A failed attempt at the Argentine bakery experience 2/14/2008

I went there twice and was appalled by the whole experience. Having lived in Argentina many years, I thought that Grand Casino embodied all that makes Argentine bakeries so special. However, this is not the case. The place is a mess. No care has been taken in creating a warm atmosphere. Tables and chairs are mismatched, the lighting is of a hospital white hue and the place feels utterly cold. Their food is tasteless. Their empanadas are dry and stale. Their coffee is watered down and tastes of days past. To sum it up, be aware that this is NOT the true Argentine bakery experience. Look elsewhere. Many of LA's French bakeries resemble the Argentine taste better than this place. Grand Casino, give it up already! And let's hope someone opens a real bakery that celebrates the true spirit of Argentina. Pros: The location. Though it could be put to a better purpose. Cons: Just about everything. more

The only thing good about this place is the location. 9/20/2006

This place is a dive. First of all, you walk into this place and their menu is on multiple chalkboards behind the counter written with colored chalk. It is hard to read and trying to figure out what you want is confusing. There were five people behind the counter looking busy and yet we were the only people in this place. We ordered two turkey sandwiches and they were out of most of their breads. We paid and sat at a table with a number. The inside eating area is dirty, dingy and old. About a third of the room is what looks like the remnants of an old bar that is now used for storage and boxes. On every table were flowers that were dead. I mean wilted and turning brown dead! The old carpeted floor had crumbs everywhere and two tables were left in need of busing for the entire time we were there. The ceiling has this 1960s shaped piece attached to it with a large dingy mirror on one wall. While the food wasnt awful, it certainly wasnt anything to brag about. And they dont give refills on iced tea! On the good side, the location is great (along Main street in down Culver City) and at least the food was inexpensive. With so many good places to eat popping up all around downtown Culver City, my advice would be to avoid this place. Pros: Inexpensive Food Cons: Atmosphere more

good French bakery w/ Hispanic twist 1/29/2006

Love the Mexican Wedding Cookies (littly white balls), ""earthquake cookies"", big chocolate chip/nut cookies. Croissants are good too. Small cookies are good but expensive. Some things are different from a typical bakery because they are Argentine. Sidewalk cafe atmosphere. more

fantastic! 2/25/2003

This has become our favorite place for coffee, baked goods, and sandwiches. There is indoor and outdoor seating, which is especially nice since the restaurant is on Culver City's charming Main Street. They have an array of pastries, breads, cakes and cookies. The sandwiches and soups they have for lunch are quite tasty. My absolute favorite dessert is this one cake they always have available - it has a thick layer of light and creamy white meringue frosting, and inside there is moist yellow cake, peaches, and dulce de leche (caramel). It is the most amazing cake I've ever tasted, and a small one is only $3! Pros: inexpensive more
