I absolutely love the food at Flying Burrito. Their margaritas are excellent! Unfortunately majority of the time I take someone to this restaurant I receive horribly slow incons...

Still a Special Place 3/5/2009

Under new ownership and maintaining the restaurant's long history as a special pace for special people. More than half the menu is the same as that of the original owner, who was retained for months to work with cook staff to make sure the flavors were right. Prices remain very reasonable, and every weekend fresh fish specials remind long-time patrons why they continue to come. The legendary margarita machine (in a new incarnation) still is present, to make sure that every drink has precisely the right proportions. But what continues to make this the funkiest place in town is the varied and loyal clientele--mature, interesting people from all walks and occupations. Finally, three high-def screens make this a place to watch all Carolina games. If you have not been back this year, put it on your list. more

Top neighborhood bar in Chapel Hill 3/5/2009

My wife and I have been going to the Flying Burrito for 11 years. When it closed we were heartbroken but now think it better than ever since reopening. While retaining much of the spirit of the old Burrito in the name, margarita machine, signature dishes and decor, it is much improved in many other ways. The food is as good as ever with greater variety including a range of hamburgers, tapas and daily seafood specials. Pricing is great especially in these challenging times. Three high def TVs make it a great place for watching sports. Walking into the bar is like walking into Cheers with friendly wait staff and a steady crowd of regulars who form an extended Burrito family. Familiies love the informal nature of the dining room and you can see kids of all ages almost any night. The new owner has made a great effort to meet customers and understand their needs. He has been willing to try new things (extended hours, music, special events, menu changes) to open the Burrito to a new and wider breed of customers. Summer at the Burrito will be even better with the newly upgraded veranda. Pros: Family friendly, great bar, very good food offering great value more

unbelievable specials 3/4/2009

I must not be eating at the same restaurant as the people giving these bad reviews. Every time I go in the Flying Burrito the staff is very friendly and accommodating. I went there on a wednesday night and the wine was half off and basically the whole menu was five dollars. The size of the plate I received for five dollars was UNBELIEVABLE. I had salmon and spinach enchiladas and if i recall there were chicken enchiladas on special that night. The hardest part was trying to decide what to eat. Me and my girlfriend both ate generously and had several drinks and our tab was less than 20 bucks. In this day and age its hard to find a place like that. whatever they are doing I hope they keep it up. I wouldn't change a thing about the place. I can't wait until summer gets here so we can eat on the patio. Pros: service, food, drinks. prices more

no soul 3/3/2009

I have given the new burrito a few chances. While they have some nice bartenders. The wait staff is terrible and the owner does not have the charm or soul of Phil. It is sad to see the Burrito turn into something you could find at any strip mall in america(just what we need another chain). Getting rid of the fish specials and ENCHILADAS. What is this guy thinking. Then not paying Phil for his recipes and telling the staff phil is not welcome back into the institution he started. I think his karma will come back to bite him. Do us all a favor change the name so you won't tarnish the legacy that was one of the great chapel hill meeting places. They did do one good thing cleaning the bathroom. Sad when that is the only thing you can improve upon. Pros: clean bathrooms, name Cons: food, owner, music selection, no fish or enchiladas more

'Reincarnated' Flying Burrito Is Wonderful! 2/18/2009

I'm absolutely confused and disappointed by recent, poor reviews. I can't get enough of the flat-out wonderful food, service, and service at the revamped Flying Burrito. All of the dishes I've had during my many repeat visits over the past couple of months - from the legendary Flying Mayan to the best area hamburgers, in my opinion - have been amazingly prepared and delicious. I remember the old FB, but I'm hoping this new, wonderful incarnation will not be counted out - it is truly wonderful, and welcome addition to the Chapel Hill area restaurant scene. more

Agree with other recent reviews 2/4/2009

Something has happened to this place. I used to come all the time! I took my Aunt here for what I thought was going to be a great experience with great food as I remembered it to be and I was terribly disapointed. Hopefully the reviews will get the staff to re-look at what has been happening and bring back satisfaction and good food! Sad. This used to be one of my most favorite places. more

Bring back the Old Flying Burrito 12/23/2008

Bring back the old Flying Burrito. The fresh seafood specials were always unique and delicious with the Mexican flare. Yes it was dark and maybe too 'funky' for some but the food was fantastic. Pros: Regular Mexican Food Cons: Nothing original more

BAD FOOD...TERRIBLE SERVICE... 11/30/2008

I am astonished at the bad food and terrible service I received at Flying Burrito tonight. My friend and I had heard nothing but good things about the restaurant so we decided to give it a try...we honestly regret the decision. We each ordered a burrito and I can honestly say that it was the farthest thing from a burrito that I had ever eaten (I am a huge fan of burritos, Qdoba, Moe's, etc.). My chicken burrito was so dry and tasteless. My friend had a beef burrito that I am 100% positive was pot-roast wrapped in a tortilla with a dollop of sour cream. We ordered chips and queso and when we asked for more chips we were told that they would be extra, even though we had not finished the queso. Our server switched our drinks after refilling them and took forever to actually refill the drinks before returning them to the wrong person. After suffering through the meal my friend and I requested that the bill be split down the middle and when the server brought the checks she had 1) not split them evenly and 2) ran my friend's card twice. It was too much of a hassle to try to get it straightened out so now I owe my friend. I don't think this review does justice to just how TERRIBLE our experience was at Flying Burrito from start to finish. I highly encourage everyone to go elsewhere. Pros: Seated quickly Cons: Food, service more

more than just burrito's 9/6/2008

I ordered nacho's and a tapas plate with scallops and blackbeans. Either one would have been plenty of food by itself. The nacho's were on the better side of average. The scallops were big, tender and not overcooked, which doesn't sound like the highest compliment, but most times I order scallops they are tough and overdone. Pros: good value, lots of choices more

great burrito 7/12/2008

the place has been a long time dwelling for chapel hills students, locals etc.....however lost its way and has now returned as the simple good food it should be.\r Had the catfish burrito it was very good, fish was crispy and not overcooked like times before.\r The remodel was a very big success and cant wait to go back Pros: great food Cons: ???? more

Disregard reviews prior to June, '08. It's all new. 6/27/2008

Though I eat out often and live very near Flying Burrito, I used to avoid it because it was truly dirty. Now there's new ownership, a new menu, new decor, and new CLEANLINESS. For lunch today I had a positively delicious wild mushroom burrito ($6.00). My companion had the vegetarian burrito, which was fresh and tasty. Our friendly server knew the menu, and helped us with these excellent selections. I'm thrilled that my rather sleazy old neighbor has been revitalized. Pros: Excellent new ownership. Cons: None. more

bad service horrible food and just plain dirty 9/13/2007

I went to flying burrito for dinner on Saturday night with friends after being told it was great. who ever has said that it is great must be blind and live in a pigs pen. The food was cold and not very good and seemed like it just wasn'tthat fresh ,the server was a little too friendly and made us uncomfortable. The place seems like it had a huge frat party the night before. After eating there a friend told me that I was luckly I didn't get sick because early this week they were given a C rating by the health dept. I think I would rather drink the water in Mexico than at Flying Burrito. So before you go think twice about and go to one of Chapel Hills better Mexican restaurants. Cons: dirty more

Great food, check the hours 8/10/2007

Despite what's listed here, Flying Burrito is NOT open for lunch, and is NOT open on Tuesdays (yes, I sent Citysearch a correction, they haven't updated the info yet). Yeah, this may change when the students get back in town...but if you want to visit this Chapel Hill institution, it may be worth a call first... Pros: A Chapel Hill institution. The best burritos around. Cons: Hours aren't what you expect more

i  flying burrito 12/22/2006

I absolutely love this restaurant. We have been going since I was a little girl and tomorrow I am going there to celebrate my 26th birthday. I love the ambience (casual) and the spicy, flavorful food. I dont think I've been to any Mexican restaurants in the triangle area that I like as much as this one as far as food plus atmosphere. I enjoy the decor. I've tried several different burritos and the fish tacos they are all packed with flavor. The spicy fries are really good too, and the waitstaff certainly isnt stingy with bringing out baskets of chips (the blue corn chips with lots of spices on them are my favorite). I've never felt rushed eating at this restaurant. more

great fish fajitas, fun atmosphere, beautiful patio 11/26/2006

We make the Flying Burrito a regular twice-a-month out-to-eat experience. I love the amazing triggerfish fajitas (a frequent special). Also, they make some killer oyster tacos. Everything I have had here is wonderfully seasoned and well-prepared. My only objection is that they tend to bring all of the dishes in too quick succession, even when we ask them to wait. We just start on the margaritas and chips when here comes the salad. We are in the middle of our fabulous salad, when all of a sudden, the main dish arrives. Little to gripe about, though, when the food is so great -- that's why they get a nine instead of a ten. Pros: food Cons: food comes too quickly -- not allowed to finish one thing before another comes more

Don't listen to bad reviews! 9/30/2005

Please don't take anything that ""Nobody"" said seriously about the Flying Burrito! First off, all the things that they mentioned that they were charged for ARE in print on the menu!!!!! If you want free food, then do not go OUT to eat! I happen to know for a fact that the chips are homemade in house fresh every day and all of their salsas are also homemade! Most other Mexican places in CH order their chips and salsa from a food distributor and this is why they are complimentary with the meal (they are also not very good!) Secondly, the staff is extemely friendly while also being helpful! They will always tell you what they personally like and make suggestions! Great restaurant, although sometimes very busy on Friday nights!! Expect to wait - but just chill with a few Grande Margaritas and you'll be fine! Pros: Margarita Mondays, Free parking, Excellent specials more

Flying Burrito memories... 5/27/2004

The Flying Burrito has the best mexican seafood, soups and chili I've ever had. The patio is great, and the margaritas are wonderful (I hate sweet margaritas). I love the smothered Flying Mayan burrito. Smothering does cost extra, but it is written on the menu. Chips don't come with the meal because when you go to a restaurant you're usually expected to pay for food. If you don't want to pay 1.50, then you will have plenty of room for all the wonderful options on the menu. I used to be a regular there but live in Austin, Texas now and have yet to find a restaurant that compares to the Flying Burrito. In fact, when I visit the east this summer, I will drive 9 hours out of the way just to go there. I can't wait. The Flying Burrito is what I miss the most in Chapel Hill. Pros: Festive atmosphere, Seafood, soups, guac, Patio, margaritas Cons: , none in austin more

Hot Stuff! 3/28/2004

My husband and I eat at The Flying Burrito about once a week and love it! They have amazing specials, especially the seafood. Their chips have the yummiest seasoning on them and their salsas are great. Be careful of the hot salsa and anything with Ultimate in the name--dangerous! Their wait staff is also very friendly and efficient. We found that on weekends it gets extremely crowded and there is often a wait, so now we try to go during the week. Their margaritas are also fabulous! Pros: Fun Atmosphere, Cool Wait Staff, Delicious more

Great Restaurant 9/26/2003

I love this restaurant. We drive often from Raleigh to go here. Great margaritas. Very casual laid back ambiance. Highly recommended. more

deserves your business 9/18/2002

good mexican food! and as spicy as you can handle it. ask for the hot salsa, wow! i think that this mexican restaurant deserves to be rated higher than 10th place, probably about 4th or 5th. the food is flavorful and tastes fresh. it's more tex-mex than mexican, but that is a lost point in this part of the country. the wait staff is courteous and prompt (this is important if you need drink refills with spicey food). i've been here only 3 times, but i have only lived in the area a short 2 months. i will go back and often. Pros: fresh taste, adequate parking, damn good value Cons: it's in chapel hell more
