Good Show Bad Food 11/16/2006

Me and my girlfriend went there for our anniversary. We were seated right away and eveyone was going fine until the food came. The salad came from a pre made bag of salad. I got the chicken parmigian and it was gross, the sauce was nasty, and the noodles were disgusting. The only thing that was good about this place was the show. We saw i love you your perfect now change. I laughed the whole way through, but this could not really cover up for the food. It says on the website that the show costs 23 dollars and the meal is 14, but i dont even think the meal was worthy of costing 14 dollars. And the dessert i got the ebony and ivory and it was freaking chocolate mousse and whip cream and it tasted like it was 10 years old. I am never going back there it was not worth over 90 dollars for two people, and that is without any alcohol. Pros: The Show Cons: The Food more

Awesome. Hands down the most fun I've even had in a long time. If you're looking for a place to take your special someone, this is it. It's a good way to just relax, not have to worry about rushing places, but just chill for a few hours and be entertained. The waitstaff was great, on top of everything and very nice. The play was killer too. I didnt expect the acting to be that god, but it was seriously like something you would see in New York. Some may say it's pricey, but in my opinon, it's well worth it. You definitely get what you pay for with this place. I will definitely go there again in the future. If you havent been, go. There's no place like it. Guys, you may even like it. But if not, you can still go and build up some points. Pros: Romantic, Good Food, Entertaining more

Moderate expecations---nightmare fulfilled 5/15/2006

After searching for something ""new and different"", I resolved to try The Great Caruso. I was extremely excited about our reservation since the venue combines two of my favorite hobbies---entertainment and dining. I was immediately diappointed by rude, curt waitstaff, late arriving actors, and an inedible dish. An attempt to resolve the issues resulted in a rather comical exchange between the manager and myself as he attempted to loudly suggest that I pardon the experience since the Mother's Day rush often results in poor service at other venues around the city. I tactfully reminded him that I chose to dine at The Great Caruso---not other restaurants around the city--and that I was looking forward to at least a minimum level of service/entertainment. Since The ""Great' Caruso is the only dinner theatre in Houston, I strongly suggest that you go to dinner ANYWHERE else and then head toward AMC. more

Great Night Out or Special Occasion 4/23/2006

BWT - Very entertaining and certainly a nice way to celebrate a special occasion. The cost is about $60 per person with a glass of wine. We had the table from 8:30 to 11:45pm, quite a long time. The food was pretty good, but we really enjoyed the entertainment. Not Broadway only one place is, but very entertaining an obviously professionally done. My wife and I decided for this because we didn't have to rush through dinner to get to the theater...we were already there. Wonderfully entertaining 8/3/2005

I have been coming to this dinner theatre for the last 6 years or so. I just love this place. The inside of this average looking building is beautifully enchanting. Really, the atmosphere alone transports you to another place! Everytime that I've been here, the staff has been very courteous and friendly. However, I wish that they would improve their cuisine. Actually I don't think that you can call their food, ""cuisine"". It's exceptionally horrible. The last few times I ordered the food so I could enjoy the whole experience, but from now on I'll just stick to cocktails. I'd actually prefer to eat fast food over this stuff. The fantastic shows keep me coming back time and time again though. I've never been disappointed by a show and I doubt that will ever happen! Have an early dinner and then come here for after dinner drinks and a fantastic performance. more

If you get past Mr. Friendly (NOT) Its not all THAT bad...The Reservationist/Host has a people skills problem....ANYway.....food...Ok, Service...below average, entertainment GREAT!..not exactly Broadway as they claim...but good for Dinner Theater fare...17% tip on entire evening......unacceptable!..you can't do that!..and I found out that the singers don't see any of it!......OVERALL...worth one visit! but be careful... anything extra.....you tip 17% and you could loose your paycheck! Will Definitely Be Back 3/11/2005

What a fantastic time. We went and saw the Doo-Wop show and I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. The acts were hysterical and my friend and I had such a great time. They had cupid in this huge diaper and oh, you'll have to see it. We can't wait to see what show is next! more

Worst Night Ever 11/29/2004

Dinner at Caruso was the worst dining experience I have had since moving to Texas. The Christmas show was dated and not entertaining, the food was not edible and the price was unbelievably high. I had friends from out of town with my family included 7. Dinner with no drinks and nothing extra was almost $400. What an embarrasment to Houston entertainment . . .trust me on this one, STAY AWAY! Awful! Don't waste your $ 11/20/2004

We saw the 11/20 showing of Footloose. The host was so rude we almost left before the show. The waiter was nice and attentive,but never brought my change. Food was decent. Show was awful. Couldn't hear the singers over the music. Costumes were clothes from the actors closets. Mediocre acting, singing and dancing. The only ones that were good were the actors that played Willard and Chuck/cowboy bob. One of the extra dancers( female) looked constipated with the cheesy faces she kept making. Pros: Unique, decent food, location Cons: , Bad performers, Hard to see more

ENCHANTING 12/5/2003

We went there to celebrate a birthdate, we had a wonderful time, the food was very good, the initial crackers with caviar were so delightful we had seconds. The veal picata was very tasty and well done. The show was so lovely, so classy, and so entertaining. It was the Christmas show and the performers were all too professionals and most excellent. The only part we did not appreciate was when the salvation army came by to collect donations; I thought that lacked a bit of class. Otherwise it was a delightful experience. high school performance 5/22/2003

The food was average, which was not a good start to the evening. The tables were cramped. The performance was high school caliber at best. Very unimpressive, especially for the money. With dinner, wine, tip, and show it was $60 dollars per person. more

GREAT MUSICAL! 1/28/2003

My wife and I really enjoyed the musical, Ain't Misbehavin'! I have seen nothing better or more professional in Houston. There was a full band onstage and incredibly talented performers. Being able to sit comfortably and have dinner while watching the musical sure beats sitting upright in an uncomfortable theater seat. We have told all our friends. And what a beautiful place! Put me in the holiday spirit! 12/12/2002

The spectacular decor, the thousands of Christmas lights and the cheerfull waitstaff immediately put me and my guests into that warm, wonderful holiday mood. When our meal arrived we were all shocked at the quality. Two of us had the fish (salmon) and we thought it was the best we ever had. The Christmas show with singers and dancers performing non-stop made this experience also the best value! Can't wait for their next show. more

Beautiful place. Beautiful decor. Wonderful food. Great Entertainment. I have been to no other place in Houston, or anywhere else for that matter, with such a combination. I spend a lot more elsewhere for just dinner in a cold atmosphere and so-called gourmet food. The Great Caruso has it all! And my eight year old daughter loved it, too. The Worst! 12/9/2002

How does this place stay open? After reading all of the rave reviews, we went to the Xmas show to try it out. Are they kidding? We kept waiting for the show to start only to find, much to our horror, ... it already had! No costumes, no sets, no dancing! Just four women taking turns singing (or trying to sing) Christmas songs while this other buffoon clomped around on stage! And bad food to boot! ""The three words that best describe it are as follows, and I quote...STINK, STANK...STUNK!!"" Pros: HUH? Cons: EVERYTHING! more

Horrible. 12/5/2002

I can't believe the other reviews. A group of us went for a girls' night out and everyone was in agreement - this was absolutely the worst dining/ entertainment experience we've ever had. The food was bad and the ""entertainment"" was a joke. This was supposed to be a Christmas show. Four women in everyday clothes on a small stage with no scenery took turns trying to sing. Most of them couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. There was one ""dancer"" that most of the audience laughed at because she was so ridiculously inept. It was comparable to a bad grade-school performance, only worse! This is definitely not Broadway quality - as is advertised - and not worth $50.00 a person ! Stay away ! Pros: NONE! If you love seeing live performances and eating great food than Great Caruso is deffinately the place to go. The food was Wonderful, the show was Wonderful, the staff was Wonder, the atmoshpere was Wonderful, the whole experiance was Wonderful! Houston needs more places like this around.
