Be Very Wary 5/26/2011

I wouldn't adopt from this place if they GAVE me the dog. I tried to adopt a dog there - they told me that they were holding her for someone else. Then a week later they called me and said they had another dog I might be interested in. I live an hour away and told them i would be there within two hours. I loaded up my dog to take her to meet the new dog. By the time I got there - she had been adopted - 20 minutes before I arrived. They then told me - sorry but we can't hold dogs. BULLSHIT. They held a dog for someone else and flat out admitted it to me. Also - my daughter adopted a cat who had a parasite back in 2007 and had never been treated for it. She just adopted the cat recently. Also they gave her a certificate for a free pet exam which she was to take to our vet. That "free" exam ended up costing her $70. Think twice before using this particular organization. I'm all for rescuing dogs and have adopted from 3 other humane societies in other states. Never had issues like this. I'll drive to San Antonio and adopt a dog before going back to Gulf Coast. more

Horrible Policies 10/25/2010

I spent two hours at GCHS looking for the right dog to adopt. It was a hard choice because all of the dogs wer adoptable and cute. I did notice that many of the dogs have been there a long time and couldn't figure it out. When my wife and I finally found the perfect dog and filled out the application and agreed to the $150.00 fee, we were surprised to hear that we were denied because we listed that the dog would be kept outside in our large, fenced backyard. I explained that we love our dogs ( we already own 1 registered lab), and that we spend a lot of time going to the beach, river or the ranch with our dogs every weekend and they said that they will only allow adoptions to dogs who will be kept inside as per the " Director". I immediately realized that this must be the reason why so many dogs have been in the shelter for so long. We have a huge yard, a loving home and 1 happy dog. I can't imagine any of their dogs being in a better condition in their kennels than with our family in our big backyard and road trips to the outdoors every weekend with the family! Absolutely ridiculos policy. I have donated money to the Humane Society throughout the years and believe in their mission but I won't give them another penny. On another note, I did not get to meet or speak with the "Director" but the facilities were very nice and the staff was very professional. I jar wish they wouldn't have wasted my time and advised of the policy as soon as I expressed an interest of adopting from them. We would have given that dig a great home, Shame on the GCHS! more

Dissapointed! 4/2/2010

Because I've done volunteer work @ GCHS in the past, when we finally decided to adopt a pet, we went there. It was a great experience until we got to the adoption process. We were rejected because on the application, we stated our intention of keeping the dog outdoors, in a fenced yard. After some discussion we agreed to keep the dog in the laundry room, but even that wasn't acceptable. The adoption fee of $150 isn't cheap, but we were prepared to pay, as we know it supports the funding for care of the animals. I understand they want the best for their animals, but not every dog is best suited for indoor life. What a shame. more

Looking for a new pet... 7/23/2005

If you are looking for a new pet, this is the place to stop by first. The Gulf Coast Humane Society is a perfect place to adopt a puppy or a full-grown puppy (dog). There is quite a selection from over 300 homeless dogs and cats that are desperately in need of caring and loving homes. more
