Best

The room we stayed in was vey clean and people very cool we will be back again. It was a celebration for my brothers birthday, THANKS! Pros: Great clean place Cons: not go...

Worst

Tiny rooms, thin walls, not actually downtown. There was also an Adult Book Store a block away, which doesn't bother me much but if you're traveling with family, it's something...

Cute Hotel 3/5/2010

We were in town for my wedding, and all of my family and bridal party stayed at this hotel on referral from my caterer, Rafati's. I have nothing but compliments about the hotel staff. Rooms were generous and very clean, beds comfy - our whole stay was a delight. Pros: Boutiquey, Great Atmosphere, Good Service Cons: None more

Great place to stay 5/10/2009

Perfect Finish to a Perfect Night 2/13/2009

Guys, I gotta tell you this is THE hotel to take the ladies to. Period. You walk in - big romantic pictures on the wall. SCORE. Bar in the lobby. SCORE. The room was spotless, the interiors were period and romantic. 100% quality service. The best hotel I've stayed at lately. Bar none. Pros: Attention to Detail was Impeccable more

Period hotel makes for a memorable anniversary weekend 1/22/2009

My husband and I live in PDX and were looking for a local hotel for a weekend stay that had something special. We also knew that we wanted to spend more time "in" than "out'. Hotel deLuxe has that "something special". It honors Hollywood's golden era with lovely decor. The room was excellent with attention to detail in its setup and appointment. The staff made us feel very welcome. We ate at the restaurant which was good (not knock-your-socks-off quality but good) and enjoyed the bar (smaller, cozy) and tried a few of the special themed drinks (i.e.: "The Elizabeth Taylor") which were great. I definitely would go back and also would recommend it to others who want something special that boutique hotels offer. Pros: Wonderful detail honoring Hollywood of the 40's & 50's Cons: Restaurant - although lovely - quality was so/so more

What are you doing for New Year's Eve? Hotel deLuxe! 1/18/2009

We stayed at the Hotel Deluxe for the Past 2 New Year's Eves. They nailed it this year! Between the wonderful rooms. I love all the great amenities (pillow, i pod and spiritual menus to name a few). The champagne was flowing, hors d'oeuvres were amazing ie blue cheese poppers, Stolen Sweets was the best possible choice for a band, and Nuvrei passed desserts YUM, The Hotel staff from the top down was amazing. The drinks in the driftwood were divine. They have an amazing Happy Hour. We are already saving our pennies for next year! Pros: Ambience, staff, bar, romantic, ammenities, parking, & pet friendly Cons: expensive more

A gem in Portland 9/25/2008

Love this hotel. My husband and I stayed here on our wedding night, including four days preceding the wedding, and arranged a discount rate for our group of out of towners, from whom I heard only complimentary reviews. The only disparaging thing I could say is that the exercise room is puny and depressing--then again the hotel decor harkens back to old hollywood and doesn't really inspire a workout. I also thought the marlene deitrich room was fun, but not worth the extra cost. We stayed in another executive level suite prior to the wedding, which we thoroughly loved and were kinda sorry we bothered to move for the post-nuptials. Staff members, in particular the valets, were incredibly pleasant and helpful. We also organized a large post-wedding breakfast for our wedding party at Gracie's, and they nailed it with great American standards and attentive service. As for the swanky Driftwood Lounge, I love that it's retained its original funkiness since the makeover. For cleanliness, Portland quirk, old glamour style and charm, and convenience of location, this is a great choice. Pros: fun vibe, clean rooms, convenient location, professional staff Cons: tiny gym more

My Favorite Hotel in Portland! 8/24/2008

it doesn't get any better than this especially for their great prices. The lounge downstairs has the perfect setting,,,it's dimmed lighting, very mellow and almost a 70's feel. The rooms are very clean and cozy and the service is fantastic! You can even bring your dogs here,,,you won't find many places that you can bring your doggies along in Portland. Hotel Deluxe is fabulous and I look forward to spening many more nights there in the future. You should check it out. more

Beautiful!! 6/2/2008

My husband and I stayed here on our wedding night. The lobby was amazing, the Driftwood Lounge is gorgeous, and they left champagne in our room for the occasion. The bed was SO comfortable and the staff was very friendly but not in a fake annoying way. My only complaint, which isn't really a complaint but I think is worth mentioning is that the rooms are really small. I read this in other reviews and it's true. :) We didn't mind but I think if I were staying in the room for more than one night it might bother me. The bathroom was also VERY small. 1912 hotels were made much smaller! The room was lovely and we enjoyed staying there, but it's definitely cramped. Pros: beautiful Cons: small rooms more

Superior service at this gorgeous hotel! 4/18/2008

I stayed at Hotel deLuxe for 4 nights and loved every minute of my stay. The decor was wonderfully clever and of high quality with a twist on old Hollywood. Comfortable, clean and beautiful rooms. The service was excellent and every member of the staff that I met was incredibly helpful and eager to please. I'm surprised that the rates are not higher, and would recommend taking advantage while this lasts! Fantastic hotel, and I will definitely stay here again and again. Pros: Stunning hotel, such fun, fantastic service, lovely dinning room, great bar too! Cons: None more

Is this right? 7/15/2007

I paid $120/nt! WOW any other city this would be $300/nt +tx . Unique boutique style hotel with superb decor and service. Nearly super location, a little out of DT but still very accessible to all that DT has to offer. Very very clean and quiet. Yes the room is a little small with a huge bed. But what does one need with huge hotel rooms? The view is good from the top story and the elevators fast. Driftwood room does what Doug Fir Lounge only wishes it had: real soul. Pros: Location, value, room quality Cons: bathroom ventilation more

Friendliest and Most Knowledgeable Staff! 3/11/2007

I have traveled all over the world and stayed in everything from Ritz-Carltons to Marriotts to Boutiques like the Soho Metropolitan. I had heard from a friend about a portland landmark hotel that just underwent a "massive" renovation, and I was told that I must check it out the next time I was in portland. When I pulled up the Doorman and valet were waiting for me. They were warm in their welcome and carried my bags while escorting me to the front desk. They introduced me to the front desk agent who said they'd been expecting me (so I knew they had my reservation), They asked how my journey in to town was and then proceed to check me in. They told me only the information they knew a business traveler would want to know like 24-hour room service, Wireless internet, Pillow menu, and of course their bar the driftwood lounge. Before the front desk agent called the elevator for me they asked if I needed a wake up call the next morning (grudgingly I said yes); they also asked if I would like room service to give me a call in 5 mins (I had in the course of checking in mentioned that I was tired and hungry). When I got to the room it surprised me how well the decor matched their "hollywood glamour" theme, with what I would call a retro-art deco look. The bathroom was a bit small and I had the hardest time with the lack of counter space. I turned on the Flat screen High Def TV and five minutes later I get a call from room service (go figure they actually followed through)! The food was amazing, and unlike some room service which is cold and not worth the wait or price; this was like dining in the restaurant. Everywhere I went in the hotel they knew me by name, they always had an answer to my "city questions", if I needed directions they would have maps waiting for me; they even offered me a drink while in the lobby working! I was completely and utterly surprised by this smaller boutique hotel, which might as well have been any five-star behemouth. Pros: Friendly/Knowlegable staff, convienient location, service, ambience and decor Cons: Counter Space more

Out With the Old in with the New 3/7/2007

The old Mallory is alive and well and living inside the new Hotel deLuxe. I was sceptical after having learned that this great Portland hotel had been renovated recently. My fears were short lived. Upon arrival I was met by a very attentive doorman who followed me from my car to the lobby with an umbrella overhead. Nice touch. All I wanted was a quick check in and a martini. Glad to see that the Driftwood is exactly as it should be - the same. My bags were delivered to my room, another nice touch. Too tired to eat in the dining room I ordered room service delivered in less time than expected and prefaced by a very thoughtful phone call announcing that my order was "on the way up". Yet another nice touch. The rooms are amazing. I especially enjoyed the giant flat screen TV and the fact that I was able to watch American Idol in HI DEF. The beds? Comfortable. Clean? Yes, very. Decor? Very classy and different. While waiting for my car to be brought around I watched as the staff at the front desk interacted with other guests. Note: nothing robotic; instead fun, honest and sincere. You could tell they knew what they were doing. High marks again for this "New" old charmer. Pros: Sincere service Cons: NADA more

Amazing staff, great beds, great location! 3/7/2007

This is the best hotel! I travel quite frequently to Portland and have stayed at many downtown properties (The Governor, Hotel Monaco, Vintage Plaza, Hotel Lucia), and this is by far my favorite. The service is untouchable. The staff far exceeded every expectation I had. The rooms are great. Everything is new and up to date, flat screen TVs, ihomes, pillow menu, ipod menu! I slept terrific, I ate great, and you can't beat the location. It's slightly out of central downtown, so it's quieter than any of the other hotels I have stayed at. It's also the closest to the Pearl District which is my favorite area of Portland. If you need to stay in Portland, this is where to do it. No other hotel can even come close to the quality of stay I had here. Pros: Staff!!!!, Rooms, Location Cons: None more

Great Hotel 1/9/2007

First, the staff was amazing. Maybe it is just a "Portland thing", but every single staff member we encountered was friendly and helpful and did everything they could to make sure we were enjoying our stay. The hotel is not quite downtown, but there really isn't any need to be when a 10-15 walk will get you just about anywhere. There is a train (the MAX) stop about a half block away. We rented a car, but found it really wasn't necessary unless you planned to take trips to the coast or mountains like we did. Also, the valet was extremely helpful to have when it was raining. The decor and amenities are what really made a difference for me. There was a very understated, Old Hollywood feel. But it is also a very modern hotel, with the iHome docking station for your iPod, flat screen TV's, a pillow menu, etc. Very cool touches that you hardly ever see. As for the rooms...yes, the Queen deLuxe rooms are TINY. But in all fairness, the website does describe this room as one "for a single traveler or a very cozy couple". There is just enough room for the bed, a couple of nightstands, a dresser, and a small table. While a little more room would have been nice, this worked out just fine for us. They do have larger rooms available for people who need the extra space, as advertised on their website. Perhaps a little more research by those who were so unhappy with the size of the room would have made their trip a more pleasant one. I can't really comment on the room service. The only thing we ordered was dessert, which was good and was delivered quickly, but probably isn't enough of a barometer. We went to the bar late one night and the drinks were inventive and the bartender was friendly. We ordered mini hamburgers, which weren't the best I've ever had, but were perfect for that late night snack. We really enjoyed our stay. There are probably fancier, bigger, more run-of-the-mill hotels in Portland, but this one is unique and very much worth checking out. Pros: Service, Amenities, Cozy Beds, Location Cons: Their cheapest rooms might be too small for some people more

I wish I'd known these things before staying there... 11/17/2006

Tiny rooms, thin walls, not actually downtown. There was also an Adult Book Store a block away, which doesn't bother me much but if you're traveling with family, it's something to consider. If none of these details bother you, enjoy your stay at Hotel Not-So-Deluxe. Pros: comfy bed, nice TV, iPod docking station Cons: small room, thin walls, not actually downtown as advertised more

Great decor and details, young & inexperienced staff 11/6/2006

The decor in this charming hotel is beautiful and not cheesy, as it could have easily turned out. The Hollywood glam details are well-done and consistent. The lobby is gorgeous. The King Feature room was large, with a sitting area and nice furniture. The bathroom wasn't huge but was well-done with marble and a nice sink and fixtures. The bed was soft and cozy. If you appreciate old world charm, you're more likely to like this place. We had stayed here a couple of times when it was the threadbare but still nice Mallory and this is a great improvement on that classic. We love the Driftwood Room, which is updated some but still has it's charm. We didn't eat at Gracie's but the atmosphere looked wonderful. The location is great because it is near to downtown, The Pearl District (including Powell's Bookstore), and 23rd Avenue shopping. The only negatives were that the staff, though nice, seem young and inexperienced. The valet that returned our car had driven it with the parking brake on (despite the angry red light telling him so) and told us that our car was making a "noise." Last, depsite our room being one of the nicer ones in the hotel, it shared a wall with the stairwell, which was noisy during the evening though not at night. Pros: Wonderful decor & old world charm, location, Driftwood Room Cons: Inexperienced staff, parking more

$$$ went to decor, not room size 9/1/2006

This year for our anniversary my husband and I opted to stay with the Hotel DeLuxe. We made reservations on-line and selected the King Deluxe room (there are 2 King room selections, we chose the less-expensive option). The hotel has a great location - very easy to find - but only has valet parking for $19.00 + tip, per day (even though their parking lot is literally right across the street). The valet service was incredibly professional and did make us feel very spoiled and I have to say each time we asked for the car, it was ready and waiting for us downstairs. Nevertheless, if you plan to drive anywhere it gets a little expensive in tips to retrieve and then release your car. Check-in was great - very smooth and easy. we were done in 5 minutes, and the lobby really is wonderfully decorated and very elegant. The main level hotel decor is beautiful, just what the website advertises. The elevators are security controlled and you have to use your room card to operate them, very safe. We were so excited to see our room after all of this warm-up but when we opened the door......it was SO small. The King size bed took up the entire room! And the bathroom was so tiny that you could not open the door all the way without hitting the toilet and forget about having 2 people in the bathroom together. You could barely stand in front of the pedestal (read: no counter space) sink because of the bathtub right behind you and there was no fan to get rid of the shower steam. The fixtures were fabulous though - a huge rainshower shower head and lovely Restoration Hardware-looking silver faucets and knobs. Really beautiful. The HDTV was fun to watch, the IPOD station was a nice touch too, and the bed was clean and very cozy. However, we just felt that the room was too cramped, under-decorated and too expensive ($179.00) for what you receive. We had much better luck (and a much LARGER room) at 5th Avenue Suites, which is where we will stay next year. Pros: Gorgeous decor, very courteous staff, nice location Cons: Small room, tiny bathroom, valet only parking more

The Perfect Weekend! 6/3/2006

I came into Portland for a romantic weekend with my husband. We were fans of the old Mallory hotel, but were interested to see the changes made. Nothing prepared us for the wonderful experience we had! The decor is absolutely beautiful - it is elegant, old Hollywood glam. Upon arrival we were treated graciously by the valet staff, and the wonderful people at the desk treated us like VIPs, arranging reservations at our favorite restaurant even though they were booked, escorting us to the elevators, and sending up a bottle of champaigne compliments of the house... we felt like royalty! Prior to dinner we had cocktails at the Driftwood, and then wandered the halls to see the many black and white Hollywood photographs adorning the walls. From checkin to checkout we encountered only the best service. It was perfect weekend, and we plan on returning! Pros: atmosphere!, location, amenities Cons: bathtub slippery! more

A very satisfied guest 6/3/2006

I really enjoyed my stay at the hotel deluxe. The renavation was absolutly beautiful..... My family and i have been long time mallory guests and we were all very satisfied with the freindly staff and the entire hotel. It was the best i slept in a long time. Pros: friendly staff, comfy beds, great resaurant more

Great Renovation! 6/2/2006

Wow! I completley disagree with the below review. The Mallory was part of Portland's history, but deffinatley needed a face lift. Hotel deLuxe kept the best of The Mallory - gold gilding, chandeliers, Driftwood (which is now nonsmoking) - but brought the hotel into the 21st century. The theme is the Hollywood golden era, with a giant video wall in the lobby, 40s style furniture and black and whites of actors/directors from that era. The room I stayed in had beautiful gold/teal drapes, giant pale yellow headboard (the coolest headboard I've ever seen), flat screen tv, ihome with ipod menu, spiritual menu - which I'd never seen before but gives a choice of religous reading materials, and the most comfortable bed. The staff was excellent, and the food in the dining room was delicious. I have no hesitation that the deLuxe is my hotel of choice when staying in Portland! Pros: Decor, Amazing Staff, Location more
