I went to Fong Chong for the first time a month ago and thought it was great, so I took my boyfriend back last weekend. The service was completely different and horrible -- They w...

WHY have you gone downhill, Fong Chong 7/28/2006

My family has been going to Fong Chongs, or ""Bobs"" as we called it when we knew the owner, since I was a child. I'm now 21 and haven't eaten there in almost 6 months. SIX MONTHS. There are still some of the original waitresses, and they're great, but the food?? Back when there used to be a shop next to the restaurant the food was always fresh, hot, delicious!! But now?? My usual dim sum, haw gow, is now a 50-50 shot in the dark -- will it be cold and greasy, or hot and scrumptious? Your guess is as good as mine. Even the basic won ton mein has changed from very delicious EVERY TIME to a toss up! Last time I went there the noodles were uncooked and still in the ball they were supposed to be boiled out of!! What! I heard that the managment changed from Bob to his son, and then to the sons uncle; the point is it's not the same. I love'd Bobs as a kid, but since this expansion not only am I down cheap 70 cent Botan Rice Candy, but I'm also hungry. And what's up with them changing portion sizes!? The dim sum used to be 3 giant pieces per plate, now it's 4 puny and sometimes over/under cooked nuggets. I'm sorry Bob, where ever you are, I don't know what happened to Fong Chongs. Pros: sometimes good food Cons: parking, sometimes not good food, sunday wait more

Never Fails 7/11/2006

Sure it's not the prettiest place with the fanciest decorating. Sure it could use some touching-up and the waitresses can't speak English very well, but they do a fine job, (I have been coming here since I moved from Japan 11 years ago and the waitresses that were there then are still there now)! Pros: Great, inexpensive, traditional food Cons: Not the prettiest place more

Good dimsum Cheap reminds me of places in KowLoon 1/13/2006

The dim sum here is great. They even have a lot of options that I never ran across even while living in Hong Kong. Prices are very affordable. Two can eat too much for only $20. The place is basic in decor, like most good dimsum restaurants in Hong Kong, and the dimsum is diverse, hot, and tasty. For dinner, you've gotta' try the Bai Hua DouFu (White Flower Tofu). Pros: Taste, Price more

Going Downhill 12/28/2005

It used to be such a powerhouse but as service has gotten worse and the demand has lessoned, it seems they are just letting everything go. Its a shame really, the food is now bland during Dim Sum and dinner that the Chinese community has easily flocked to other better and less spendier locations. Pros: Value Cons: Parking, Food, Service more

some dim sum are flavorful while others were not. the ""fun gor"" was delicious but the more traditional ""fung jal"" (i love stewed chicken feet) was not good at all. hit and miss at this place. more

Always good, sesame balls 1/27/2005

Love Dim Sum, the sesame balls, the shu mai, the ginger baked chicken, the hum boas, all soo good. Pros: clean, good service Cons: parking more

The worst service in town 11/9/2004

I went there for lunch with a friend and experienced some of the worst service ever. We ended up leaving after about 40 minutes--after receiving only 2 courses of COLD food and then being told that the credit card machine was broken with a paper jam. It was not crowded, so I don't know what the excuse was for such poor service. Both my friend and I felt like we were, in the restaurant's eyes, completely unimportant. I've eaten at Fong Chong's before but I won't be going there again. Cons: , cold food, expensive more

Back in Hong Kong 5/7/2004

Can't get more authentic than this place. The good places in Hong Kong have to have these special ingedients to be good. 1) ducks hanging in the window.2) scary hospital /dressing room lighting and formica tables 3) very surly waiter who yell at each other across the restaurant in catonese. I walk by this restaurant one night and new instantly it was good. Their menu is diverse and thier shrimp is the best in the city. Very large and succulent. A must if you want decent REAL chinese food. Pros: totaly awsome seafood, great BBQ pork, sring rolls very good more

Don't go on a Sunday afternoon! 4/8/2004

I had always heard about the great dim sum at this place, so I dragged my hubby there on a Sunday afternoon. (much to his dismay) I looked like a fool when the same two carts rolled by over and over with the same tired, luke-warm trays of dumplings, sticky rice and chicken feet. I have been here before when it was packed and the varied array of steaming hot dim sum made it a fun (albeit) daring experience to remember. Evidently, a slow Sunday afternoon does not spotlight this restaurant's strengths. I also noted that the prices have increased for several of the items in the past two years. more

Tasty dim sums if you can get them 3/21/2004

Quality is good, but selection is poor. This isnt because they dont make enough varieties. In fact, they have many varieties; they just dont bring them out until they have nearly sold out all the dim sums that are currently in circulation. What this means is they push the same dim sums around and around until people order them because theres nothing else to order. The premise behind dim sum is to eat a wide variety of desserts. A good dim sum place should have lots of varieties in circulation at all times. This is not the case with Fong Chong. I have been there many times on Sundays, and its the same situation each time. Why do I still go? Because their dim sums are tasty if you have the patience to wait for them. Pros: Tasty, not expensive more

Portland has better dim sum 8/21/2003

I have been to many dim sum places in the Portland area and I found this experience to be less than touted. The dim sum was cold and flavorless and I didnt find the menu to be very interesting. If you want some good dim sum then go a few blocks down to Seven Stars and enjoy. I'll leave this place to the more trendy. Pros: great grocery store, nice servers, food presentation Cons: food quality, food flavor, terrible envoronment more

As expected, good dim sum 12/27/2002

Coming from San Francisco I was very pleasantly surprised by the Dim Sum offerings. Price was reasonable, and service was lacking as expected. Also had dinner on a weeknight...stick with the Dim Sum. Pros: Dim Sum more

It's bigger and better now 5/22/2002

Fong Chong has expanded into their grocerie store next door and is double in size. With new management in 2002 the Dim Sum is even BETTER than before and the furniture seems to be newer and cleaner. They are trying to have better service, and hopefully, as they get the kinks worked out, their service will continue to get better. Fong Chong is my favorite downtown Dim Sum resturant. more

Good dim sum 5/16/2002

Fong Chong has pretty decent dim sum, so it's too bad that it's gotten so run-down and dirty. I wouldn't go there for anything but dim sum--their other meals aren't that great. I think Legin is better, all around. Pros: cheap, convenient Cons: run-down more
