Overrated and overpriced 2/14/2009

I came here expecting that San Francisco + Vegetarian would = excellent, creative cuisine. I left overstuffed with starches (even though among our party of four we shared four entrees) and distinctly underwhelmed. More than anything I was disappointed by the unmet potential. more

Greens 5/19/2006

Who put the romance into vegetarian food? Greens did! Sitting by the water, with one of the most fantastic views in the city. I like Greens especially because it’s not vegan, it’s not raw food. Seems like every other place is one of these extremes, but they don’t go there. Which means they have CHEESE. Mmmmmm… cheese goes so well with vegetables. Especially when everything is super fancy prepared to perfection like it is here. I wish I knew someone who could afford to take me here more often. more

The Original Vegetarian Restaurant 4/16/2006

Greens is the original vegetarian restaurant located by the water in San Francisco. The chefs at the restaurant, Deborah Madison and Anne Sommerville, have both put out cookbooks bearing the Greens name. The food there is fantastic, designed to take advantage of the local produce. There is a place to pick up ready made foods, but on the weekends they serve fixed price menus. The restaurant can be hard to find, as it was for us in the rain, but once inside it is very beautiful and romantic. The restaurant is dimly lit and floor to ceiling windows that look out into the bay. This is a vegetarian restaurant that non-vegetarians can enjoy. more

Lives up to the hype 3/19/2006

This is one that won't disappoint. As possibly SF's most famous vegetarian restaurant, and at about $60 a person for dinner, drinks and dessert, I was all set to be disappointed. The view alone was almost worth it -- one entire wall of the restaurant is a floor-to-ceiling picture window with an amazing view of the Bay and the Golden Gate. Then they served our meal and I understood why this SF institution is popular with both veggies and meat eaters alike. The entrees are flavorful, inspired and carefully prepared. The menu changes regularly to accomodate fresh, seasonal ingredients and the wine list is solid. Reservations are definitely a good idea. more

Greens: scrumptious vegetarian cuisine 2/27/2006

A classy and delicious vegetarian restaurant that will leave even the most committed carnivore satisfied. Greens serves a wide variety of vegetarian dishes, including pasta, salads, pizza, and curry dishes. Everything on the menu is thoughtfully prepared and artfully presented. Sunday brunch is a real treat, and the dessert is not to be missed. Greens has an exquisite location on the San Francisco waterfront, with lovely views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the marina. more
