We always have to stop by HopKee when in NYC. Its in Chinatown a little cozy place. The food is awesome! I always order the sweet and sour chicken which is always great. The amount of food which is given is generous, good enough for dinner and lunch for the next day. The service is good. The same people have been working there forever! At times it is hard to get the waiters attention due to the amount of people but its nothing too bad. If ever in Chinatown definately give this place a try you will keep coming back, trust me! more

Historical Chinese Restaurant 9/26/2010

Hop Kee is one of the oldest Cantonese restaurants in Chinatown. It is full of history and many famous people have dined here. The food is quite good. They have two versions of menus. One is for Chinese people and the other is a modified version for non-Chinese. I personally think the menu is lacking and the American menu is quite a sellout. Overall though, I really like their beef chow fun. However, I was not so thrilled with the service or the sanitary condition of this restaurants. more

GREAT FOOD BEST SERVICE! 2/6/2009

My family and freinds go to Hop Kee whenever we are in Chinatown. The food is authentic and very well prepared. The lobster here is great, along with the fried flounder. 10 of my freinds and I just went there and got 8 different dishes that all were great- clams in black bean sauce is a must! The service is very efficient. The waiters here are very freindly and always available to serve you. If you go to Chinatown you must experience one the best restaurants there. You will not regret it!!! Pros: GREAT FOOD AND SERVICE more

The real deal....hands down ! 4/24/2008

I am a 30+ year patron here at this dirty ,dingy, loud, filthy bathroom, simple decor, cash only basement hole in the wall ! And the simple truth be told ....I would not like it any other way. ...It is the most authentic Cantonese food you will ever eat ! The atmosphere just adds to the authenticity. It Makes you feel like you are in China. And for all you critics , I did not come here to sit in the dirty bathroom .....I come for the food. If you like you can run back up the stairs and p down along that little narrow side street. When ever I'm back in town from Arizona...It's my first stop ,at any hour ! It is a religious experience. We start off with steamed dumplings and a nice wanton/egg drop mix, then onto chinese steak/broccoli , peking pork chops , spicy beef chow fun,and salted squid w/hot pepper...sometimes for dessert ....we order more dumplings and another plate of squid ! Can't help it ....the taste is so outrageous ! I think you still can bring your own wine ! To all you yuppy & wanna be cultured conesures.....Stay Home , You'll make the wait and lines shorter .This place is to real for you anyway, prices are low and they don't build pyarmids out of sweet potato fries. I come from a large Italian family in which food is life ! We live to eat ! We Know good food ! I grew up In NY and ate here at least once a month . Afterwards we would walk down the block to go play ""Tic Tac Toe"" with the chicken. If anyone remembers that arcade, Darn Chicken always won ! I don't know if it's still there ! My opinion : There isn't anything that can compare ! Enjoy more

It jumped the shark; the food was bland 2/17/2008

I've dined at Hop Kee about 6 times over a 20 year period. When my family dined there this week, the food was very bland. We ordered the cashew chicken and the Chinese crispy chicken. There was no flavor to either of them. The waiter did provide hot sause, but that still could not rescue the flavor nor could adding salt. Years ago the place was much better. The best way to describe the atmosphere and attitude is indifferent. The service was OK, but the uniforms were the same as 20 years ago and some looked very faded and weathered. The floors looked a little old and appeared to not have been recently cleaned. The bathroom also seemed that way. The low rating is because there are thousands of great restaurants to choose from in New York and the bar should be raised higher. Pros: Service was ok; fortune cookie, tea and water were good Cons: Food was bland; Atmosphere was non-existant; Floors appeared dirty more

Hop Kee's is the BEST!!! 4/29/2007

I've been to Hop Kee's for about 30 years now! The food is forever amazing! My faves are the shrimp w/ walnuts, fried or peking porkchops and flounder with veggies. The service is wonderful, waiters are friendly, funny and attentive. The bathroom is not that bad. I grew up in Chinatown and from all the other rest I go to, I would have to say Hop Kee's bathroom is by far one of the cleanest. Does anyone remember the dim sum place upstairs from Hop Kee - Sun Hop Sing??? Do you recall their bathrooms..UGH! Anyways, ambiance is not great, but its simple and clean, it could be worse. I took my date here for a first date and now, my husband loves their food more than I do LOL! The only bummer is parking in Chinatown esp on the weekend, but even so, it's worth it. This place is a cash only basis, no checks or credit cards. But their prices are really reasonable and you get a lot of yummy food. You definately get your moneys worth here at Hop Kee's! Just remember to call and make a reservation for a party or 6 or more or the wait can get a little crazy. Oh, another thing to try is the minced beef with peas over rice with an over easy egg on top, once you break the egg and the yolk melts onto the rice and beef, you mix it up and enjoy, the best thing on earth!!!! Pros: Delicious food, great service, reasonable px Cons: They don't deliver =( more

Dinner was decent until.... 3/2/2007

I have never reviewed a restaurant on CS before, but my experience at Hop Kee last night compelled me to do so. My friend and I had just finished eating. She had shrimp in lobster sauce, I had veggie lo mein. We were both pretty happy with our meal and about to pay the check when a girl at the table next to us flew to the other side of the restaurant because a WATERBUG the size of a DINOSAUR had just landed on the table in front of her. The waiter came over and squashed it, then acted v nonchalont as if this was completely normal. The nice thing to do would have been to comp everyone's dinner or something, but the entire staff just ignored the whole incident and stared at the ceiling (where the creature came from) wonderingly. Maybe they did something for the people whose table it landed on. Anyway, I felt sick for the rest of the night and will not be returning to this restaurant. Pros: Fast service, inexpensive Cons: Hardly any vegetable dishes, velociraptors dropping in, zero decor, soda served in cans more

Real good Asian cuisine.... 6/13/2006

Great food served quickly. Went with a bunch of co-workers and ordered a sampling of everything. Calamari and pork dishes were fantastic! Had loads of food for 8 people and only spent around $100 total. Need I say more? more
