Best Chinese in Salt Lake Hands Down 9/29/2010

I have yet to order something that was not out of this world. The Walnut Beef and the Tangerine Chicken are fantastic. It is a good idea to eat in as the food is perfect when it is fresh. It works well with take-out and leftovers are very good, but it is best in the restaurant. more

BEST CHINESE FOOD!! 3/12/2008

TOP OF MY LIST FOR CHINESE FOOD. EVEN ABOVE THE ONES IN NEW YORK. THE CHICKEN IS ALWAYS WHITE MEAT WHICH IS A BIG DEAL TO ME. I LOVE THE TASTE OF ALMOST ALL THE DISHES. YOU MUST TRY FOR YOURSELF. Pros: GREAT FOOD Cons: WISH IT WAS SET UP A LITTLE DIFFERENT more

Delicious authentic Chinese Dining 11/27/2006

I would have never ventured into this unassuming little eatery on state street had it not been for the recommendation of some Chinese colleagues. I let them order, and had the most delicious Chinese dinner of my life. I recommend starting with the crab claw appetizer - it's a delightful combination of crab and (I think) shrimp meats stuffed into a crab claw and deep fried. The sweet sauce that is served with it provides a wonderful accent. Next, I recommend ordering the West Lake soup. It's a lot like eggdrop soup, except that it contains some pork and white mushroom. The main courses are wonderful, and I have many favorites, including salt baked pork (or salt baked anything, for that matter), fish cake, shrimp cakes, wallnut shrimp with white sauce, eggplant hotpot, and crab with ginger and scallion, to name a few. Tsingtao Chinese beer makes a wonderful accompanyment for all these meals. Each time I visit, the wait staff jokes that my orders get ""more authenticly Chinese"". Pros: Service, selection, courtesy of staff Cons: Can't think of any more

Tasty Business 10/23/2006

The Golden Phoenix offers some of the best Chinese Food in the city, particularly if the patrons are willing to break away from their comfort zone and order something off of the chef's specialties list. The family dinners are great for larger parties. I recommend the Dinner B plan that comes with wanton soup and ginger silver wrapped chicken. The service isn't always great, but it's never bad, and the food is tasty. Pros: Family dinner plans, tasty food, parking Cons: service is not always great, but it's never bad. more

Worth a visit 8/7/2006

I've been a few times. It was one of my favorites early on in my eating experiences. They do many chicken dishes well. Kung pao, Gen Chu as mentioned. Soups are decent. It's never very crowded in my experience.\r \r Just standard Americanized Chinese in the end. Worth trying. Pros: Competent Americanized Chinese Cons: No standout dish or special creativity more

Best Chinese Food Ever 7/26/2006

This place has the best Chinese food I've ever had. I'm not the best judge on autheniticity, but I do know that this place is very tasty. I have cravings for their Kung Pao chicken. Sweet and Sour chicken is excellent, all white meat. The lunch specials are a great value, tons of food for about $6. I love their egg rolls...and I don't usually like egg rolls.\r \r I almost always get my food take-out; I've dined inside twice. The atmosphere isn't anything to rave about, but it's clean and comfortable. The service was a little slow, but I ate at the busy lunch hour. I tried to ask the waitress some questions about a menu item, but I don't think she understood me very well. I want to try more of their dishes, but it's just too hard to say no to that Kung Pao chicken!\r \r I'll never eat Chinese anywhere else again. Pros: Food, Value, FOOD! Cons: Atmosphere, Service more

Great food 6/26/2003

The environment is somewhat modest, but after ordering, the food was delivered piping hot and fast. Rich taste, and excellent service make this a prime place to eat. During a relatively busy night we were able to get in and out faster than a fast food place with very reasonable prices. Pros: Service, Great Food, Inexpensive Cons: Modest Environment more

Gen Tso Chicken 5/19/2003

The Golden Phoenix is best for its meat dishes. Gen. Tso Chicken especially. The atmosphere isn't great but the dining is great for takeout. more
