Editorial review from Citysearch 8/24/2012

I'm new to living in Austin and I picked Dr. Fogelman randomly after I found a list of psychiatrists with my insurance providers. They were the first to call me back and schedule me with a reasonable appointment, so I went with them not really reading any reviews. more

Don't believe everything you read... 8/16/2011

I'm glad I don't believe every review I read esepcially about a psychiatrist or I would have lost out on an exceptional doctor with a superb bedside manner. I had just the opposite experience with Dr. Fogelman. I had seen another doctor for about 5 yrs in which I loved, but had quite the turnover in front office staff, I couldn't take it anymore, I decided to move on, I was terrified because I loved my doctor, but his staff was below average. I found Dr. Fogelman and my concerns for finding the perfect doctor were gone and his front office person is wonderful. He is a pleasant man, extremely knowledgeable in his field, as far as medications go, the man knows his stuff. I had a great experience and would highly recommend Dr. Fogelman to anyone in Austin. more

Review from a patient trying to get off horrible medications 8/10/2011

I have been seeing Dr. Fogelman for a couple of years now, and after my last visit a few weeks ago I realized just how bad the situation I?m in really is. I started seeing him for pretty much situational depression and anxiety from a bad break up. I was put on four different medications, one of which(Klonopin) I had no idea how stong of a medication it was until I did some research on it. I was taking 3mg and tapered off now to 1mg without sight effect but, now I am starting to experience them-irritability, fuzzy brain, severe insomnia and I'm sure many more to come. I wish someone had told me sooner how awful this medication is to get off of. Dr. Fogleman didn't seem to think I would have any problem getting off of it and suggested a tapering off method that would only take 12 days! What a joke! What I'm still taking right now is equivalent to 20mg of Valium! Just reading different peoples experience of getting off of this horrible drug, I can now look forward to 6 months-2 years to finally get back to normal. Klonopin isn?t supposed to be taken for a long period of time because it is a extremely addictive benzo. After telling Fogleman that I wanted to get off Klonopin he was fine with it and gave me his tapering off plan, and then proceeded to tell me that he thinks I am bipolar and wants to put me on lithium and that he is ?just trying to help me?. I couldn?t believe what I was hearing, so let me get this straight. I want to get off one medication and you want to just add another one to take its place? Taking four different medications for depression and anxiety is NOT NORMAL and horrible for your mind and body. I know this is a lot of information to read but I just want to tell people my whole story. A year after seeing him I also started loosing weight. I got down to 92lbs when my normal weight was 110lbs. I knew it was because of the medication I was on because I had never had issues with my weight before. I told Fogelman how upset I was, and even cried at one point asking for help because loosing that much weight scared me. All I basically got were some questions about me possibly having an eating disorder. Don?t you think if I really had an eating disorder that I wouldn?t be upset about losing so much weight? Ridiculous. So after getting no help or support I decided to take things into my own hands, and decided to get off one of my medications- wellbutrin and guess what happened? Within a week I gained 5lbs! Hmm imagine that, I was losing weight because of a stupid medication he put me on. Researching wellbutrin later I found out that it does usually causes weight loss or a decrease in appetite. I swear I am a better psychiatrist than he is! I think that the people who said that all the bad reviews for him were just because he wasn?t giving people the ?pills? they wanted is totally absurd. I?m giving a bad review because I want to get off the unnecessary medications he put me on, not trying to get on a certain one. Stop assuming things ab more

Terrible reviews are from patients who want drugs! 3/18/2010

I see these varying reviews, and I can tell from his waiting room that patients get mad because they want certain drugs that he won't give them, and then they write bad reviews. The internet is a double edged sword. I've been his patient for seven years and he is terrific! He keeps medications at a minimum, as far as I can tell, at least with me. Great office staff, but the waiting room is small. Pros: Good doctor Cons: small office more

DO NOT believe anything this doctor says! 3/11/2010

If you do not have insurance through a company this doctor accepts, he and his office staff will tell you that he can see you on a ""single case agreement"". He will then tell your insurance company that he will agree to their terms and then bill you whatever he wants. Not only that, he is a serious ""pill-pusher"" and will try to get to to take all sorts of drugs. Cons: No ""true"" insurance coverage more

All Board Allegations Reversed Five Years Ago! 3/2/2010

Dr. Fogelman is my psychiatrist, and has been for 9 years. All of the Medical Board allegations in 2002 have been reversed for over five years He sees my family members too, as he is also a child pschiatrist. He has been very supportive, and has good expertise with mens' issues and medications. He spends as much time with me as I need, as well as with my wife, and he's not reluctant to change my medicines when needed. His staff is really nice, and helpful. I have sent lots of my friends to him and they really like him, too. Pros: Great M.D., Mensa Cons: Small waiting room more

great psychiatrist & nice staff 8/11/2009

I've been a patient since almost 5 years. Me and my two sons see him. Dr. Fogelman is great. He is a psychiatrist since over 30 years and very smart (he is a Mensa member) His office is very small - but they let you know how he is doing on time and you can come a little bit later when he is running behind. The staff told us that it is hard to schedule sometimes, because patients come for a short medicine check and sometimes that turns out to be longer - you never know if there is an emergency. The staff, Ruth and Tiffany, are very warm and friendly. One time we had to wait 30 minutes and they shared all their cookies with us and we even had a fun time. Ruth is Dr. Fogelman's wife and Tiffany is from Sweden. He probably would be lost without them :) But he is very sensitive and listens very good. My one son (Ethan, 19) had a rough time - but he helped us through it! He and his staff are fantastic! Pros: very friendly Cons: small waiting room more

Great Foster Child Psychiatrist 8/1/2009

I am a foster parent, and Dr. F sees some of my foster children. He often is behind, but he is sweet with my kids, and usually can make them laugh. I also like that he tries to keep medicines to a mininum. Pros: compassionate with kids Cons: long wait to be seen more

Great staff, wek-versed and caring doc 7/1/2009

As I see the horrible reviews last fall for my doc, I can only assume these people were mad because they wanted something (Xanax, Adderall, ???) that he was not willing to give them, because he has been my doc, and my two children's doc for about four or five years. People say I am very attractive, and the good doc has never made a suggestive statement to me, or tried to hug me. We have great sessions--I see him for meds and psychotherapy as well. There are only about three great psychiatrists in town, and he is one of them!!! Pros: Interactive and caring Cons: you may have a long wait in his office more

I am medicade and i like dr. fogleman 6/26/2009

I saw the stuff from one patient about Dr. Fogleman's slurring medicade patients. I and my children are on medicade, and hes' been nice to us and listens good. Pros: listens good Cons: office is crowded more

Love This Doc 6/10/2009

I had seen three other pschiatrists before this doctor and I just didn't feel very well with what they were doing. When I saw Dr. F. for the first time a few weeks ago and he thought I should change medicines. I did, and within about 3 or 4 days I felt better than I ever had, and I have been seeing shrinks for over 15 years! He also has lots of warmth and his staff is super. Pros: Super with warmth and medications Cons: Poor Parking in the complex more

Mensa Doctor! 6/2/2009

I am a patient of Dr. F's for almost a decade, and he has seen my children from my first marriage and my beautiful fiancee as well. I am on three separate medications from him, and my two children are on a total of four medications as well. He has warned me that none of the meds my kids are on are actually approved for children. My fiancee loves his ability to hear her symptoms and discern a diagnosis. His staff is also so warm and compassionate. Pros: Great Diagnostician, Great with medications, Great Staff Cons: small waiting room more

Best Psychiatrist I've Seen 5/23/2009

My husband, myself, and my adolescent daughter have seen Dr. Fogelman for about three years. We are each on medications prescribed by him, and I am in psychotherapy with him as well. He has been a great ""family doctor"" for us, and we are all tons better and functioning at higher levels because of his care. There are times, however, that he can be over an hour behind, so the staff has taught us to call before our appointments to see where he stands. Pros: Warm and knowledgable Cons: May have long wait for visits more

Absolutely the best!! 5/6/2009

Dr. Fogelman is awesome. His diagnostic skills are superb. He is genuine, calm, considerate and makes me feel at ease and comfortable during our visits. I would be lost without Dr. Fogelman. more

Wonderful MD 4/3/2009

I am shocked at reading some of the reviews. I have know this MD for over 15 years. In my professional carrier, working in Mental Health, and now as patient. He has been my physician for over 5 years. I would recommend him to anyone. I believe most people get frustrated with him because he has a very complicated patient base. Sometimes his appointment take much longer than anticipated. I have actually watched parents scream at the office staff because the doctor is running late. He was running late because he working on getting a seriously ill child into the hospital. Dr. F is a kind soul that will work with you. He has never made any rude, inappropriate or off hand comments in front of me. This includes both professional and personal events. Do not believe what has been written. Finding the right psychiatrist is like finding the right pair of shoes. You have to keep trying until you find the right fit. Pros: Lovely and professional doctor Cons: parking more

Don't Believe The Horrible Reviews! 2/18/2009

I see the terrible reviews for Dr. Jay, and these must be coming from patients who wanted dru...s (CitySearch won't let me say the actual word), and he retused to give them to dru.. abusers! My family, including our two kids, have seen him for almost seven years, and none of those scurrilous reviews sound anything like our experience with him. He's done a great job with helping us all. The only negative is that he does run late on occasion because his practice is so busy, but it is their office policy for you to call ahead, and reschedule if he's running late. Pros: Great doc Cons: Long waiting times more

DO NOT GO HERE 10/22/2008

My daughter has been seeing him for 3 years becuase the insurance forced us. Every time we go in he has no idea who she is or why she is there. He tries to change her meds even when she is doing fine and needs no change. He is mean and ugly to everyone even his office manager. She finally had enough and left him. I had to argue with him NOT to change my daughters meds and then he still wrote her a script for the new AND the old. He doesn't even know he did it. He is a flake. Do not take you child to him. I have asked around with her therapist and he does not have a good reputation around town even with peers. Cons: rude, mean, usual wait is 1-2 hours, wrong meds, unconcerned about patient more

I do not recommend him to anyone ever!! 9/26/2008

This is a doctor who should have never been given a license to practice. He is racial against anyone who does not pay cash or have private insurance, especially medicaid patients, he thinks all medicaid patients are scuzzy people and I have witnessed him saying this. He charges way too much for a visit with a quack. He is very demeaning to his employees in front of other people as well as his wife. He changes a childs medications every month just because, even if the patient is doing great. He takes more pills than the patients, he pulls them out of his pocket every time I am in there, and he takes personal calls about some house he bought during my time. He has been complained about more than a handfull of times and I am surprised he still has a license to practice medicine. He charges way too much for a missed appointment, $250, but when he decides he is going to stay home just because, we as patients are lucky to get a call to reschedule. He has no respect for anyone, not even himself, he burps in front of patients and tries to hug all female patients even when they don't want to hug him. He ask the most inappropriate questions ever like about personal bedroom information, thats none of his business. I do not recommend him to anyone, especially for children, he is the worst doctor ever if you are referred to him run, do not take your kids to him unless you want him to mess them up even more. He lost the only thing that was keeping me going there and that was his last assistant, he ran her off too and I am sure this new one will not last long either because he doesn't know how to act in front of people and how to treat them. One day the Texas Medical Board will see that he is not worth having a license. Pros: none he is a quack Cons: run everything about him is bad more

Avoid this doctor 9/21/2008

I have used Dr. Fogelman for 3 different foster children and will not go back. He asks inappropriate questions in front of the children about their removal from their biological families. He takes personal phone calls in the middle of his sessions. Most importantly, however, he does not listen to anything I say or my children say about how they are doing. We have told them that things are going well, yet he continues to change medications to his preferred brand. He is not willing to work with his patients to see if they can be off of meds. In general, he does not appear to be interested in treating foster children. Pros: He's the only psychiatrist who takes Star Health for foster kids and has appts available Cons: There are many reasons that he is the only one w/ appts available. more

A phenomenal psychiatrist. 5/1/2008

Having been a patient of Dr. Fogelman for four years, I'm appalled by some of these comments. Pros: Everything. Cons: He can often run behind by quite a while. more
