If you cook your own steak and make your own bread, why is it so expensive? I can go to Outback and get better food, service, and ambience. Best of all, if the steak isn't right...

Great Steak at Grate Steak 10/26/2011

Steak is delicious. It is one of my favorite food. When I'm craving for steak, I just go to Grate Steak. The restaurant is not a typical steak restaurant. If you want to eat steak there, you have to cook the steak yourself. Cooking the steak yourself is fun and challenging. I loved it! That's where I learned how to cook steak perfectly. The restaurant doesn't only provide sumptuous steak but it does offer exceptional customer service as well. Grate Steak has great steak! more

Order the steak! 1/23/2008

Don't order the brioled seafood platter - it's a STEAK place! Cook it yourself over real charcoal. If you order from the kitchen it's cooked over gas - still good but not the same. I loved this restaurant! Pros: Charcoal Price Steak more

The Grate Steak is not always great. 5/27/2006

Have eaten here many times over the years, including at its former location, and find I enjoy it less each time. I find cooking my own steak tedious, and having asthma, the smoke in the grill room only aggravates it. Quality of service has deteriorated over the years, on my last visit our waitress was too busy visiting with her friends at a nearby table to wait on us, we had to wait over 30 minutes after our meal just to get the check, even after asking another waitress to send ours over. The decor is also appearing aged and tired. I find the value poor, as the steaks are overpriced for ""do-it-yourself"" cooking. If I never eat there again, I dont believe I'll miss it. Pros: salad bar , lots of space, kid friendly Cons: aged decor, value, service more

Never again 1/4/2006

If you cook your own steak and make your own bread, why is it so expensive? I can go to Outback and get better food, service, and ambience. Best of all, if the steak isn't right I can send it back. I made the mistake of getting a thick steak and watched those with me sitting at the table while I sweat in the grill room. I can sweat in my backyard where the beer and snacks are cheaper. Pros: fresh meat, free refills Cons: sweating, whoops I overcooked, chicken was horrible more

User review by haireball19 6/5/2005

Good concept but not very good cuts of meat. The steaks are loaded with fat. If you want to go out to eat and cook your own food, go for it. I usually go out to eat so that my meal can be prepared for me. more

Steak Time 3/8/2005

Nice cuts of Meat with a nice Salad Bar. You will leave there full and satisfied. Have eaten there a dozen times or more and continue to go on a limited basis. Being able to pick your steak is a nice feature. But cooking it youself for more or same price as some upscale restaraunts just amazes me. You don't go there for the value. I have tried letting them cook but it returns dry and/or overcooked. (They want you to cook). Pros: Casual, Location (access), Plenty of Seating Cons: Pricey, Slow at times more

Best Ever 3/7/2004

I was in the Navy stationed in Norfolk in 1987. That was the year of my first encounter with this Grate restaurant. I shipped out in 1988 for the ship yards. My enlistment was up in 1989 and I moved back to Daytona Beach. Since then, I have visited that restaurant at least 4 times a year. All of my visits have been drive up, on a Friday, eat dinner Saturday and drive back Sunday. Thank you for such a GREAT place. Pros: Fantastic Steaks, Salad Bar, Cold Beer Cons: , Long Waits more

Awesome 1/21/2004

If you are looking for a place to have a great steak, this is it! Just as an FYI ... if you don't want to cook your own steak, they will cook it for you. The restaurant is very kid friendly and the food is spectacular. You can cook up your own texas toast right on the grill and have all of the salad that you want form the bar. This is an excellent place to relax and have a wonderful meal! Highly recommended! more

not thrilled 9/4/2003

with cooking my own steak. If i wanted to smell like smoke id go home and cook over my own grill. If i overcook the meat by accident i know i didnt spend $20.00 on the steak. Salad bar is very nice. more

Stay Home and Save Money 8/23/2003

What a joke!! While husband in Navy we lived about 2 miles from this place....it was always voted to be best in town......we could not believe you had to cook your own meal!!! If I wanted to cook I would have stayed home, bought my own steaks and saved about $25! When we asked were there any items they would cook we were handed a very limited menu by a very rude waitress then it took her over 15 minutes to come back to take our order. When order arrived the portions were small and meat was cold.....never went back! Pros: parking Cons: have to cook own food, lousy service, noisy more

grate steak 2/27/2003

Worst place to eat. Waited 30 for a drink refill. Was not worth the money I spent! Will not EVER eat there AGAIN! Cons: bad service more

Grate is GREAT! 2/8/2003

It is like a Summer Cookout everyday. You're your own cook. There is no place like the Grate Steak. Kids enjoy cooking and so do the adults. And the only one you can complain to about the doneness of the steak is you. more

My kids love it too! 2/4/2003

It's the uniqueness of this restaurant that makes it great. For those of you who don't know there are three of these, one in Hampton, one in Norfolk, and I think the third one is in Chesapeake. I've been to the one in Norfolk but the one in Hampton is my favorite. You will really like it if you are a people person because you can stand around the grill and meet the other patrons. The great thing is you get to see your cut of meat before you get it. One tip, I found the smaller cuts of meat to be leaner. Pros: portions, unique, charcoal taste Cons: only in virginia more

Norfolk native far from home 1/11/2003

The Grate Steak is my favorite place for steak outside of my backyard. I moved out of state 1 1/2 years ago, but whenever I get back to town I make the time to stop for dinner. It's the best salad bar in town and the marinated button mushrooms are fantastic. Pros: quality of steaks, unique experience Cons: reserv. for 6+ only more

Absolutely GRATE! 1/3/2003

I love the chance to cook my steak the way I want to! Plus the salad bar has a good assortment of items. more

Give me the fresh beast 12/15/2002

This place is grate! Go with a group of friends, pick out the steak from the case (owner's cut) and have a blast. Did I mention all-you-can-eat salad and potato bar? There is also an option to have your food prepared and cooked in the kitchen. Looking for something different? Give it a try! Pros: Tons of food, Atmosphere Cons: parking lot (Hampton), Hours of operation more

Gimme a smoke 10/24/2002

Just had the hickory smoked steak.....best steak I have ever eaten. Better than sex and there was no mess to clean up. Pros: Great Salad Bar, Great Dinner, Great Service Cons: Small parking lot, Expensive more

Why the Grate Steak is the best Steak 10/7/2002

At the Grate Steak you can get 4 different sizes of the same cuts and have the option to cook it yourself on their huge indoor charcoal grill or have them cook it for you in the kitchen. They also have all you can eat salad bar, garlic bread, and a baked potatoe bar. My favorite meal there is the marinated top sirloin in the restaruant cut size. This is a 16 to 18 oz steak with eveything I mentioned for around $14.00. I love being able to grab my beer and head to the grill with my friends. And sit and cook our steaks over live charcoal to get them exactly how we want them while socializing. By the grill they always have melted butter, garlic powder, and seasoned salt to put on your steaks and bread also. Eating there is a highlight to every trip to Norfolk. more

Burning eyebrows 9/28/2002

The Grate Steak house has attained good steaks that you cook yourself, I found the grill to be very hot, and hard to cook without burning my face. I was surprised however, when I had to cook my own baked potato, and toast the bread on the same grill. I think I burned a half a loaf of bread before I got used to the hot grill. I found the service not up to par, I should have received better service for the price I paid to cook my dinner at the Grate Steak. Pros: Good Steaks, environment Cons: service, prices more

Grate Steak is Grate 9/16/2002

I thought the Grate Steak was a nice restaurant with wonderful atmosphere. I liked being able to choose and cook your steak. Pros: good food, good parking, nice atmosphere Cons: a little expensive more
