Great food, great atmosphere, but a little pricey for me... 6/19/2006

Growing up, whenever we would go to San Antonio to visit my aunt and uncle, we would always eat at Fuddruckers and I loved it! I loved it so much that I was constantly writing letters begging them to open one in El Paso, which was where I lived at the time. I guess at some point, the pleas of an eight year old girl paid off because they now have one there :) I hadn't been to a Fuddruckers in years, but my husband and I decided to go tonight. If you're not familiar with Fuddruckers, the atmosphere is very laid back and low key. The decor is pictures of Elvis and the Beatles among others as well as old license plates and signs from old gas stations. Their specialty is their burgers which is ground daily by on-site butchers. This is a place where you can have your burger your way. You choose the burger, then you choose the "weight" (1/2 pound, 1/4 pound, 2/3 pound, 1 pound, etc.), then you choose how you want it cooked (rare to well done). When all is said and done, you can then add the "toppings" of choice from their condiments bar. Choices include pickles, onions, tomatoes, jalapenos, and salsa among other things. They also have cheese and jalapeno cheese as well as mustard, ketchup, hot mustard, BBQ sauce, and honey mustard. I'm a big fan of the Swiss Melt, which is mushrooms and swiss cheese (you can also have grilled onions, but I don't get those). Their burgers are great, but so are their chicken sandwiches and their salads are HUGE. My two favorite chicken sandwiches are the Bacon Swiss and the Pineapple Twist. I had the Pineapple Twist and I was a little disappointed toinght because it did not have the usual teriyaki glaze. They have a new sandwich that sounds really interesting, but I didn't have the guts to try it tonight. It is called the Chicken Florentine and it has Spinach Artichoke Dip and swiss cheese. If anyone who reads this has tried it, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it! I love the wedge-cut french fries, and they are especially good dipped in the cheese sauce. What I don't like is that you are already paying close to $7 for just the burger and you have to pay almost $2 more if you want fries! This is definitely not a cheap night out! Their kid's meals are your standard fare. You have your choice of items like macaroni and cheese, a grilled cheese sandwich, a hamburger, a hot dog, or chicken strips. They come with fries, a drink, and a kid's cookie. This runs about $4 which is comparable with kid's meals at other places, but the portion sizes ar a lot smaller than what I have seen at other places. Usually we have leftovers to take home from my daughter's kids meal, but that was not the case here. Their desserts are great if you have room. The shakes are yummy and two people can share because they put the excess in a big metal cup and it's like having two shakes! Their fresh baked brownies and fresh baked cookies are a special treat and if you don't have room then, you can buy some to take home and eat later. I think that the food is good and I love the atmosphere, but it's a little pricey for what you get in my opinion. If I'm going to spend $25 on burgers and fries, I'd rather go somewhere else like Chili's and I actually think that Chili's might be a bit cheaper! more
