresh and great . The Shirley Temple for our grandaugher was beautiful. Our cocktails were made perfectly. The wine menu is fairly priced, we had a bottle of French White Wine. My girlfriend had Cioppino it was""outstanding"". My dinner was the 1/2 and 1/2 {turkey and ham) , yes I had the same thing again -but I love it. The grandaughter had shrimp cocktail and she ate it all . This time we had the Spainish Coffee , the best!!!!!. Just a side note> If you are going to bring young children here make sure there able to act responsible for the comfort of everyone else. The service was great !! Pros: Everything Cons: Sometimes Parking more

""A"" List Required 2/22/2008

The food was quite good, however, with reservations you would assume if there is a table in the main area available it would be yours. This is not the case here. After several visits to this restaurant I've concluded that either they have an ""A"" list who receive special treatment or that you must be a special type of person, definitely not lesbian, to not be seated next to the cooks station. I may get take out from there once in awhile but I will not longer frequent this restaurant. more

Old School Food and Service That Works 1/21/2008

Before coming here I looked at the reviews on City Search . Being that this is the oldest restaurant in Portland Oregon , I said what the heck, lets go for it anyway. We were seated promptly. The wine list has a good selection and not over priced. I selected a white wine from New Zealand for $20.00, it was really good for the value. We ordered Crab Cakes (Had good flavor, but get the sauce on the side- I rated this Item a 7 out of 10).The spinach salad was on the money (10 out of 10).The haibut with a caper-lemon butter sauce was a 10 out of 10 . My dish was the 1/2 and 1/2-Turkey and Ham combo with stuffing, mash potatoes, veggies and gravy . Great flavor and cooked to perfection .We did not order the Spinish Coffee but other people said it was great, that we talked to. Pros: Great old school charm and food Cons: Nothing more

Really disappointed with the service 12/23/2007

I brought my parents here for a pre-holiday dinner-they are visiting from New York. I wanted things to go well-I mean, this is only their second trip here in 5 years. While the food was good, the service was severely lacking. more

What a disappointment! 12/19/2007

I made reservations for Thanksgiving dinner here several months in advance. My fiance and I looked forward to a wonderful meal on our holiday for a long time only to be let down from the get-go. Despite having reservations, we were told there was no room for us in the dining room and were seated in the hallway by the kitchen in front of a blaring TV and around all the waiting guests. When we were finally waited on, our food came out before our drinks and both orders were wrong! When they brought the correct orders out, they were cold and then they rushed us through the whole meal, checking to see when they could take away our plates every 3 or 4 minutes. We were planning on having one of their famous Spanish coffees, but weren't even given the opportunity or time to order a second drink. We were treated like second rate customers and the only reason I can think of is that it was because there was only two of us. We got ripped off our hopes of a wonderful holiday meal together were completely ruined. Pros: Food, although cold, was edible Cons: Slow service, rude waiters, cold food, snobby staff, loud kitchen and blaring TV, reservations dpn more

Do not waste your time 12/17/2007

1.5 hours past our reservation we decided to leave. Portland has way too many great resturants to bother with this one. more

BEST TURKEY, SPANISH COFFEES, AND MAI TAI'S ANYWHERE!!! 8/26/2007

I LOVE this place, The only place I've ever been to where they prepare hot or iced Spanish coffees AT THE TABLE! Really awesome table side show (perfect for dates) and they taste really great to, best anywhere. The turkey cuisine is really good, thanksgiving style meals anytime, and if thats not your thing that the pasta and seafood dishes are really good to, everything is fresh, mostly nothing comes frozen and a lot of stuff is made in house from scratch. The Happy hour prices can't be beat either, Huge portions no matter what! more

we left before we even ordered 5/27/2007

After reading about the history of Huber's online, I chose to go there to celebrate my engagement. We made reservations and when we showed up promptly, they had no record of our reservation. They finally shoved us at a tiny table right next to the front door in an extremely loud room and never came back. We left immediately. Pros: Amazing history Cons: terrible service! more

disappointed, underwhelming, sadly lacking 5/6/2007

We came here as a family on a Sunday early evening for dinner. At 5pm, we were the only ones in the place. It's got a great atmosphere, and I really wanted to like the place. There is a great history to Huber's. It is one of the oldest restaurants in town. However, since it was completely dead, I got the feeling that we were sort of an irritation to the staff that had been busy visiting at the end of the bar when we arrived. Pros: location, environment Cons: not very good food, not very good service more

A great place if you are looking for very traditional food 4/8/2007

The place has been run by an oriental family almost since the beginning, so they have a few odd items too. I was a little surprised that on easter they weren't serving dinner all day. The turkey was very good, but I was a little disappointed they didn't have the yams. Price was very reasonable. Four adults and 2 children, plus a drink each and coffee (but no desert) was under $100. Dinner would have been 50% more. Pros: Turkey, Spanish coffee Cons: parking, like everywhere downtown more

You don't have to wait for Thanksgiving for a delicious Turkey dinner! 3/11/2007

While the wonderful ambiance is something Huber's is known for, the food may just be better! After being seated promptly (it was a Sunday evening so it was not very crowded) we were then waited on shortly and our food arrived only a few minutes later! All three of us ordered the Traditional House Specialty of Tom Turkey, and we were ohhing and ahhing between every bite! The dressing was just like my mom makes and full of flavor! The turkey was tender, the mashed potatoes were smooth and creamy; both were topped with just the right amount of flavorful gravy! Even though we were soo full, we had to order the Spanish Coffee just so we could see it made at our table! The things that man could do with a wine glass and an open flame! While the only cons of Huber?s is during their peak hours (Mon-SA 6pm to 11pm) it is VERY noisy in the beautiful skylight bar area you can always sit in the other dining room which is usually much quieter. Pros: Great Food, Great Ambiance, Great Service! Sunday evenings are a great time to go! Cons: Verry Filling-order dessert 1st! more

Wow! What a Spanish Coffee! 2/28/2007

So I mentioned to a friend that I miss my local watering hole in NY because it had the BEST Spanish Coffees. He said I should try Hubers. He had also recommended a REALLY bad Mexican restaurant (SANDOVALS in the West Hills, terrible!) so I ignored him. Months went by and one night I found myself Downtown in the rain and wandered in Hubers. more

Too Slow, crappy service!!!!! Will not go there again! 2/24/2007

I am not a very picky person when it comes to eating out, but this place was terrible. For starters the restaurant was too dark and gloomy and the seating was not comfortable. I know its a historic place and all but ..mmm... i didn't like it. The thing that ruined everything for me was the service. We waited 40 or so minutes to be served!!!!!!!!!! We didn't even get an apology from the waitress or anything. I can't believe we didn't get up and leave!!! We stayed, that's how hungry we were. We did think about it several times though. At one point i looked over to where the cooks were and they were standing around talking!! The only cool thing about the whole night was the way the bartender made the spanish coffee in front of us. It was like a 2 minute show, with the flames and stuff. The food was ok but by the time the food came we had lost our appetite. I am in no way exagerrating. We will not be going back and will not recommend this place no matter how good the coffee was.. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!! Pros: SPANISH COFFEE Cons: CRAPPY SERVICE-OLD NOT GOOD LOOKING RESTAURANT more

Food was great but service was horrible!!! 2/18/2007

We made reservation for a party of 10 at 8 pm and when we got there they had no idea where they were going to seat us so while they scrabbled around looking everywhere to put some tables together we waited patiently for 30 minutes! I was not to happy with that and that was just one of the many disappointments I had that night. Our server was very slow and had no customer service skills! We waited another half hour just for our side salads and even those werent very impressive, then another half hour for our dinner plates and by then we were starved to my surprise the food was actually pretty good I would applaud the food! The manager came over to ask how it was and in the mean time we were waiting for our ticket so he got on top of that. We had to split our own ticket which was odd so needless to say 2 and half hrs later we finally left. I think I mite give it another try just not with a big party only because the food was good. Pros: Great food Cons: Horrible Service more
