THERES A REASON WHY ITS ALWAYS EMPTY WHEN YOU GO IN!!! 9/23/2010

You would expect a sushi restaurant to have customers there. When I went in, it was just my group and a few other people. I ordered the food and it tasted HORRIBLE! Like it was left there over night and was warm and dry. Normally I LOVE sushi but I cant even finish it. The service was slow and they seemed rude to me. DO NOT GO HERE!!!! EVEN DURING ALL YOU CAN EAT!!! TO ME, THEY'RE TRYING TO GET RID OF ALL THE BAD SUSHI BECAUSE OF IT. more

AYCE at your own risk! 1/18/2008

My friends and I felt really insulted and humiliated at this restaurant. Firstly, unless you are the type that can stuff yourself silly on whatever tasteless food that is brought in front of you, the AYCE option is not for you. The sushi portion was jumbo sized with thickly hacked slices of seafood over whale-sized mounds of stiff and cold rice. The sushi were mostly tasteless. As like many AYCE, you cannot expect perfection or high quality cuts. Afterall, it is all-u-can-eat. So, we decided we had enough of the stiff rice. We asked for our check. But instead of our waitress coming back with our check, the manager came running over to us as if she wants to prosecute us for the rice leftovers on our plates. We explained to her the sushi was not good and the rice was enormous and hard - definitely not freshly cooked rice. She was not the least bit apologetic and yelled at us for over-ordering. She gave us a lecture and sternly repeated their restaurant's policy where you must pay $3 for each piece of rice or fish that is leftover on your plate - no exceptions. It is ridiculous to think one can be at a restaurant where you are forced to eat something that you dislike or face surcharges and humiliation. This restaurant should have a disclaimer on their menu that reads, ""AYCE at your own risk. We are not responsible for tasteless nor not-so-fresh food, you must still finish it somehow or pay additional per piece surcharge."" We will never go back to Funayama again. Pros: Food came quickly Cons: Extremely rude service, tasteless sushi more

Great sushi @ great prices! 2/5/2007

I have eaten here many times and so have many of my family members and friends. We ALL absolutely love this place - and we eat a lot of sushi and have checked out many restaurants before. The price you pay for the quality and portion sizes for the fish is great! And service has always been excellent for me! Pros: Price and service! Cons: NONE! more

Best Cheap Sushi! 11/21/2006

This is my favourite cheap sushi place which I come to regularly. The quality is very good for the prices they charge and there is a high turnover so the food is always fresh. Try the special rolls, my favourite one is the dragon roll. more

Cheap all you can eat -- but you get what you pay for. 10/20/2006

They have all kinds of ""all you can eat"" specials, and even without a special, it's a lot of food cheap. But how do they afford that? They got to cut costs somewhere, and the quality suffers. The quality is on par with any other cheap asian food place; but who wants to eat sushi unless it's fresh? more

Huge portions, friendly staff 9/19/2006

I have eaten at Funayama over 30 times and the food is great. Its not NOBU but it is also about 1/20th the price. No frills for sure but for NY the quality-price factor is excellent. Keep your receipts or pay with cash though... the ownership has a habit of doctoring written receipt tip amounts to increase revenue. more

big yummy portions, very nice service 9/16/2006

I'm a happy semi-regular at Funayama. Huge fresh pieces of fish, two or three times the size I've seen at other places. Attentive but not intrusive service -- they do a good job of walking that fine line. I rarely get the AYCE, because the regular dinners usually fill me. When I'm really hungry, though, the AYCE is a great deal. The ambience is not bad, but it's a little plain. I agree with others that it could use a bit of upgrading. Pros: tasty, generous portions; good service; good value more

an amazing find 2/4/2006

I wandered into this place for the first time a couple weeks ago and have been spreading the word ever since. I don't know who had bad experiences there because every time I go the sushi is terrific, the service is attentive, and the bill is so low you walk out feeling like you pulled one over on New York. They could do a little work on the ambience department, but other then that the place couldn't be more money. If you live in the West Village and haven't tried this place yet you are missing something. more

Portion Control Impossible 10/22/2005

The rolls are big and beautiful, to the point where one can get full from a few bites. The service is pleasant and polite. There is an AYCE option here for the big eaters and for the small appetites go for the specialty rolls not offered. The place is a good size and a welcome addition to the village. Pros: Huge Portions, Service, Decor more

You gotta try this place!!!! 10/2/2005

My girlfriend and I just ate here for the first time. She is a sushi conesseur. I like it A LOT, but I'm still learning. WE BOTH LOVED FUNAYAMA!!! Go for the Mon. & Thurs. all you can eat... and come hungry. The sushi pieces are HUGE!! Eel is great. The waiter was cool and told us to take our time so we could get more out of the ""all you can eat."" Plus, the tables aren't too close together... that's something I've been noticing more and more of in NYC restaurants. I left in one of the biggest food comas ever. Good spot. I'm definately going back. more

Bad sushi but good service 9/15/2005

I tried the all-you-can-eat-sushi Thursday. The sushi is big. However, the fish is tasteless. The service is very good though. If you are a sushi lover, I don't recommend you to go. Pros: Good service Cons: Fish is tasteless, Too much rice more

My Favorate Hole-IN-The-Wall 8/5/2004

For $25 a person you get unlimited access to a huge variety of Sushi. The portions are huge and the quite good. It's not the best sushi in the world but definately good. Eel, Salmon, Tamago (the egg stuff) is all pretty good. The food won't make your heart stop but it'll feeling plenty full and satisfed. Regarding some other postings, I never had a problem when I went. Don't be swayed, I woud def. visit at least once. Pros: Great All you can eat, Decent Decor more

Are you kidding me? 3/16/2004

The one time I went here for the all-you-can-eat special, the service was laughable. It took forever to place an order, and then at least 1.5 hours to actually get some food. The best part was that I ordered eel, saw another table actually get some eel, and then asked where my eel was when my food was brought without any eel. The answer, and I'm quoting exactly, ""Eel? No more!"" Hilarious. Whenever I walk by the place, I think, ""Eel? No more!"" And also, I don't go in. more

all-you-can-eat sushi 12/2/2003

i went to all you can eat sushi night, and i will definitely come back. they serve monstrous portions of sushi... big enough to eat in 3 portions. their all you can eat menu was very decent. not just tuna and salmon-- you can also order mackeral, yellowtail, halibut. the waiters seem a bit disoriented however. they kept forgetting about our beverages. Pros: big slabs of sushi, good value Cons: lots of rice more

Excellent Experience 7/18/2003

The best kept secret in NYC. Great food, service, and easy on your wallet. I would recommend this to anyone that likes sushi. My wife actually had me drive two hours the day she gave birth to our daughter to pick up sushi from this venue. If I had to pick one word, I would say ""yummmmy"". Pros: All You Can Eat Night, Huge Portions, Not Well Known Cons: None what so ever more

Solid 2/28/2003

Good quality, outstanding value. It won't give you a life-changing experience, but Funayama is a solid neighborhood contributor. Pros: Value more

All I Can Eat 1/20/2003

I've only gone and will only go for the all you can eat on Monday and Thursday. While they recently raised the price to about $25 per person, if you can eat a decent amount of sushi, it's a great deal. The quality is very good. Not Tomoe good, but still very good. And you can eat as much as you want, picking from about 20 kinds of sushi and 20 or so rolls. The service is fine--the food comes pretty quickly. The ambience is nothing special, but with all that fish you'll be eating, who cares what's hanging on the wall. more

Better sushi at McDonalds 12/30/2002

Yeah, I know, McDonalds doesn't have sushi. But the sushi at this place is terrible. You'd be better off at McDonalds. Dried out fish, so old I could barely chew it. Nasty tasting stuff. more
