Best bar in Houston 9/22/2009

Not as bad as some reviews imply 12/21/2008

I've been to the Harp several times over the years and have had a great time. Never an issue with the bartenders. Never an issue with cleanliness. I happen to own a bar in Houston, and I have zero complaints about The Harp. Its a cool place. Pros: its a chill place Cons: parking more

EWWWW 12/8/2008

OMG, how is this place a legit business. It's filthy, the staff is on something, my girlfriend and I were followed into the restroom by a man 30 yrs older than us, giving us dirty looks and mumbling under his breath. This place is a sh*thole that attracts dirty sleazy married men looking to pick up girls. I took a long shower as soon as I left. Pros: Can't think of any Cons: EVERYTHING more

Great and Off the Beaten Path! 7/23/2008

I went in here once to meet up with a friend of mine, who regularly frequents. The patrons were extremely friendly as was the bar staff. The waitress was very attentive, and frequently came by to collect glasses. I was only served in clean glasses. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for something a little of the beaten path. Also, if you insist on writing a review please ensure your spelling and grammar are correct (bad-mouthers below). All internet explorer's have a built-in spell check feature. Slainte! Pros: Service with a smile, and not spending a fortune! Cons: Parking was a little tight. more

Don't let the competition fool you 7/14/2008

Hmm, three negative reviews in three days?!?!? This wouldn't be a coincerted effort by a nearby competitor to demean The Harp, would it??? Nice try, guys. The Harp is actually a really nice neighborhood irish pub - not a gimmicky one like the "nearby competitor." The owner is actually from Dublin, not north Houston. The staff is terrific and always friendly. And despite the slanderous comments, most of them don't even smoke as far as I can tell, much less do anything illegal. I have to admit, they did have a problem for a few weeks this spring with a broken sewer line that gave off a smell, but that's long been fixed. In case you couldn't tell, I'm very much a regular, and I love the place. It's friendly, with intelligent regulars and a real camaraderie. Don't let the concerted effort to smear the business fool you. This place gets great reviews (check the Houston Chronicle's review on chron.c0m) and is a real Irish pub. It doesn't just pretend to be Irish and it doesn't cater to minors - hence the folks coming online to badmouth it. Pros: The people and the location Cons: Parking more

forget this bar 7/4/2008

I went for 15 minutes last night and was not served until 15 minutes later in a very dirty glass by a coked up bartender. Is this what you call Irish pub in Houston God help you. more

what a pit of muck 7/1/2008

This is the most filthy disgusting bar I have EVER seen. The cleanliness likens a Mexican prison but worse. I cannot believe it is in business HEALTHY INSPECTORS must see. Cons: ewwwwwwwwww more

worse bar ever 6/30/2008

ARE you joking really people come here to drink. OK first its a completely disgusting hole that reeks of swage. Second most of the staff is hopped up on something and don't really give a d2mn if they serve you or not. The bar is filthy and the quality of character is non exsistant. So if you like dirty glasses and waisting time go see it. Pros: it may fall to the ground soon Cons: the whole thing more

Rude staff 8/1/2007

The staff here are rude and clique-y. If you aren't a regular you don't have a chance. I thought the trivia night on Tuesdays would be fun and it had potential except for the bad service and staff that look constantly irritated. more

Best Neighborhood Pub! 6/27/2007

Saw a couple of reviews talking about a dirty place. I can only guess these folks were in the wrong place or they're used to some stuck-up pub chain... This is a true neighborhood hang-out with great drinks, staff, and darts. Nothing fancy, just a lot of good times. 100's of regulars can't be wrong. Snobs beware, you will not like this place! Cheers - Slainte! Pros: Great staff and Cold Guiness Cons: Parking more

FILTHY!!!! 6/10/2007

Why I stopped into this place is beyond me. It looked dirty from the outside and only got worse when I entered. I hoped to relax somewhere more quiet than my usual haunts. I was pleased to find that they are extremely gay friendly, but my type wouldn't be caught dead in this place. Dirty, dirty, dirty from the floor to the ceiling. The staff is really sweet, just not really tidy. Pros: gay friendly, easy to cruise Cons: parking, selection, dirty more

SCUZZY!!! 5/2/2007

This place used to be nice, but has gone down hill...too many drunks (watch that your car doesn't get slammed by someone who's a few too many), and illegal poker games - Oh yes!! I have seen much money exchanged. But, that's okay, maybe the owner can pay for it with the Coke sells in the bathroom - YUCK! Also, VERY SMOKY...what happened to this pub???!!! Cons: Too smoky. Dangerous for girls. more

Great local bar 11/20/2006

Anywhere that serves draft Harp Lager is well on the way to greatness. I used to live down the street loved it. Friendly staff, nice customers casual atmosphere, outdoor patio, parking can be an issue. Music sometimes too loud but i'm getting old. They used to have folk singing on the patio not sure anymore but hope not for all your sakes. Don't recall any food? Pros: Draft Harp and Guiness get staff great customers Cons: parking, folk music (at least in the past) more

cool feeling 1/8/2005

this place makes you feel good. Good atmoshpere, vibes. Not fancy, somewhat clean...good patio! Decklin is super!!!!!!!! He makes us all smile:) Pros: beer, staff more

!! 3/16/2004

You would think a place like The Harp (small, slightly hidden even, bar with many local competitors) would be average in every way, but once you're inside that changes. Most admirable is how the service, even when busy, will still find you and your party and keep you happy. It is also an excellent place to go for afternoon lounging and their patio is the best around for relaxing. You have to try it at least once. Pros: Atmosphere, Service Cons: , Parking, No specials more

Comfortable and Fun 9/4/2003

don't mind the rips on the sofa, and oh do pull up another chair! Play some darts (bring your own darts), or choose something from the wonderfully eclectic Jukebox. Don't look for chic or fabulous here. Look for comfort, a warm welcome and a cool pint. Pros: Comfy, Jukebox selection Cons: parking bites more

the harp 8/7/2003

thank your lucky stars the harp has brought a cozy, casual pub inside the loop. i usually have to go to ireland for one. i'm glad it is not like the "cookie cutter clone" pubs sprouting up around houston. (downtown and in rice village, for example). i love to get there early to unwind or late to party!!! i hope it sticks around! Pros: cozy, great patio, nice, clean bathrooms Cons: no bar food more

The Harp is true music to pub lovers. 9/26/2002

The Harp is a happenin' place. Lots of good friends, great couches, and some of the coldest beer around served by the best staff in the city. It never ceases to amaze me that Jeremy, Stephen, Brendan, Katherine, and the others seem to know what you'll be drinking before you do. Wednesday dart night is a serious affair with league competition from all over the city. The music on Fridays is always awesome, since the setup is at foor level right by the door. 2-3 musicians having a great time and so will you. more

  • The Scene
Ask the bartender if he serves Guinness and he answers with a mixture of pride and impatience: "And why wouldn't we?" After all, this is an Irish pub, isn't it? Well, yes and no. There's no denying the proprietor's Dublin heritage, Gaelic signs on the wall and libations such as Guinness, Harp, Jameson's and Bushmill's. But for many patrons, it's just a neighborhood hangout where Jimi Hendrix on the jukebox vies for attention with the big game on TV. Those Irish trappings are, at best, an afterthought.

    The Draw
Dimly lit and comfortable, The Harp is a renovated brick home with a medium-sized bar in a large room with chairs and tables. Not fancy, but serviceable. Outside, a post-and-rail fence turns the front yard into a corral with a herd of tables for those who want to drink and pretend Richmond Avenue is the River Liffy in Dublin.
