An interesting look into industrialism 2/28/2006

Frankly, when my best friend offered to take me to visit the Hagley Museum, I was a bit skeptical--I heard they were all about gunpowder, and that's not one of my biggest interests. However, after spending the day there--I had a great time! I learned a lot about gunpowder production for sure--but also about the way life worked back in those days on the DuPont facility. It really was a very interesting trip--I'd highly recommend it. One tip though--wear comfy shoes! It's a lot of walking. more

An Explosive Museum 2/16/2006

Hagley Museum and Library, is according to their advertising, "where the Dupont story began." Hagley is both a living history museum for the Dupont gunpowder mills and also an exploration into both advertising and business history. The Hagley Library is one of the world's best business history libraries, housing the files of Avon, Seagrams, and of course, Dupont. The estate is absolutely beautiful in the spring and fall; I guarantee your family will spend an exhausting entire day walking around the grounds and learning about life along the Brandywine River. more

Picturesque History 2/8/2006

Hagley, a standard field trip location for Delaware school children, is very interesting for grown-ups, too. The extensive grounds were the planned community of DuPont's gunpowder mills. Reenacters inhabit some of the remaining homes. There's a nice little restaurant for a good lunch or snack. Plenty of trails to walk along the beautiful Brandywine River. Inexpensive admission. Worth a visit! more
