I've been taking violin at Florentine for 2 and a half years, and my teachers so far have been really great. My violin teacher actually went to Princeton and my friend who takes cello has a teacher who went to Julliard and Yale. Crazy! They're a little bit more expensive than other Chinatown schools, but less than the rest of the real world. But the teachers are really good. Oh yea, my little 9 year old cousin went on a field trip to Carnegie Hall last night with her Florentine teachers and said she wanted to write a review (which made me want to write a review.) here she is: 6 stars. We saw two famous violinists and a big orchestra. Carnegie Hall was grand and beautiful. My teachers are smart and very nice. more

Subpar teachers, subpar facilities 8/19/2005

Although this school has been around for about 20 years don't take it that they're good at what they do instead you need to understand the needs of the community. Chinese parents are very involved in their childrens education and often enroll their children in tutoring classes, after school programs, music lessons, etc. Florentine was establish to satisfiy that need. Having been a piano student for over 6 years (forcible) I never learned how to actually play the piano. The teachers are usually high school/ college grads who need extra cash and rather gossip rather than teach. The rooms that they teach in are tiny and only able to fit 2 people and a keyboard. Spend the extra money and enroll your child in a better school. more

Waste of Money 8/19/2005

I was a student at Florentine a few years ago and felt it a complete waste of money. And alot of money it was. The classes here are not cheap. The tutors that I got didn't really teach me anything useful. For example for the math clean he would go over a few questions of math but provide no real understand of the concepts. And the math that he was doing was totally unrelated to the course I was doing. The course I took was a SAT review course and I learned nothing off of it. I would recommend people to spend there money elsewhere. After this course I went to Princeton Review and I have to say they actually teach and provide really helpful technique for the SAT. more

Academic Tutoring, Music Lessons 8/18/2005

Florentine is a tutoring institution for all students. They focus mainly on summer classes to provide preparation for fall. They also specialize in specialized high school tutoring and psats. In addition to academic classes, they have classes in art and music. The great thing about Florentine is that they test their students before they are enrolled, to see which classes suit them, whether they are more advanced or at the normal pace. This way, students are placed in the appropriate level classes. This personalized attention is great but it comes with a price. Approximately 1 1/2 months in the summer runs around 1000 dollars. more
