Best groceries in New York City 7/27/2006

Fairway should be a landmark - this place has the best fresh produe around, and prices that won't raise an eyebrow like most NYC markets do. If you can get to the store on 125th street - it's huge and you'll have a fun experience going into the freezer section (DO TAKE ONE OF THE JACKETS HANGING OUTSIDE THE DOOR - IT REALLY IS COLD IN THERE!) and buying large quantities of meat at tiny prices. There is a butcher and a whole fish counter, too. Fresh eggs, and dairy, everything you need. If you don't have a car or easy way out there, try the one on Broadway between 73rd and 74th - you might need to take a cab home, but you'll still save a lot over normal supermarket costs. more

Fairway rules! 3/21/2006

If you live in Manhattan chances are that you know of Fairways. If you live on the Upper West Side then odds are that you have shopped in Fairways. Fairways has everything that you would want in a specialty food market. From fresh fish to dried dates from Turkey they have it all. If you are ever in Manhattan you just have to take a trip there and check it out. more

The most fun you can have grocery shopping 3/20/2006

I really miss Fairway. We used to do a lot of our grocery shopping there when we lived in Manhattan. My favorite is their olive bar - especially the baby mushrooms. Of course during "peak hours" the store is nearly impossible to navigate, but Manhattanites are quite used to that. The fish and meats are always super fresh, and the produce section is great. They also have a great selection of specialty foods and a health and bulk section upstairs. This place is truly an upper west side institution. Check out the photos on the wall as you go though the checkout. Just don't expect a lot of sales here! more

Fresh Produce and Large Selection - Shop here! 11/10/2005

Fairway has an impressive cheese section that is cheap in NYC. Large selection of imported cheese and the prices are amazing. The also have a large olive section that offers many varieties and looks like it has be handled cleanly. The Organic section has a large selection compared to most supermarkets. Here you can find Braggs products and they have a fully stocked organic dairy section. I was pleasantly surprised to find all the flax oil products that I usually have to get at my health food store. The produce looks fresh and is moderately priced. I would not say it was the cheapest in manhattan....actually the cheapest produce is in Chinatown. If you are going to plan a dinner then fairway is a one stop shopping mecca for all your ingredients. more

my experience with this place is somewhat limited, but highly important. the day after our wedding, we planned a picnic in central park, and ordered a sandwich catering plate from this grocery store (mainly based on price and selection). let me tell you, these were the best damn sandwiches that anyone had ever eaten. i mean, really unbelievable - top notch ingredients, perfect combinations of flavors, and enough variety in the selection to please almost the entire wedding guest list. plus, the people working there were super helpful and friendly, making planning the picnic a complete non-stresser. more

Fairway has become associated with New York shopping with great prices and excellent selection. They have a large selection of almost anything you can imagine and they also have lots of kosher food too. Shopping at Fairway is always a fun experience. I would go all the way to the west side to show there! more

If we could all be so lucky 10/4/2005

If for whatever reason you have a friend who has a car and one afternoon says, "would you like to go to Fairway?" Don't even answer, just get in the car. As one who does not live on the upper West side, Fairway is a rare treat, but what a treat it is. Deal with the crowds, yes, but this place is true shopping experience (don't forget to pick up some beer) that ruins grocery shopping anywhere else and reminds jaded New Yorkers just what we forget about the outside world. more

A Manhattan Institution 9/18/2005

Being a Manhattan Institution is good and bad as Fairway illustrates. Fairway provides a decent selection of many foods and an excellent selection of kosher items. Price, by Manhattan standards, are excellent. However, this causes a visit to the market to be a royal pain - crowded everywhere, in the parking lot, to move a cart - heaven help you if you would like to look at the nutrition information. If you have a car, go to NJ and visit Wegman's as it kills this place but for those who do not have the time or the car, this is the best you will probably do. more

The best market in NYC!! 8/29/2005

Fairway is by far the best market/grocery store in New York City. The selection is huge, the parking easy, the food fresh and the service good. The prices are extremely reasonable as well. Typical staples (canned food, paper products) can often be found cheaper elsewhere -- but the fresh fruits and veggies can't be beat in either their quality or price. Definately worth the trip!! more

A New York Staple! 8/21/2005

Once you have shopped at Fairway, you have become a New Yorker! This place is huge for NYC, with two floors, and two different markets in one. You are welcomed to Fairway by gads of fresh produce, priced to sell. Continuing through the downstairs you will find it is packed full of specialty items like olives, cheese, baked goods and deli items, while upstairs you will find a section devoted soley to organic produce. This place is definately worth the trek, especially if you are throwing a party! more

Fairway, by far, is the best market in Manhattan. Fairway has the best and most modestly priced vegetables in the city and great and extensive varity of cheeses. The fish counter is excellent and, again, very modestly priced. Huge selection of olive oils is also available on the second floor. The second floor also features hard to find health foods and organic fruits and vegetables. Fairway also carries the gourmet items you might find at Dean & Deluca. more

Not exactly an undiscovered gem--but Fairway is probably still the best all around food store/gourmet market in NY. The produce is hit and miss, but for many bulk items this is the best bet. Serious competition from Fresh Direct and Whole Foods may improve the general standard here--but there still the one to beat. more

Excellent store but a bit expensive 8/19/2005

The only thing bad about Fairway is that the price of everything if a bit higher here, so you'd want to purchase your everyday branded items such as cereals, detergent, etc at another store. But for the rest it's hard to beat Fairway, their quality is fantastic. Their produce selection is great all year round. more

more selections than you can imagine 8/17/2005

Fairway definitely lives up to its slogan of “Like No Other Markets.” It sells fresh meat and vegetables, tons of prepared food, and many non-generic brands of food items at great prices. It probably has more types of virgin olive oil compared to the number of soft drink brands at Gristedes. My only complaint is that the line for ordering meat is always long. more

Riverside/Harlem Fairway 8/17/2005

In my 2 short years living on the Upper West Side I've found the Fairway Market on the west side of Harlem to be the best place to shop for fresh ingredients at the best prices. Fresh Basil is never more than $2 and you'll get a big package of it. The cheese and olive section is the best I've ever seen. For the refrigerated section, if you forget to bring a jacket, don't worry they'll let you borrow one. Try to avoid going on a Sunday. As all markets are, it's super crowded! more

Freshest Veggies, Cheese, Etc. 8/17/2005

What can be said about Fairway? The perfect NYC supermarket! Fairway is the best for fresh fruit, veggies, meats, cheeses, dairy and the list goes on and on. You could go in there, buy food for a week and spend less than you would at any of the chain markets in the city. Granted it's always crowded, but they do deliver and never run out of anything. Try their homemade pasta and sauces and nutty granola. more

Located on the Upper West Side, this very popular grocery store has everything one needs. The upper level has the organic market and the cafe, the lower level has regular groceries. Starting on the outside with fresh flowers and fruits, you'll find a wide variety of fresh and good quality produce inside as well. Fresh breads, wide array of cheeses, olive oils, aged vinegars, desserts, daily prepared meals, and more! They even sell imported chocolates such as Cadbury's Aero bars. more

Great market 8/15/2005

Fairway is a wonderful place to get meats and fish on the upper west side. The selection is always fresh and the veggies just can't be beat. General grocery items are limited in scope and fairly pricey but otherwise this market is the one to beat. It never takes more than a few minutes to check out because they have so many stations (if they are a bit surly) and they really know how to direct the traffic to get you through in minutes. more

Shopping Heaven 8/15/2005

This is the persfect place in NYC to shop. Prices are reasonable and selection if very good. Their kosher food selection is awesome. The kosher buyer is very helpful as well. He can tell you what is new on the market. Also, for meat, you can call ahead and tell them what kosher meat you want. They will set it aside and you just pick it up from the counter in the evening. In addition, they have a very nice selection of fresh fish including daily specials. more

Fresh foods 8/3/2005

This market has fresh foods and more selection of organic and healthy foods than most. The prices are comparable to other grocery stores in Manhattan, but the meats are fresher and the store visibly cleaner. Watch out - the aisles are small and usually packed with people with carts and such and bring a jacket along to go into the cold room. If you don't you can borrow one of theirs. more
