Gotham bites the dust 7/3/2007

High rents and other financial problems have killed another great second-hand bookstore. Gotham locked its doors in May '07, though as of today (7/3/07), their website was still online, and the Village Voice implies some deal may be worked out to continue the business. more

Bibliophile's Paradise 8/16/2006

The old Gotham on W. 47th Street has relocated to this gorgeous, wood-paneled bookovers' sanctuary just a few blocks from Grand Central Station. The staff is very knowledgeable, the shop well-stocked with current volumes as well as gently-used and out-of-print books upstairs. On my last visit, one of the staff found what I was looking for, an early 19th-century English play -- this copy was from 1838 and was only $7.50! Who knows what treasure you might find? more

Good Mystery Books 10/30/2005

It's a very small shop but it has a lot of heart and character. Step inside the small basement store to find a great selection of used books, mostly mysteries and thrillers. The store is organized by category but they don't have too much room. So you will have to navigate very carefully. In the back they have a large selection of books from independent authors (zines, self publshed, that kind of thing). more

Gotham Bookmart 8/17/2005

I found this wonderful bookstore on my way to tracking one of my favorite authors, the late Edward Gorey. The location and homey feel of the Bookmart might have changed, but for access to a great selection of rare books and small press publications you can't do better than the Gotham Bookmart. I went in for my weekly fix of Gorey books and always seemed to find another author to fall in love with. I always feel like I'm in on some great New York secret. This is where you'll truly find book treasure and not have to be a millionaire to own a first printing. more

books 8/14/2005

well it is all true, barns and nobles and border are the biggest book seller in new york city. but is it only about the size. barns and nobles offer same day shipping and keep you with in few minutes from the book you wanted to buy. but what was happening to the small book shop. they need recognition too, and thats is why i decided to give some great reccomendation to gotham books mart. it is the traditional book shop holding the best of the best. use the knowladge of its stuff and you will not regrate it. this shop is an important asset to the city but to any old fashion books lover. keep buying so we will not have to see them leaving our city. more

Great Books 7/27/2005

Gotham Book Mart the home of Edward Gorey has moved from it's West Side Diamond District longtime home over to a new space off of Fifth Avenue. The new store looks great but the ramshackle mess of the old store was also charming in it's own way. This is the place to shop if you are interested in books that aren't currently on the New York Time's Bestseller's List even though they should be read. more

Great Book Store 7/8/2005

For 70+ years this store was located in the middle of the Diamond District and was a strange and mystical place. They carried the complete works of Edward Gorey before anyone else. They had a James Joyce Society that met upstairs. The place was redolent with the smell of musty paper and was crammed with New York literary history. Last year they sold the building and moved to new quarters. It's smaller, neater and much cleaner and more organized. That being said I miss the ramshackle feel of the old place but the new shop is still one of the best independent book stores in New York. more
