Elegant AND delicious (just take your hat off!) 3/11/2009

Wow!! The hostility in these reviews is way off base from the Houston's I know... I have frequented this store for years, and the service is always outstanding. Ribs, prime rib, salads, and Chicago style spinach dip all rock my world. The French fries also live up to their reputation. The restaurant is known for its rules and restrictions: dress code, incomplete parties, limited reservations. But if you're really that mad about taking your hat off, I guess maybe you SHOULD go somewhere else. Long story short, this restaurant delivers! (Oh, and the Westheimer location does to-go food and reservations, even though the Kirby location doesn't). Pros: Great food, professional staff Cons: Not good for parties over 7, no banquet accomodations more

Service is sh!t, burger bread consistently soggy 10/24/2008

Service: C Pros: The food is still decent Cons: Snobby service, i will never return more

A place you'd take a friend 9/23/2008

My wife & I celebrated our 30th anniversary last nite. We have dined @ Houston's in Austin & all 3 Houston locations for over 20 years. We had our favorite, the Baby-Back Ribs. They were meaty and done to perfection. The skillet beans have their own zestful flavor. The portions were as generous as ever. Service was excellent; Alex was very personable and courteous; he was on top of things. The atmosphere was casual & relaxed. Not too crowded and / or loud. We had a wonderful dining experience and will be sure to return. Our compliments to Juan, the front-of- the-house Manager and his staff. Pros: Service; Food quality & portions Cons: Burgers a little pricey more

Consistant food that is always good! 11/21/2006

My husband and I love to come here for a meal and are usually never disappointed. We've had great service every time we eat here except the last time. We were at a booth eating and the waiter spilled someone else's sauce on my husband,(as he walked by he stumbled). It got on the glass window and my husband's face and silk sweater, but there wasn't much of an apology. I was a little disappointed when the manager came by and asked my husband what he could do which seemed awkward for us to be the one to say what they could do about it. My husband didn't want to complain too much. Anyway because my husband didn't say much and wiped it off of his face and sweater that was that......I would have expected a little more from the manager but did not get anything except an offer for some dessert. Oh well, it probably won't prevent us from returning since this is the only incident we have had and overall we really like their food. Nevertheless, I want everyone else to know that this happened to us. more

Great to take a new love in your life 7/27/2006

The food is very, very good for the price. The servers are second to none. The drinks are drinks and not the watered down stuff you get in other places. The mgrs. really come up and ask how was the meal. The bar tenders are friendly and don't talk to much. The sound level is just right to talk and get to know one another. The place is never boring.I have had everything there at one time or another and I always leave with a feeling of Hmmmmm that was really good. So if you want to try some thing nice. Just do it any night of the week. Don't for get to say I want something good tonight. Pros: Up more

Ummm 3/30/2006

Ive been living down the road for two years and have never been, and there was a perfectly good reason for that. My girlfriend and i went the other night for the first time. I wanted to start with an appetizer but after looking at my choices of about 6 different dips or beans i decided to go straight to the menu. The menu is very small and not much variety to choose from. I ordered the tuna steak which was ok but small portions and moderate flavor. My girlfriend ordered a chicken salad. I dont mind paying $12 for a house wine but if your gonna have that kind of level of quality to start the night make sure you dont use frozen deli sliced chicken that comes out of a bag which came on my girlfriends chicken salad. Overall this place was garbage in my opinion. Pros: wine selection Cons: variety, waitstaff, portions more

WHAT HAPPENED? 3/30/2004

I have been to Houston's numerous times over the past 12 years. As often as 4-6 times a year. My husband and I went on a Teus. night, seated ourselves in the bar ""smoking"" area, and waited. The server knew nothing about the wine they have. She was slow, and presented our check on the table - no book - we wanted desert and coffee. The espresso was cool and there was no lemon twist. She looked annoyed when we asked for one. We then had to wait another 10 min. to get our new check. All of the staff were wearing jeans, and the bartender was shouting to the staff at the opposite and of the bar throughout the evening. We always look forward to going to Houston's their ribs and salads are the best. Mostly we were dissappointed at the level of service, and unprofessional attitude. Pros: Food Cons: , Attitude, Noise level more

A Turnaround 2/19/2004

I visited this location back in August of 2003. I have seen some changes in the place on my last visit. Valentine's Day at Houston's was perfect. I had a female server. She was very attractive and friendly. Everyone in the place was all smiles. The food was much better than it was in August. I noticed this review states it is not kid friendly. That is totally incorrect. THIS RESTAURANT IS ALL ABOUT THE FAMILY. They even have writing tablets and toys for the kids to enjoy. I see a change in Houston's at Westheimer. Pros: for the whole family, smiles everywhere, worth the wait more

enjoyable 3/1/2003

MY WIFE AND I GO THERE ONCE A MONTH. WE MEET DIFFERENT PEOPLE AROUND THE BAR BEFORE BEING SEATED THAT ALWAY ENJOYABLE. THE STAFF IS VERY NICE AND PROMPT. THEIR FOOD AND DRINKS ARE THE BEST. THANKS Pros: ROMANTIC, GOOD STAFF, GOOD PRICES Cons: NONE, NONE, NONE more

Crowded & s-l-o-w 7/18/2002

A group of 6 of us went on a Thursday night, arriving at 8 p.m. We waited at least 45 minutes for a table. Once seated, we got our drinks and appetizer orders, but the waiter did not come back for our dinner orders until at least 30 minutes later. By the time we finished, it was 11 p.m.! I had the French dip, which I found overly rich with the added mayonaisse. Others had the Club Salad (thumbs up), the Ahi Salad (thumbs up) and the NY Strip (thumbs up). Overall, decent food but rather slow. Pros: bar scene Cons: slow service more

Always Good 7/2/2002

My husband and I enjoy eating at Houston's whenever we get the chance. We also brought my parents when they came to visit and they thoroughly enjoyed their foood. No matter what we order--from salad to prime rib--the food is always excellent. The waitstaff tends to be a bit on the slow side though. Pros: great food, good value Cons: slow service, crowded more

  • In Short
Burnished brass and stained wood complement roughly mortared brick and the occasional plant. Amid ubiquitous earth tones, corporate types and small parties (celebrating or simply living large) occupy deep booths done up in fine upholstery and lit from above by pin spotlights. Burgers, prime rib and steaks are the specialties of the house, but the menu also includes salmon, salads, pork chops and roasted chicken.
