I've heard through the grapevine that the guys who started Fortune Inn began cooking years ago at Ocean Sky. Lots of Eugeneans love "Sky", but believe me -- Fortune Inn is sure to please with a much higher quality of food preparation, and the cleanliness of Fortune Inn is vastly superior!
Best value is at lunch time. Meals at that time include a choice of hot & sour or egg flower soup, and steamed rice or pan fried chow mein noodles. You will probably have leftovers for another meal, and for less than $8. The dinner menu is essentially the same but slightly higher prices -- but it doesn't necessarily follow that the servings are any larger later in the day.
The menu includes all the standards like lemon chicken, beef with brocolli, shrimp with snow pea, sweet & sour pork, etc. Tomato beef has a distinct ginger flavor. Several terrific vegetarian options also appear -- don't miss out on the eggplant with garlic sauces or the dry cooked green beans with tofu! The Special Fried Rice with chicken, pork and shrimp is also very good. And, if you like those fat slippery rice noodles, definitely go for the Chow Fun. Some family style combo meals are available as dinner selections, but the lunch menu does not offer combo plates. They do offer hamburgers for those who can't take the not-so exotic Chinese fare...but (as my husband says) if you are looking for a burger, what the heck are you doing in a Chinese restaurant?
Large groups are fun here. The crowd will appreciate the Kings Platter appetizer. It includes adequate egg rolls, bbq pork, fried shrimp, and those rice cracker-type things that remind me of styrofome. If you are going with kids try to get seated at a spot with a lazy-susan in the middle of the table. They'll love it!
Fortune Inn does accept reservations, and I advise this strongly for groups of 5 or more. The back of the restaurant can accomodate larger parties, but if you are seated there you may sometimes feel like the service staff has forgotten you are waiting. There sometimes seems to be insuffcient staff to take orders, but they do really hustle to serve you.
Service is usually OK to good -- sometimes you have to work pretty hard to get a smile out of them.
Be aware they don't take checks. And they are closed on Mondays. Take out but no delivery (bummer...)
