So I bought a last minute Groupon for a 45-minute massage here. I really needed one, my back and shoulders were killing me. I had never been to this place, and I was worried that ...

Best Deep Tissue Massage 5/17/2007

I?m a tiny person, but like a very deep work. This is not an easy task for my massage therapist. At Essential Therapy I had a wonderful experience, my masseuse was skilled and attentive. Overall the place is beautiful, the staff was gracious and welcoming. I will definitely go back. Pros: therapists, location Cons: none more

Lame Spa Experience 5/17/2007

This place is a fake spa. The front desk employees were rude and lazy. The hot tub they speak about is in a basement and is less elegant then a motel above ground pool. My massage was ok-- the male therapist was very young and seemed almost afraid to touch me and to move the sheet around. All in all its a pretty economical deal if you really want a massage-- but the experiece is pretty gross and does not at all feel luxurious. Pros: inexpensive Cons: gross changing rooms and hot tub -- basement location more

Great experience 5/16/2007

I was looking for a spa to surprise my girlfriend for our anniversary and was recommended Essential Therapy by one of my friend who is a regular at Essential therapy. We had a 90 minute couples massage and absolutely loved it. The staff was very friendly, facilities clean and my massage was excellent. I highly recommend this spa and can't wait to go back! Pros: dry sauna, atmosphere, massage Cons: N/A more

Inconsiderate staff and the therapist did NOT show up! 5/11/2007

I have been coming to Essential Therapy for years and my experience in the past have always been great. Last week, I had a massage and the therapist was at least 15 minutes late but I didnt think it was a big deal since it was the 1st time that's happened. However, today, I was booked to have a facial and the therapist (Jiya) NEVER showed up. I went to the front desk and ALL they can offer me was a re-schedule or a massage by a male therapist. I opted to re-schedule and went back inside, took a shower and left the keys at the front desk. On the way out, the front desk lady asked me for my name and although I explained to her the whole story about my therapist not showing up, she continued to interrogate me, as if I did not pay for the service (that I did NOT get)!! I was so upset that I just left. The front desk staff have ALWAYS been rude but it was ridiculous today. They have absolute disregard of the fact that the therapist did not show up, never bothered to call and inform me, I made the trip in vain, and the best they can do is RESCHEDULE!! I guess their 24-hour cancellation policy only applies to patrons but not the other way around. I DO NOT RECOMMEND ESSENTIAL THERAPY! Pros: jacuzzi Cons: Not punctual (if they even show up) and rude front desk staff more

Mediocre At Best 5/5/2007

I was so excited about coming here after reading all the great reviews on citysearch but I was disappointed by both the space and the massage therapist. The ambiance is a bit dank for my taste and in addition to that once you walk in there was no greeting to offer water or anything else. My massage then began about 15 minutes late which wasnt a big deal, but the therapist didnt even apologize or anything. Then the massage began with the therapist asking what my problem areas were to which she didnt seem to pay particular attention to it later on during the massage. The therapist didnt give me a deep tissue as i had requested. I also received a weird face massage which felt uncomfortable. Then when changing in the women's locker room, people (Essential Therapy staff) kept leaving the door wide open while men walked through the hallway with an open view. I thought this was VERY rude. Finally when I went to pay the front receptionisht paid me no attention and instead talked on the phone. Overall, I didnt feel a sense of a nice luxury spa, instead of it was just ok, and the rude staff made it worse. Will not be going back. more

Wonderful sports massage after running a marathon! 5/3/2007

I just ran my first marathon and was looking for a spa for a sports massage the next day knowing I'd be sore. I choose Essential Therapy because the owner has a background in sports therapy. It was a WONDERFUL experience. I hobbled in almost 2 hours early so I could take advantage of the jacuzzi and sauna before my sports massage. The atmosphere was relaxing and comfortable. Then I had a 90 minute massage with Nick. When I told him about the marathon, he took special care of my legs and back which were most sore. He made sure the level of pressure was appropriate. Best of all, he stretched my muscles and after the massage gave me tips to help me over the next few days. When I left I was walking like my old self and felt fantastic. I've told my other running buddies about this place and I plan to go back. Pros: Fantastic massage, nice atmosphere Cons: Steam room wasn't working more

Skilled practitioners and gorgeous setting 5/2/2007

This place consistently has the best massage therapists I've found in NYC. Many places have a good masseuse or two on staff with the rest just OK. I've tried over a dozen of the therapists here and they've all been well above average. It's beautiful, clean and well designed place with men's and women's locker rooms and steam rooms, sauna and showers. Simple things like razors and mouthwash make all the difference. I like deep tissue massage and because they have the same flat rate for all types of massages, it?s a much better value than places that charge more for "advanced" massages. Highly recommend. Pros: Great music, lots of amenities, reasonable price. more

Really Improves Skin 5/2/2007

I have had many facials in my life, but my experience at Essential Therapy last week was probably the best I?ve ever had. It was so relaxing and rejuvenating, products they use smell delicious and I like the fact that it?s organic. I?m very happy with the results and definitely coming back. I would recommend Essential Therapy for facials. Pros: great service, wonderful atmosphere and beautiful ambience more

floating on air 4/6/2007

the early bird special is the best gift you can give to yourself. the space was quiet and unpopulated-- as the client you feel as if you are the center of the universe- the focus is on you. the floor is cushioned, each step is a delicate movement to pamper the whole body. the steam rooms give the effect of the perfect everlasting hot shower, without the effort of taking a shower. the massage released all negativity, i felt completely comfortable with the professional, most importantly i was restored to an amazing peace between mind and body by the end of my hour massage. i will go back because i dont want to live without this! more

Very good 3/28/2007

I had a Shiatsu session and it was excellent. It's not so easy to find good therapist and believe me not so many people in New York know what it's true Shiatsu. I heard great reviews from some of my friends that have been to Essential Therapy so I decided to give them a try. I was pleasantly surprise and will definitely come back. Pros: Sauna and steam room Cons: can't think of any more
